You big dummy!

Best theme music ever. By the immortal Quincy Jones, of course!

u/st-jeb avatar

Every once in a while that theme will pop in my brain and I start humming it,lol. This and the Jeffersons was sung many times on a 223mile hike.

Esther, you're so ugly they used a mold of your face to make gorilla cookies

Edited

“Watch it suckah.”

LMAO! 🤣 I remember that episode! She usually replied, "You old heathen!" or something similar.

The funny thing is, the actress was a good friend of Redd Foxx and was a stand up comedian. Her stand up routine was positively filthy! I mean, X rated stuff. It's so ironically funny that they had her play a "churchy" woman in the show.

My mom was a huge Red Foxx fan. I know I shouldn't be hearing those dirty comedy albums but every day when my mom was at work, I was listening to filthy Red Foxx and Richard Pryor!

So seeing Red Foxx on this show was always so tame to me. I was a young kid with the secret I knew this man was funny and filthy as hell. I'd be sitting there with my family watching it every week and listening to my secret Redd Foxx comedy albums alone.

Redd was one of a kind. I still love him in Harlem Nights so much. It's hard for me to pass it by when flipping thru channels. Redd and Richard together were what comedy is supposed to be

u/leeharveyteabag669 avatar

Holy shit I did the exact same thing as you. My brother and I would throw on red foxes album when my parents went out for the night." You got to wash your ass!"

u/BluezHippie avatar

This makes me laugh so loud right now. Wonder how many of us did the same thing? Haha

Redd Foxx’s given name was John Elroy Sanford did you know that????!!!!

u/mjrydsfast231 avatar

Weird. Literally yesterday, I said aloud to my gf "I wonder what Red Foxx's real name is?" Thanks for that!

And this Louisville Slugger will knock you out!

Did you know LaWanda Page who played Aunt Esther was a comedienne and did commercials for Church’s Chicken?????!!!

Aunt Esther was one fierce character and she hated Fred Sanford. My favorite, though, was Grady.

Remember one episode where Fred was in St. Louis and Grady was in charge Aunt Esther came over and he said Lester and she said Esther no l and he said well Merry Christmas to you too????!!!!!

“911 Santa’s in my kitchen eating all my Church’s Chicken…an’ he ain’t brought NO toys!!” 😂 yes, I knew. She was a comedian from St. Louis, old friend of Redd Fox, also from St. Louis. Her standup equally as funny as Fox’s!

Redd Foxx and Lawanda Page were on the Dean Martin roast of Frank Sinatra m…I hope you will reply to this

u/Dbarkingstar avatar

I vaguely recall those old Martin roasts. Some are on YouTube now. Can’t remember Frank’s roast, but if Redd & Lawanda were guests, it had to be funny!

Fun fact…..Redd Foxx was in his early 50s and Grady was in his 40s during the show. Both looked 70+

u/Joe_Metaphor avatar

I think Foxx was 48 when he filmed the first season.

Born in 22, first season was 72. They both look 25 years older though, it’s crazy.

They did "age" them in the show with makeup, hair coloring, and costumes. Redd looked more his age in real life.

I loved when Rolo would drop by to get Lamont to go out. Also liked the old Ford truck

Remember the episode where the girl group The Three Degrees guest starred and Rollo was their manager????!!!

u/Midnight-Rambler69 avatar

We want the 3 degrees!

The scene where Lamont and Rollo are trying to figure out how to get rid of the “wild parsley “ growing in the yard is my favorite of the entire series

u/Midnight-Rambler69 avatar

Wasn’t Grady in that episode also?

u/mjrydsfast231 avatar

In a dark twist, Foxx was filming another show and had a heart attack. Other actors and crew didn't immediately react because they thought he was doing the Fred Sanford thing.

That show was The Royal Family on CBS co starring Della Reese several years before Touched by an Angel

Ripple and Champipple!!!!

Just about everything Red says in this show makes me laugh. He’s so hilarious

"Lamont, you big dummy!"...

u/Technical_Air6660 avatar

Loved this show.

Edited

Aunt Esther was a trip!

Fred really "punched above his weight" when he had that pretty Donna Harris, played by Lynn Hamilton, as his girlfriend. I had a real crush on her back in the day! She was like Hillary on Abbott and Costello.

This show was gold!!!! Maybe the best of our childhood.

I hope y’all will reply to this Sanford and Son was Norman Lear’s second hot series after All in the Family

It was #1 for a long time.

He was super funny in real life as well.

One of the best shows ever. I watched it as a kid and now watch it with my adult children. Still as funny as ever, maybe even more so.

Ya big dummy.

Woody - "I'VE LISTENED TO YOU INSULT MY WITH FOR LONG ENOUGH! SO I'M GONNA BE WAITING RIGHT OUTSIDE!! Where I don't have to hear it anymore."

I'm coming Elizabeth!

Fred at the Mexican restaurant is still my favorite.

u/Friendlyattwelve avatar

And still , whenever the porch gets out of hand , I go in with “bham bham bha da 🎶

My wife and I when one of us doesn’t clean up after ourselves or sees a junky car start wah wahing that theme song to each other.

Watching it on TUBI right now!

You crazy Grady!

u/New_Landscape_1876 avatar

Personally, I liked the theme song. But, growing up, we had a pet dog that seemed to hate it. He would howl loudly every time Sanford & Son came on.

How’d you like five across your lip??????

Lol, I can, too. Loved Julio and his goat, too. A great show.

Esther if you put your face in dough it’d be gorilla cookies or something like that

I had a Soldier that whenever he walked, the theme song would pop into my head. His swagger fit it perfectly, so naturally I told EVERYBODY.

u/Nostalgic-Soul-76 avatar

Stick your face in some dough and make gorilla cookies.

The theme song is my walkout song for boxing matches.

Last time the announcer said out loud “Is … Is that Sanford and Son?!?”

I still watch this all the time!

u/Xyrq2441Zmpl avatar

“Hello, Missing Persons? I’m missin’ a person…”

It's much filthier as an adult.

u/NobodyAshamed4627 avatar

I got some champagne and ripple...i call it champipple...i love this show

You big dummie!

u/hillbilly4skin avatar

It's one of my all-time favorites,,,it's aging very well,,still hilarious 😂

"Hey, what's the good word, Pops?"

"The good word, Rollo, is when you say good-bye."

Fred, on the phone: "Is so-and-so there?.....Oh, really, when will he be home?...Two to five, oh okay."

And seeing the red pick up truck loaded with all that junk!

That truck was a classic!
