Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- wiggymanCarshalton, UK62 contributionsSteep & rocky walk at low tide. Firstly, take coins for pay & display parking as the RingGo thing doesn’t work. We were in the car with toilet block in it, which is handy. There is a pub right next door. From the car park It took us 3 hours & 10 mins to walk to the lighthouse & back.
Please check the low tide times before you go. We arrived just over a hour before low tide to begin our journey down the fairly steep cliff top hill which gave us time to get to the beach as the tide was moving out to its furthest point. We went down the “cow gap” trail to the beach, there are a set of metal steps at the bottom, the steps don’t go the the ground, so you have to drop down the last few feet to the ground. It can be very dangerous if the tide comes back and you’re trapped along the beach so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get along the beach if you plan on walking to the lighthouse & back out again..not worth risking your life over so plan your trip well.
Once on the beach it’s about an hours walk to the lighthouse & good solid footwear is advised as it’s a very rocky walk. Once at the lighthouse you can climb the stairs up onto it, there is a handrail that I strongly advise using as the steps may be covered in seaweed.
I’d say about 10-15 mins of our walk was Spent stopping & taking photos but the rest of the time we just pushed ahead to get it done.
The walk back up the hill to the car park was horribly steep & took at least 20mins longer than on the way up. It was exhausting!! …but my 7 year old daughter managed it & i’m pushing 50 & I did it so don’t be scared to give it a go, just be prepared. I went with my wife & two kids, I’m not sure we’d rush to do it again in my life, but very glad we experienced it at least once.
We went in April 2024 on a sunny Sunday morning and it was a lovely but tiring adventure, great view over Eastbourne from the top.Written 26 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Parking is in a pay and display car park (free to National Trust members) and refreshments are available from the NT Birling Gap cafe. Adjacent to the cafe is an informative Visitor Centre. Toilets are also avalaible here.Written 18 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- david w1 contributionWe had a fantastic afternoon visiting for the first time.
It’s very reasonably priced, the staff were extremely polite and helpful and the whole site was very clean and well presented.
My two children (6yrs & 2yrs) loved the play equipment and we all enjoyed the train ride so much that we had to have a second ride!
There was a good choice on the lunch menu and the food was served promptly which was delicious.

- chrissieb94Dorset, UK2,098 contributionsIt was lovely to walk along the promenade on a beautifully sunny day in October. There are different levels to walk - beach level, street level and one in between. Beautifully maintained flower bed border the walkways. There are a number of cafes and a bandstand (which did have a concert on one evening).Written 30 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
