Review
John Wayne was more than an actor; he was a force around which films were made --Ronald Reagan

The other disc is a hodgepodge of films, trailers and older documentaries laying around thrown together. They’re all pretty interesting for Wayne fans and well worth a look since they feature footage of Wayne, John Ford, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart talking about westerns. Finally, one disc has a western serial which are unique in their own right.
For under $10, this set isn’t just a bunch of royalty free westerns, it’s 25 Wayne projects that normally fly under the radar and while none are on the level of The Searchers or True Grit, it’s fun to watch stuff that used to play in old single house theaters back in the day or on your local UHF station.
Note: Newer releases have the discs all locked together on one spindle rather than separate envelops. See picture

The packaging is nice and is standard for a DVD. All four discs are stacked one on top of another, which could cause them to become scratched, eventually.
The landing screen at the start of each disc is nice. The DVD menu is easy to navigate. Each film's introductory screen is nice also. The feature film is on the left in its own box surrounded by a photo of The Duke.
There is the option of scene selection.
There are no subtitles available, and the films are in English only.
There is no "play all" option so the DVD resumes the main menu upon the completion of the feature film.
The films in this compilation haven't been digitally remastered. So, on some the quality of the video and audio is about average for an old, black and white, film; and, on others it is mediocre at best.
Some of the films have been cut and are missing several minutes, or entire scenes. That part is a major bummer. They're not super important scenes, but it's the principle. Why cut them out?
Almost every film is in black and white. That doesn't bother me at all considering that almost all of them are difficult or impossible to find on DVD because they are among John Wayne's early or not very popular works. The only colour film is McLintock. The quality on that isn't great. It is also missing several minutes of an entire scene. That was disappointing as McLintock is one of my favourites.
There is a documentary: "The American West of John Ford" and a featurette by Mill Creek Studios. The documentary is good, and the featurette is okay. The former is narrated by John Wayne, and the later by the studio.
There is also a series of theatrical trailers. Those were enjoyable, however, they are all for films not included in this boxed set.
My father was a huge fan of westerns, and of John Wayne, so my childhood was spent watching a lot of these type of films, with my dad. I grew to like them, and The Duke, too.
This DVD set offers 25 classic films, some not available individually, for a more than reasonable price. Purchasing it seemed like a no-brainer. I am slightly disappointed but not majorly bummed out. It's a good compilation but it's the minor details that are bothering me.
Overall I give it four stars because of the selection of hard-to-find films, the value compared to the cost, and the amount of work that obviously went into production of this DVD compilation. As mentioned the landing screens are nicely done, the selection is good, and the packaging is decent quality.
This compilation is definitely more suitable for die hard fans of The Duke, and not someone who just likes westerns or old movies. One has to be a fan to appreciate this boxed set.
