The here & now — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate

The here & now

The fire chief replied to my letter and warned darkly about the dangers of “firing burning things up into the sky.” But no, he said, there isn’t any local bylaw preventing a non-politically-correct guy from lighting the night on July the first.

So I will. From the roof of the wee bank which, thankfully, is built out of limestone with a copper lid. Perfect for the zombie apocalypse. Or, in this case, taking a last stand against the social justice warriors, history erasers, culture cancellers and others who are choosing to dump on the nation. They can turn out, watch the fireworks and share a can of Bluenose Beer. Or they can blame me (and you) for the actions of people long since dead.

I’m ready. And Dorothy is patiently waiting to get her laundry room back…

Did you hear that Victoria (of all places) just canceled Canada Day? Councillors voted unanimously to scrap a planned event after a native dance group pulled out. In fact the Indigenous protest movement “Idle No More” has been flooding social media lately trying to get the country’s 154th  birthday nixed (#cancelCanadaDay). This has also led to the toppling of statues like that of 19th Century educator Egerton Ryerson in Toronto a few days ago. His decapitated head now sits atop a pike on a ridge on disputed land in Caledonia. It is an arresting and brutal sight.

Idle No More is planning anti-Canada Day rallies in several cities because, “Canada was built on 500 years of genocide and that genocide continues to this day as cited in the report by the national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.”

Without question, we all regret residential schools existed. That’s why there was a commission formed and reparations paid. The apologies have been legion. We also regret the killing of the London family last weekend. Humans can often, inexplicably, do what animals never contemplate – be evil, hurtful, hateful and murderous without reason or threat. The last residential school closed decades ago. The Muslim folks perished days ago. We’re unable to change the past. We can certainly improve the here and now. Maybe that should be the focus.

Why celebrate a nation state?

Well, this one works. Big, roomy, gorgeous, normally peaceful, usually tolerant, diverse and, by global standards, rich. Most people own no guns, are educated, productive and decent. Yes, real estate costs too much, politicians spend irresponsibly and the weather can suck, but there’s a reason so many want to come here. Canada is better than most everywhere else. Not perfect. Just an upgrade.

My patriotism (different from nationalism) amped the day I set foot on the green carpet of the House of Commons. Our system of government has serous flaws (detailing them got me kicked out, actually) but I wish everybody could wander around Centre Block for a while, touch the stone walls, look up at the library ceiling, walk the Hall of Honour or see the depictions of WW1 above the Senate chamber. As an MP and minister I tried to faithfully represent voters, gaining the chance to traverse Canada and comprehend it. As a political person, I failed. Not a party guy. But my awe for this place swelled.

Since then, more. I spent a decade doing lecture gigs in hotel ballrooms and church halls everywhere. Now my colleagues and I try to help folks from all over the country get some financial peace and stability. Each day reminds what gifts we have in common – searching for the best life in a place where the horizon is endless. You can be angry and self-marginalized in Canada, or not. It’s a choice. Hard to imagine anyplace else where opportunities are greater.

Well, enough gushiness. Let’s just blow some stuff up.

About the picture: ” I have been following your blog since the beginning,” writes David from Mill Bay on Vancouver Island. “My wife and I even attended a speaking event you hosted in YVR over a decade ago!  You have taught me many important financial lessons and I spread the news about your blog whenever I enter a convo with a young soul who is searching for the light. This is Quincy.  She is our 17-month-old English black lab who brings us much love and joy and exercise daily.  The neighbour girls (aged 4 & 2 years) brought Q a new rubber toy today and this is her approach before “El Destructo” appears.    Jekyll and Hyde. Please keep up the great work and thanks for all of your wisdom over the years.”

Chris Serran you are so right. It is common sense which seems there is not much common sense anymore. The way I see it, is all about selling as much product as possible and make everyone too interdependent on each other with more centralized authority. This is the way globalism works. Trade is a great benefit for everyone but to what extent do you give up your local, regional, national control. This is the crux of the real problem we have today. People don’t want to believe this.
———————
Agree.
It’s a fine balancing act. As we have found out, it’s a good idea to produce vital medications and medical equipment in-house, rather than outsourcing it to other countries.
It costs more, but the pace of mind is worth it, in my opinion.

