Gameplay[]

Players can choose between four characters. After completing the game the first time, a fifth playable character and the ability to customize a character become available.

By buying and selling goods at ports, players earn gold which they can use to buy new ships, repair and arm their ship, and buy items from Traders that improve their ship's performance or decrease enemy ship performance.

Gold can also be earned by fighting pirates and fighting a port to free it from pirates, with the latter also earning the player gems that can be sold. Money deposited in the bank will earn interest, while moneylenders will charge interest to loan the player money.

In contrast to Tradewinds, the player can only own one ship at a time. However, when purchasing a stronger ship, all cannons and ammunition are transferred to the new ship. During combat, only one enemy ship can be targeted at a time unless the player has purchased special weapons.

The game offers two modes of play: Free Trade Mode and Story Mode. Free Trade Mode operates the same as Tradewinds, with the focus solely on commerce and pirate battles. This mode does not appear to have an end or stopping point.

Story Mode provides additional features in the form of quests offered by the Governors of the ports, additional goods that can be bought and sold, and new ports that can be visited after quests are completed.

Cargo[]

There are many different types of cargo to buy and sell, which you must then buy when and where it's low, and sell when and where it's high. Using your warehouse to buy stuff at it's minimum and selling later at it's maximum can greatly increase your profits.

For contraband items, it can be useful to save when having these on board, and restarting the game if you get caught. Also note that contraband items will be most expensive during the time they are contraband in a given port, so storing them in your warehouse and selling them once your home port has the contraband on it can yield amazing profits. Since contraband items do not show up in the market, to sell them you must choose the "sell all" option. You will then be given a price, which can be divided by how many you own to find the price offered.

Items[]

Main article: Tradewinds 2/Items

Traders can be found at some Alehouses and will buy and sell magical items that can increase the abilities of the player's ship or decrease the enemy's abilities. Other items are carried by the player and can provide benefits to them.

Ports[]

All ports have a Governor and Marketplace. Not all ports are available to all characters.

Warehouses can be upgraded with larger storage capacity by purchasing a new contract, up to a maximum of 9,999 items. In Free Trade mode, the player can only purchase the warehouse in their home port.

Main article: Tradewinds 2/Characters

Four characters can initially be selected. Once the game has been completed the first time, a fifth character becomes available, as does the custom character generator.

With the custom character generator, players can create their own character using a combination of Name, Gender, Race and Class. Customize your character to create your own adventure.

Russell Van Gregor mini portrait
Russell Van Gregor: After losing his father to the sea as a boy and his mother when he was a young lad, Russell Van Gregor quickly rose through the ranks on a ship. His enormous strength, strength of character and kindness soon brought him captaincy of his own ship. Not forgetting his own past, he has supported orphanages and schools.
Christine McGowan mini portrait
Christine McGowan: The youngest daughter of a wealthy merchant family in Port Royal, Christine McGowan fled when a feud with her family turned into a riot. She learned the art of the blade and cultivated a fondness for humiliating those who would underestimate her skill. Her success led her back to her father, but after he insisted in putting her wealth in his bank, she started over and chose a life on the ocean.
Ignacio Verdugo mini portrait
Ignacio Verdugo: As a boy, Ignacio watched his father be killed by Sebastian LaRoche over the price of a fine sword. Though he attempted to carry on the family blacksmithing business, he closed it after struggling for a few years and chose wielding a blade over forging them. His charm and dedication helped him rise up in the world in his search for LaRoche and led him to fall in love with 237 women.
Adia Azul mini portrait
Adia Azul: A young woman born a slave on a sugar plantation in the French colony of Louisiana, she escaped into the deepest parts of the bayou where no sensible man would follow. Years later after the solitude and peril of the swamp, she signed on with a pirate crew. There, she took the name Adia Azul, and used her sharp mind, razor-sharp wits and sharp blades to hold her own on a ship with such lawless men and gradually won her command of the ship.
Sebastian LaRoche mini portrait
Sebastian LaRoche (unlocked after completing the game): Though no one knows where or when he was born, what is known is his ruthlessness and single-mindedness. Those who have not crossed his path count themselves fortunate. The unfortunate are well advised to surrender all valuables and pray for mercy, for whether they are alive or dead matters not to him.

The descriptions above are summaries and are not found in the game. For the official descriptions, see the Tradewinds 2 characters page.

Glitches and Errors[]

  • Your ship's log will record when you encounter pirates on your way to a port, but will incorrectly list the port you sailed from in the "on your way to" line.
  • Some tasks may not be worded correctly, making them look like they cannot be completed in time. For example, being sent to purchase an item from another port that is needed the same day. Sailing between ports takes a week unless a storm hits. However, the wording error does not actually affect the task and it can be completed.

Trivia[]

The Pine Place Market in Santo Domingo is an homage to the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, not far from the Sandlot Games office.
