The Walking Dead Spinoff Dead City (2023): Cast, Trailer, More - Parade Skip to main content

The Walking Dead is spinoff city, and they're taking at least one spinoff into the city that never sleeps. Dead City will follow two TWD fan-favorites, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and Lauren Cohan as Maggie, all the way to New York City. Get all the details we know so far about the next Walking Dead spinoff Dead City, including the cast and how and when to watch!

What is the new Walking Dead spinoff, Dead City?

Originally titled Isle of the Dead, Dead City was announced on March 7, 2022. It's the latest in a series of TWD spinoffs. Fear the Walking Dead, a prequel series detailing the early days of the zombie apocalypse, premiered in 2015 and will soon be on its eighth season.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond premiered in 2020 and ended after two seasons.

There are also two more upcoming spinoffs in the pipeline: Tales of the Walking Dead dropped in August 2022, while The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (obviously starring Norman Reedus) is still to come. Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) was previously slated to be in the Daryl-focused spinoff, but ultimately withdrew from the series due to its filming in Europe.

What is Dead City from The Walking Dead?

The official synopsis of Dead City from AMC describes the show as an adventure for Negan and Maggie. According to AMC, "Dead City envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror." We can only assume that Manhattan will be at least as civilized as, say, Jadis' Scavenger settlement, but that all still remains to be seen!

When is the Dead City release date?

Dead City will be released Sunday, June 18 at 10 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+. Subsequent episodes will air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

In summer 2022, Morgan revealed that the production of the series was underway with an Instagram post revealing a script for the show.

Morgan said in a statement about joining the spinoff (via Variety—before it was renamed Dead City), "I’m delighted that Negan and Maggie's journey continues. It's been such a ride walking in Negan's shoes, I'm beyond excited to continue his journey in New York City with Lauren. Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world? The backdrop is amazing, but it's the story that Eli Jorné cooked up that is even better. Buckle up folks, Isle of the Dead is going to reinvent the TWD Universe. Huge thank you to Dan McDermott, Scott Gimple and AMC for having us back for more… we simply can't wait."

What is the Maggie and Negan spinoff Dead City?

Maggie and Negan will join forces in New York City's Manhattan for Dead City. As of this writing, it's unclear exactly how the unlikely duo will end up in the Big Apple. One thing that's safe to assume: Negan's signature leather jacket will help him fit right in with any hipster survivors he encounters during their journey to and in New York.

Yes! The trailer gives us a deeper understanding of the dire situation in Manhattan, which is overrun not only by walkers but by dangerous residents.

AMC also released a teaser for Dead City on Nov. 21, 2022. In it, we see Maggie and Negan with a small group hiding from walkers, as well as walkers that have evolved a bit to look more like straight-up monsters than undead humans. We also see some New York City landmarks and references, including a sign with spray paint that reads, "Dawn Lincoln Center come kill with us."

In a teaser released on Feb. 26, 2023, we see why Maggie and Negan have teamed up: Maggie's son, Hershel Rhee, has been kidnapped.

Another teaser trailer was released in late March 2023. In it, we see that there's been a major time jump, leading to a recasting of Hershel Rhee, who's a teenager in Dead City.