The cancel culture twits best review their positions before there’s real pushback from average people. Saturation point getting too close. It’d be nice if they took the do gooders, tree huggers and the rest of the pinkos with em and paid their own way to? Forgot this country is the best one to whine in. Perhaps JT can apologize? Disgraceful

Yeah, Victoria is pretty shocking these days. Took an elderly relative downtown yesterday for an eye appointment, could barely recognize the place. On the one hand generic overpriced condos, nicely juxtaposed with the masses of garbage heaped in shopping carts. Bizarrely complicated useless bike lane system, hopefully some addict won’t wander into your path coming down from their latest injection. Vans driving around the million-dollar properties with people looking for overdoses, narcan pens at the ready.

Meanwhile I hear they’re going to have to do something about the homeless housed in the arena because with things opening up they actually want to y’know, hold events and such. But they’re building a gazillion dollar new rec centre downtown because apparently, providing free food, shelter, and injection sites isn’t enabling enough. Good thing the city council has so much extra money I guess.

Put on the local Q100 and it’s still playing Loverboy from the 80’s. News is about the cancelling of Canada Day and celebration of the 100th anniversary of BC Liquor stores. Shades of the former U.S.S.R.

How can a city be beautiful, bland and a freak show all at the same time? Ugh.

Oh well, just passing through and couldn’t really get too fussed. Played ball hockey in the back yard with a nephew and niece, 10 & 5. Little beauties laughing with joy in the sunshine. Just got a $160,000 raise (admittedly my starting salary floor was low, $0) to do something I love with my science and expertise. Life is good even as the weather droops back to the usual dreary overcast and rain.

The diversity Marxists won’t be satisfied until they’ve renamed everything and erased our history.

Our founding fathers like Sir John A, and educators like Ryerson, had the best intentions, did not commit genocide, and tried to assimilate, educate and raise the standard of living of the natives. Native tribes often tried to genocide other native tribes. Bringing law and order, peace and good governance, education, infrastructure, agriculture, medicine, trade, commerce, universal health care, universal education of course are noble achievments, but today, all of those achievements are being slandered as “colonialism” and “genocide”.

Hey, if crimes were commited at the residential school in Kamploops and elsewhere and if abuse, rapes and murders happened, then by all means, let the police and justice system do their jobs. Let’s wait for the autopsies of the Kamloops graves to reveal the cause of death. Smallpox typically claimed 80% of children of all races. Other diseases ran rampant including the Spanish flu.

PM Harper already stood in the House of Commons and apologized for the abuses of the residential school system, tens of billions of compensation were paid, but it’s never enough.

Cancelling Canada Day, tearing down statues of our founding fathers, renaming schools and slandering our founders as genociders, calling every achievement of the modern world as “colonialism” and “racism” will not achieve anything but alienate a large number of patriotic, proud Canadians.

Canada is experiencing a slow-motion version of the Marxist Cultural Revolution that tore apart China in the middle of the 20 century. We’re going down that same path in this country and there will be a backlash if rational adults and politicians let Marxist bullies pull tantrums over each and every aspect of Canadian history.

Anyone who thinks “cancel culture” is going away is terribly naive.

Canadian culture IS cancel culture. Look at every business in the country: fully on board the progressivism and ‘cancel culture’ worldview. Look at our politicians, local, provincial and national. Nearby 100% supportive of progressivism and ‘cancel culture’. Look at our media and news; 100% supportive of progressivism and ‘cancel culture’.

I’m sorry to say it but if you don’t support progressivism and cancel culture you do not belong in Canada. This is not a country for you, there are dozens of countries with standards of living just as good as ours that you could migrate to. There may be a backlash to cancel culture in the US, as their politicians are starting to feel the heat from it (Biden’s struggles and Kamala’s visit to Central America for example) but here?

No way. Trudeau is the cancel culture prime minister, and he will rule this country for the next 20 years if he choses, because he reflects Canadian culture.

For the first 21 years of my life, I lived under one of the communists regimes behind the iron curtain.

The freedom of speech was officially inexistent, but very much alive in closer circles. We were openly despising the regime, and craving for the western freedom of the late 80’s. Being public about your opinion and thoughts was difficult, and could lead to drastic consequences.

I never thought I would come to Canada and have to revive my self-preservation mode, where anything I say or do has to be controlled in order to prevent framing and categorization. One tweet or discussion that is not aligned with the official line can get one categorized or even “cancelled”. Diversity of opinions is not tolerated, and questioning the official line comes with ad hominem results. The great debates and contradicting yet productive ideas that had a great contribution to the advancement of the western civilization are discouraged, and everyone who is not “with them, is against them”.

It is disconcerting to live this again.

