Dan Aykroyd Is Separating From Wife Donna Dixon After Nearly 40 Years But May Not Divorce

The couple made an official statement to People confirming that although they are separating, they will remain legally married at this time.
The Ghostbusters actor met his actress wife on the set of the 1983 comedy Doctor Detroit. The two were married later the same year. They went on to share the screen in a number of films, including Twilight Zone: The Movie, Spies Like Us, The Couch Trip, and Exit to Eden.
"After 39 years as a couple we are now on separate life paths. We remain legally married, co-parents, co-workers and business partners," the pair shared in their joint statement.
"This is our choice in loving friendship."
Dan and Donna share three daughters: 32-year-old Danielle, a singer-songwriter who professionally goes by the name Vera Sola; 28-year-old Belle; and 24-year-old Stella. The family reportedly splits their time between Los Angeles and Ontario, Canada.
Dan has pretty recently spoken fondly of Donna. In previous years, he's been known to drop occasional insights into their relationship.
"You gotta find the right person — look them in the eye, have them look back, and know their soul," he told The Tampa Bay Times.
"She's a Southern woman who is understanding and doesn't mind dealing with the boys from time to time. I call her the White Goddess. And I'm the Green Demon."
Dan and Donna met at an interesting time in both of their lives. Not only were they enjoying their careers, but both had experienced previous notable engagements. Dan was engaged to Carrie Fisher, who later broke it off and reunited with ex Paul Simon. Donna was previously engaged to Paul Stanley, lead singer of Kiss.
The fact that the two will not be formally divorcing has raised eyebrows. Many wonder if this is leaving the door open for a possible reconciliation or if there are other matters that the couple doesn't want to grapple with in legal proceedings.
