TVB general manager Eric Tsang has refuted rumours of his involvement in a scam syndicate in Myanmar.

Talks of Tsang, 70, investing in a scam group went rampant on social media after multiple reports on Sept 1 claimed that the Hong Kong actor was arrested by authorities as part of an investigation into the matter.

Speaking to Hong Kong's Oriental Daily on Sunday (Sept 3), Tsang firmly denied the rumours and said that he only became aware of the accusations after multiple friends informed him of the news on social media.

"I told them it's not me. I hate defrauding elderly people of their money, and (people are saying) I did it? I was in Taiwan at the time," he told the publication.

During the interview, Tsang expressed dissatisfaction over how much fake news is being spread daily and urged everyone to stop creating rumours as it may bring dire consequences to innocent people.

"All these fake stories don't have much impact on senior artistes like me, but it can be tough for younger artistes who may lose their jobs because of it.

"Fake news has harmed so many people and not just in the entertainment scene. It's easy to write a few words and (manipulate) photos, but it can affect someone's entire life.

"I hope that people won't blindly believe the news they read, and those who create rumours should question their conscience and think twice about why they feel the need to do such a thing," Tsang said.

The Infernal Affairs star added that he will be taking legal action against the person who started the rumour of his involvement in the scam syndicate.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong law enforcement agencies have also shut down claims of Tsang running a scam group, calling it "baseless".

The actor recently returned from Taiwan after undergoing a surgery to remove an aneurysm.