This sounds approximately correct. Which means Canada will be going broke eventually. Unless we can get enough Indian/Chinese/Middle East folks (who don’t give a rip about lefty SJW battles and are hard to attack…) in here before the SHTF.

It’ll be a good show for those who built themselves a moat and can still afford popcorn!

But you never know. Look at the feminists struggling against the transgender activists. They never saw it coming. After a couple decades of trying to cancel Men in general (well, 3rd wavers anyway), now they themselves are being cancelled (TERF’s). Same thing with the Lesbian activists vs Trans activists (Lesbian erasure).

For all we know, the whole SJW circus might end up fighting amongst themselves until the silent majority has had enough, and finally lays the smack down.

No matter how it goes, I’ll be ready with popcorn and beer to watch the show, with the drawbridge fully pulled up…

History is a long list of less advanced cultures being taken over (usually violently) by more advanced cultures…

The natives of the land that would become Canada were stone aged people and mostly nomadic… we can cry now about how it all went down when people of the iron age showed up, but it went much better for them than it did for other cultures through history… just ask the Britons how things went when the Romans showed up. Or how things were when the Saxons came after that… Now its just part of history and no one is crying about how hard it was for people long dead.

#38 Moose on 06.11.21 at 1:47 pm

Totally agree with you Garth.
———————————–
Every immigrant coming to Canada was taught in English (French) and had to learn to speak English (French) and not their native language. New immigrants attending public school are also not taught in their native tongue. Out of the big city in small towns there where tiny one room schools and one teacher teaching all 8 grades. I myself remember getting the strap for acting up, which in todays times is unthinkable.
We need to learn from history and not forget about it. Todays standard are different from years ago and in the future they will be different again. I wonder what people will say in 50 years about todays cancel culture.

#39 Jack on 06.11.21 at 1:50 pm

Enough is enough with the handouts for the indigenous. When does it end? Maybe the government should just give them all a $100k / year salary in perpetutity … but that would likely only appease them for a few years. Then they’d want more and would be back out there protesting something we cannot change.

It sounds counterintuitive because you might be thinking you risk getting hit by the fireworks. But you fly around 4500 ft depending on your local elevation.

As for the birds… is there some high flying night birds that ignore the sounds of fireworks? I don’t understand how fireworks would be terrible for them.

There is one thing you can say for today’s sturdy conservative men and women.

Some of them sure play the victim card well.

*********

Careful, your ideological slip is showing.

Identity politics is built on victimhood…no one does/is doing it better than democrats.

Trolling is your style though…

M57BC

VicPaul, I’m in my mid 70’s and have been a paid up, card carrying Progressive Conservative member since I was eligible and until they went away. While I volunteered on many election campaigns I also was a paid staff member on two provincial ones which punched my ticket to a national one which led to me being invited to Ottawa. I’ve truly seen how the sausage is made.

Vic, old buddy, the conservative party in Canada no matter what you call it now, used to be what is called a “big tent” party. Open, inclusive, policies that made sense for Canadians.

It no longer is that as exemplified by your petty little post questioning my purity and inferring that I am trolling. And it is no longer electable in its current guise especially when it has gatekeepers like you turning folks away.

Look at it, across the nation. Kenny is on the run from his own caucus with the NDP and WildRose polling ever higher. Moe is failing, Ford is flailing and you are busy turning folks away with your infantile slotting of people on some sort of purity chart.

Last year I donated a bit over $10,000 to various individual conservative candidates and causes across Western Canada. While not friends I know Preston Manning well enough that he recalls my name whenever we pass by one another. I am current in true conservative circles in western Canada, I am consulted via meetings, email and etc from time to time.

While I am not vital to the re-imagining of true political conservatism in Canada I like to think that I am there, participating, helping where and when I can. People return my emails, my phone calls. They call me!

What have you done Vic?

You know, VicPaul, a good lawyer never asks a question in court that she doesn’t already know the answer to. You would be wise to modify that truism to your postings on here.

I immigrated to Canada over 20 years ago at a young age. Spent most of my early adulthood battling depression and overly negative and angry thoughts. But one thing I’ve always been grateful for is living in this country. Yeah, it has changed a lot in past 2 decades but my heart belongs to Canada from the day I landed here.

Finally starting to feel better from decade long depression and decided to work hard to change my physique from skinny little guy to healthy looking strong muscular dude. Plus weight lifting keeps depression away like Mr. Turner keeps anti-vaxxers away from this blog.

