Interesting, well-researched work on the Empress of Austria. Portrayed her, I believe accurately, as a woman of some intellect; her love of Hungary, her obsession with being away from her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph (who deeply loved her) and the neglect of her duties as Empress of Austria, and her propensity for lavish spending. The author also writes about Elizabeth's charm, generosity and kindness when it suited her. She loved horses and rode them beautifully, excelling in equestrian events.

The author also honestly tells about Elisabeth's willfulness, selfishness, obsession with her beauty, her lack of deep concern for her daughter, HSH Archduchess Gisele, and for her son, Crown Prince Rudolph by being continually away for long periods of time during the critical times of their lives. From the book, one can discern that she imposed this loneliness on herself. It certainly portrays her mental instability after the events at Mayerling and the overwhelming guilt and grief she had about Rudolph's death.

Joan Haslip has the particular British quality that reveals the historical, the personal, along with a most subtle point of view, and having absorbed completely the history of Vienna, Franz, Elizabeth and the many researchers before her, it might be my favorite among the many accounts. Though I do not think the title is entirely correct. The Empress was not “lonely” anymore than anyone else living or not — she may have preferred it — and the reasons why are well included

This biography or the Empress Elizabeth, aka Sisi, is not just well-researched and written; it provides deep insight into the life, times, and struggles of a spirited young woman, ill-prepared for her royal role. Much myth surrounds Elizabeth (not unlike other compelling, yet flawed "royal" women: Eva Peron and Princess Diana, come to mind). Haslip presents an honest, yet empathic portrait of this incredibly beautiful and selfish, yet charming, sad, and self-destructive woman (the first anorexic?), admired by many and beloved by a few (especially her long-suffering husband, the last Habsurg ruler, Franz Joseph). Anyone planning to visit Vienna should read this fascinating book. Then visit the Imperial Apartments in the Hofburg to experience Sisi's world first hand and wonder what she might have become in another time or place.

Empress Elizabeth is a very interesting person to me. I became interested in her after reading another book in which she was a character. I think it was well researched and written. I was visiting Germany while reading it, and was thrilled to be in Bavaria where the Wittlesbachs ruled. It is a biography, and to me, was very readable. I learned a lot of history that complimented my trip.

although i’m sure it’s researched wonderfully, the author has a tendency to berate sisi and criticize her for things as simple as a depression - something plenty understandable for a woman of her situation, unprepared and unfamiliar with the rigidity of the viennese court. they also tend to go on political tangents, so if you find you want a book that focuses selectively on sisi, i would not recommend this one.
