More info

The Monastrell grape is known in France as Mourvedre, widely used in the Rhone and Provence. Jumilla (who-me-ya) is a small wine growing area made up of small plateaus in the region of Murcia on the Mediterranean coast of South Eastern Spain and was renowned for producing full bodied red wines. The wine industry in this area received a big boost when Phyloxera hit neighbouring France, resulting in the increased demand for Jumilla wine. This area was affected by Phyloxera as late as 1989 and this offered the region an opportunity to modernise and refocus on the production of lighter more elegant wines. This change attracted a number of international producers to set up wineries here throughout the 1990's.

The area has a harsh hot climate with daily temperatures regularly hitting 40°C and scant rainfall. However the limestone soil retains some of the moisture and the elevated plateaus afford the Monastrell vines some respite from the intense heat.