My goal is to get a tattoo of Canadian flag in couple of years to celebrate being in this great country for 25 years. Combination of Canadian flag and number 25 on my big bulging right bicep. Open to ideas for a tattoo if anyone wants to share images.

Enough is enough with the handouts for the indigenous. When does it end? Maybe the government should just give them all a $100k / year salary in perpetutity … but that would likely only appease them for a few years. Then they’d want more and would be back out there protesting something we cannot change.
——

Yep. I got nothing against the natives. Neither do I draw parallels between regular aboriginal folks and their brain dead activist groups. I’m sure they’re working just as hard as I am trying to keep up with the latest PC term on how they are to be addressed.

But at some point, it has to be understood that smashing a statue of some historical figure’s head off, and sticking it on a pike, is not endearing you to anyone.

Yeah, rotten things happen because there are rotten people and lets not forget self interest. It is a question for me because it only part of the problem. The thing I note from history (5,000 years of written history) is people’s behavior has not changed. Power is intoxicating.

Only a few wield it well but for what purpose? I have the book called “48 Laws of Power” – Justin fails and most of our “leaders”. IMO, T2 is a gameshow host ready to shed a tear on cue. It is a book full of stories of people that have been forgotten and the things they did though not kind but necessary for the times.

I will never forget T2 naming the provinces that made Canada but “forgetting” to mention Alberta while he was in Calgary. Apparently, stinging Alberta plays well back east – you will reap what you sow.

Three of my aunts became nuns and 2 volunteered to be Mother Superiors at residential schools. Apparently my father side grand mother was a fanatic RC. He had stories. The nuns were tough disciplinarians according to my father but not mean. One died in Africa from treating diseases. Even I got strapped at a public school. It was like a public execution. Chinese proverb – “kill a chicken to scare the monkeys”.

Then there was the third daughter who became an airline stewardess and married a mail man. Back in the day (70’s) if you were union you were golden. To this day I wonder how they got so much for so little. Still seems to exist (public servants) and “elites”.

I have got slapped and kicked in the ass. Things happen for a reason. Justified – okay. Intimidation – not. My decision.

My chart of the Average Prices of VANCOUVER and TORONTO Single Family Detached Houses, BITCOIN and GOLD all Denominated in USD is up: http://www.chpc.biz/bitcoin-gold–re.html

In May 2021 Bitcoin USD prices took a serious hit as sellers unloaded. Meanwhile Single Family Detached USD prices in Toronto and in Vancouver hit new highs as buyers have remained fully engaged since 1Q 2020 and exuberantly receptive to the pandemic pricing on offer. Gold bullion prices remained flat in relation to the other hot markets.

Chris Kimble updated his Bitcoin chart study:
https://kimblechartingsolutions.com/2021/06/bitcoin-head-and-shoulders-top-watch-this-support-level/

“Last November, we highlighted a cup and handle bullish pattern on Bitcoin that served as a base for a big rally. All together, Bitcoin rallied from roughly $4,000 last March to $64,000 this April! Wowsers! BUT… since peaking in April, Bitcoin has fallen over 50% to roughly $29,000. Cryptocurrency trading isn’t for the faint of heart!” Chris Kimble June 11, 2021

By the way, Chris offers a free trial to his charting service here: http://www.chpc.biz/free_trial_kimble_charting_solutions.html

I hope you have a blast with your fireworks and an awesome day on July 1.

““Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.”

Woke is no joke. The next decade will be a challenge if we continue to capitulate to the irrational.

Residential schools were an abomination, created by a progressivist elite who thought they knew what was best for those they forcibly took on as wards. Yes, they were also racist, but the racism alone wouldn’t have caused nearly as much damage as the progressivism did. Keep government small, and never allow it to have the power to take anyone’s kids.

What happens today depends on what happened yesterday, down through the ages. So if Columbus’ fleet of 3 had been sunk Oct 11, 1492 before reaching today’s Cuba, that means all of the events that have occurred on these 2 continents since then never happen. Other things would’ve that we can’t predict, meaning none of us is born. Including the woke.

Most people don’t know what we’re up against. What I’ll call the dialectic left (neo-marxist, critical theorists, woke) use philisophical methods that are specifically designed to succeed in an operational sense. Most of us, people of goodwill and decency, are totally unequipped to deal with a philosophy that intends to take advantage of our society’s need for criticsm to progress and to weaponize it. Our elites are capitulating. Most people instinctively understand the bad faith at work here, but have no way to articulate that. Those who want to know more and are bookishly inclined should read Hicks’ work on postmodernism, and there is excellent work by James Lindsay online to understand this more. Because we’ll continue to have our rear ends handed to us by these creeps until we understand why they think what they think, and prepare ourselves to say no.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Refusing to acknowledge why a portion of the population isn’t so keen to celebrate Canada, especially this year, is wilful ignorance. Victoria made a hard choice which will more than likely be forgotten by next year, and will have no affect on the history, but it might reassure a marginalized population that they are valued, and that seems to me to be a very Canadian action. All the tiles of the mosaic need the same attention if the picture is going to look its best.

Being ‘not so keen’ to celebrate Canada Day is a far cry from the Indigenous protest group’s plans to actively demonstrate against it, and attempt to disrupt others marking a national anniversary. I think less of people who act that way. Don’t you? – Garth

I understand life at at the Residential Schools was not great. My issue is people judge a situation without considering the alternatives. What would life have been like for the children if the schools did not exist? Are you sure it would have been better? It is impossible to rewind time and watch both alternatives unfold simutaniously, but if you could, this is how things should be compared/evaluated.It could be, the lives of the children were better off in balance compared to being isolated. The same with past leaders accomplishments or failures. What would have happened had they not lead the way? People will say Sir Winston Churchill was a cold ruthless leader, but that was what was required . What would life be like in Briton now had Churchill not existed ? There are opportunity costs with every decision/path taken, the alternative benifet/harm of not going another way. These potential opportunity costs are not wighed in as they should be. IMHO

#89 Trojan House on 06.11.21 at 4:29 pm

“Idle No More is planning anti-Canada Day rallies in several cities…”

Really? I thought protesting was not allowed. Freedom rallies have been shut down (sometimes by the courts as in Nova Scotia), and protestors fined or arrested (as in Quebec) because they would be breaking public health orders of no gatherings, etc.

Protesting lockdowns = not allowed. Protesting against history = allowed.

#90 wallflower on 06.11.21 at 4:33 pm

fireworks are so much fun … but …

Along with lead, titanium, strontium, and copper are commonly found in fireworks. “Although people are only exposed to these substances for a short time each year, they are much more toxic than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Dr. Gordon

Fireworks create highly toxic gases and pollutants that poison the air, the water and the soil, making them toxic to birds, wildlife, pets, livestock — and people

Fireworks create a toxic fog of fine particulates, poisonous aerosols and heavy metals
sudden loud noises, such as those created by fireworks explosions, are a health hazard too. Not only are these sounds inescapable, but fireworks can damage hearing (ref), trigger mental health episodes in those who suffer from PTSD (ref), and can lead to life-threatening injuries to pets, livestock, wildlife and birds

Did you know:

Cats have 4 rows of whiskers. They can move the top 2 rows independently of the bottom 2 rows.

When a cat died in ancient Egypt, family members would shave their eyebrows in mourning.

The most popular pedigreed cat breeds in the USA are 1. Persian, 2. Maine Coon, and 3. Exotic Shorthair.

Cats today live about twice as long as they did 50 years ago.

Cats have between 30 and 50 million hairs on their bodies.

Garth,
I’m personally, is categorically opposed to canceling the holiday and turning it into a commemoration.

My vote is not that important because I realize that my contribution to the Canadian economy is not as great as from another Canadians . I’m the first generation expatriate. My contribution to history of Canada is nil, if you do not take into account my work at the polls in the last three elections.

BUT!!!!!!
My 3 grandchildren’s were born in Canada and I will not let anyone take away this wonderful summer holiday from them. I want them to be proud of their country and its history. On this day, they will meet with friends, celebrate with everyone and start up fireworks.

Just read what they write. What an idiot should be it takes to think so:

There’s a rule on Remembrance Day that you can’t clap, you can’t make noise. It’s a day of remembrance, of mourning, of paying tribute and respect to people who died. To me, the only way to move forward is if we turn Canada Day into a day of remembrance.

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2021/06/11/should-canada-day-be-cancelled-london-attack-kamloops-discovery-stir-debate-over-how-to-mark-july-1.html

Don’t spoil the holiday for all Canadians.

“Tell me,” says his friend, “is your cow by any chance from Camrose?”

“Yes, she is!” says the farmer. “How did you know that?”

Had a friendly chat today with the realtor I used 5 years ago to find my current rental, haven’t heard a peep from her in those 5 years.

Apparently things have “slowed down a little due to the third wave” so some properties that are a little out-dated have been sitting on the market so there might be a “deal”.

This might be a good sign of things starting to melt a little, but I’m not overextending myself and I’m currently comfy in my rental.

The realtor will keep an eye out for anything in my very low price range with very specific requirements, so I doubt she’ll find anything. But let’s see how the market reacts to reopening.

there are so many movements today that reject the past and wish to create a perfect world. Our country/world today is the result of people striving to prosper and improve their lot in life. That is our natural inclination. To renounce our past will end badly. There is no end to faults that can be found which will only lead to accusations against all demographics. This is destructive. Reason has to prevail. What counties are more diverse than Canada and the United States. The people claiming discrimination, can they prove there is a perfect Country. Can they list all of the worlds countries and show the level of acceptance of people of other races, tribes, demographics as a percentage of their total population. Can they then show a little appreciation for the people who did their best to make Canada and the United States what they are today.

fireworks are so much fun … but …

Along with lead, titanium, strontium, and copper are commonly found in fireworks. “Although people are only exposed to these substances for a short time each year, they are much more toxic than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Dr. Gordon

Fireworks create highly toxic gases and pollutants that poison the air, the water and the soil, making them toxic to birds, wildlife, pets, livestock — and people. Fireworks create a toxic fog of fine particulates, poisonous aerosols and heavy metals….

—————————————————————–

…In the “Pre-Politically Correct Period” known as the Fifties and Sixties, when I was teen-aged farm kid, I always assumed that when bottles, cans and especially rats, at the local Township dump came in contact with lit cannon-crackers, it was the explosive force of the gunpowder contained there-in that caused the destruction….

Now I’m SO glad to find out, as Dr Gordon pointed out, that it was a combination of “fine particulates, poisonous aerosols and heavy metals” that were to blame!

WHEW! My soul can rest easier now!

Light ’em up Garth, and celebrate this fine country!

Thanks for the blog Garth
Are Canadians racist?

After the leader of NDP says all Canadians are racists, I have been thinking about this comment and i believe it’s time to stand up and express my view. Your comment Mr. Singh truly offends me to the core. Canadians are not racist. I am not a racist.

My First thought Mr. Singh was born in Canada so I guess he includes himself in his comment?
My second thought why do you make these comments as a responsible member of Parliament?
Thirdly, Do all the people you represent in Burnaby south agree with your comment?
My final thought Canada is not a racist country. We are a very tolerant nation.

Canada has changed allot in the past 50 years, there have been many wrongs but Lets focus on the many good things!

I agree we cannot change the past I believe we must learn from the past and make it better. Are we going to burn all the books and destroy all the statues? Are we going to change history? I am curious what do you call yourself by changing the world to represent your views?

Does it make me a racist that I am against these Canada day boycotters?

“More guns than you think”

Hmm I would have thought Switzerland would be near the top of the list. Isn’t it the law that all men must own one for national defense?

Most of the guns Canadians own are hunting rifles or shotguns. Still, for home defense those will do.

Canadians do not by and large have an aversion to guns. It is the idea of carrying a hand gun around downtown that Canadians aren’t keen on like they are in the US. But with so much area and so much hunting the tools of that trade are quite popular. Even among the indigenous people. They don’t hate all of our culture.

When Trudeau instituted his most recent gun ban, he banned a bunch of guns most people don’t have. Maybe gang members. But he certainly didn’t ban hunting rifles. That wouldn’t have worked.

Farmers also like their guns because every now and then there is a bobcat that won’t leave the chickens alone.

But if you live downtown and don’t hunt a gun is an unnecessary tool. More of a liability than an asset.

It’s easy for those on the left to hate the country that gives them so much when the money is flowing freely and the party is on.

It gets more serious when the pendulum swings and the bills come due.

How many of those (incl. natives) who complain about the country, it’s history, legal and political systems, and so much else, derive some or all of their sustenance from the government, incl. heavily subsidized Universities?

Interesting that for the most part, it’s the half (or a bit less these days) who work in the private sector that appreciate what they have.

In particular, seniors who believe that they are owed free health care and pensions in retirement, might find themselves speaking to an empty room if one day the cuts come and they can’t find enough people who believe that we need to sacrifice for them for the country they built, because too many people hate the country they built?

Tearing apart the social fabric of a country will have just as devastating a result as printing the currency into the ground!

The narrative of the “genocide” of Canadian natives, peddled by the SJWs, is a sad joke.
The Holocaust, Cambodian genocide, Nazi genocide of ethnic Poles, Rwanda, etc… these are actual genocides. What happened here, while tragic and wrong, was not genocide.

#155 Dogman01 on 06.12.21 at 12:32 am

It is odd in the Western World how different “movements’ seem to run in parallel.

In Canada it is a woke group espousing the nonsense that the county’s foundation is a “genocide” of a stone age people.

In the USA it is the 1619 project another woke group espousing that their country’s foundation is slavery.

Seems to be a deliberate perhaps coordinated campaign to tear down and replace the story of two of the most prosperous and successful country’s in the world.

It also seems that the establishment of both counties are buying into the garbage. Are our elites now so weak and guilt ridden that they would be willing to destroy the vehicle that got them their privilege, or are they so diabolical and think that these movements can distract from their growing wealth and be harnessed for greater control and power.

Did Trump, western populism, Occupy Wall Street, scare them that much?

Unbelievable you’ve said that! I’ve kept this quiet till now but, on January 6th, when that great horned warrior appeared on our TV screen , I said “Holy crap honey, it’s that testosterone bulldozer guy from Garth’s blog!!!”

Aside from that Friday night laugh, can you identify a song for me, from back in the 90’s with the chorus “I will drug you and —- you, on the permafrost”? I have it on a worn, very poorly recorded from radio-CFNY cassette, it sounds a lot like Duran Duran, but obviously is far from that. The guitar/keyboard is full on glue sniffing sound effects (guessing) with oscillating volume. From the words, obviously CDN punk supreme. I’d love to know what it is to get a better copy. And all of the material from the same band.

I sure hope you can help.

Being ‘not so keen’ to celebrate Canada Day is a far cry from the Indigenous protest group’s plans to actively demonstrate against it, and attempt to disrupt others marking a national anniversary. I think less of people who act that way. Don’t you? – Garth
———————————————————-

You think less of people who exercise their freedom of speech and assembly in an attempt to improve the nation? Exercising ones democratic rights is a great way to celebrate this great country.

Thanks for this Garth. Imperfect we are no doubt, but where else in the world do you have such an opportunity to make your country just a little bit better, every single day.

Any time you need to know the name of a song, just type the lyrics into duckduckgo or google. If you put the word “lyrics” into the search it will work even better

As I have stated before, the irony is, most of the WOKEST SJWs, will be horrendous monsters by 2121 standards. Sadly, logic & perspective are slowly dying in this world…..

Even Bill Maher agrees with me!

Garth, I hope your celebration extravaganza will be spectacular and visible for many miles.
Your thoughtful comments about ‘cancel culture’ demonstrate the clear thinking and courage our leaders lack when confronted with irrational demands, and actions, of the ‘cancel culture’ gang. Conrad Black’s piece in this morning’s Post continues the theme. Wake up Canadians; we’re being duped.

Firearms in Canada… I own a firearm… I inherited it from my father.
Back in the day he raised five kids, and we often ate venison, moose meat, etc
I have no intention of disposing of this firearm because it reminds me of my father, but I promise… no intention of turning into some loony tune whack job running around threatening anybody

Residential schools, can’t help but add to the subject, busy as I am.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egerton_Ryerson

Ryerson’s profile is worth a read. Before Canada became a nation… yep, that long ago, Ryerson was put in a position of studying the western world’s educational systems throughout the advanced nations that had existed then to design a hybrid system of education for what we knew of Canada way back when. The system Ryerson came up with is largely the same system of education we use today.

Some of us may complain of a “compulsory” education where education is mandatory for all up to the age of 12 (now 16), or standardized text books, compulsory school libraries, standardized teachers, a defined chain of command with public boards of education, district superintendents and free public schools. Ryerson was in essence, the architect of Canada’s version of universal education. what could be more socialist than this? Raising taxes to spend on giving children their letters and numbers…

The rich man complains, “nearly 70% of my tax dollars is going to compulsory education and health. What a waste, everyone else should pay for it themselves” and campaigns voraciously to elect politicians who argue for conservative budgets for social programs or do away with them outright.

The illiterate man complains, “why are letters and numbers forced on my children, I can raise my children better than any government, my kids don’t need foreign ways.”

There’s a name for it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

Now, to be fair concerning criticisms, Ryerson did not support the education of women in general beyond the elementary level, due to a belief that their duty was to be wives and mothers. His form of misogyny (as it was not known then) did, in fact, spill over into the system of education Ryerson designed. In Ryerson’s defense, most men and a good number of women would have agreed with him. These were different times.

Universal education was new back then. Compulsory school for children up to the age of 12 was new to everyone and some folks of all brands didn’t like it from the folks who had to pay for it to the parental child slavers who missed their free labor at home to those from cultures who saw no benefit in it, while for others who saw the positive results of universal education had new hope for the future.

One brand who despised universal education was Canadian Indians who to this day, argue that residential schools created out of the native lack of participation to compulsory education i.e., universal education, led to cultural genocide. But didn’t everyone’s culture die just a little back then with the advent of universal education and even now, for the general greater good? Who here in this age can still claim that knowing letters and numbers is a bad thing save those suffering from Dunning Kruger? For ignorance is bliss but its still ignorance.

This is an age of complaint. We have no clue! We take it all for granted. 150 years ago there was no birth control, no cures for STD’s, no vaccines, just farming with horses and one bottom plows. Illiteracy is standardized and along with it low life expectancy is baked in. Forefathers were lucky to have cotton shirts on their backs back then and today we complain looking for compensation, its Dunning Kruger! (give it a half a minute):

For all we know, the whole SJW circus might end up fighting amongst themselves until the silent majority has had enough, and finally lays the smack down.

No matter how it goes, I’ll be ready with popcorn and beer to watch the show, with the drawbridge fully pulled up…

This is a circus that needs cancelling, most of all.
Meanwhile, I’ve got my liquor cabinet double-stocked, ready for these doltish SJWs to obliterate themselves!

On a side note, it is so peaceful on this blog, without the back-and-forth bickering of, “I know you are, but what am I”-inspired posts. I can actually hear the birds chirping again. :)

Even if they don’t, and the song remains the same decades into the future, 99% of this SJW stuff can’t really affect me outside my level of taxation. The fix is always government action or monetary reparation. I don’t live where I have to see it or hear it, the TV clicks off with a push of a button, and my tax remittances are kept as low as possible.

For every so-called “victim” group as designated by some goofy activist mob, the majority thereof are regular folks who just want to live their lives. As the activists get more violent, extreme, and visible – the deeper into the closet these majority folks go. They just don’t want to be associated with the garbage their peers and colleagues are treated to on TV.

IMHO, it’s important to separate “activists” from the “group” they claim to represent. Said “group” does not get to vote on the actions of “their” mob. The mob is empowered by the media, government, and employers – and they act almost purely out of anger these days.

Lots of hard working, God fearing Black families in the USA aren’t on board with BLM anymore. Lots of older, small town gays who’d rather not see another rainbow cross walk downtown. Lots of trans folks who really just want to live their preference quietly without a spotlight on their back. If I were a visible part of a “victim group” as designated by others, and the next thing I know there’s mass destruction taking place in the streets “on my behalf”, I’d be horrified too.

The activists, media, government, and corporations are whipping this stuff up. At the same time, I don’t have to listen, watch, read, or financially support any of it. The ultimate cost ends up being social…

…hence the bunker, moat and drawbridge!

I bet you can go thru some process of having it made inoperable and keep it legally as a family heirloom.

When my grandparents passed, both had a closet full of long guns from their farming days, all of them unregistered. No one in the family wanted them, so they all got turned into the Police. Kind of a shame.

My Dad did keep his own .22 though, he bought it as a kid and I got to hear a lot of stories of his exploits with it while growing up. It’s a bolt action single shot rifle, so a thief would probably just leave it – I don’t believe it works anyway. IIRC, my uncle sent it to my Dad in the mail (lol!) years before his parents passed. I’m amazed it made it to him!

Lots of wild grouse and rabbit ended up on the kitchen table thanks to young Dad and his .22 :)

About 8 years ago I rode my bike in to work on a -30 windy day and was sitting in my office drinking tea and the janitor lady came in to empty the trash can and I asked her if she ever has second thoughts about moving to Canada on days like this. She said ‘ I am from Eritrea. I was born into war and lived all my life in war. We didn’t want that for our children. We had a choice to come to Saskatchewan or California, We chose Saskatchewan because we thought that there would never be a war here’

Everyone should just be happy for what we have, all the freedom to do what we want, lots of food, healthcare and as much education as everyone wants or needs. There were a LOT of bad people in the “good old days”. There aren’t very many bad people in Canada any more, it just seems like it because every incident is reported on in detail on social media and the news.

Good luck with your fireworks display. Wish I could be there. Everything is bad for the environment, birds, animals, etc. At some point it gets to be too absurd to even think about.
10 to 50+ mg. of THC per person will take your fireworks to a whole new level of entertainment.
