Welcome to Mary Page Marlowe I have had the distinct honor of working alongside Tracy Letts for almost 25 years. In this time, I have directed him as an actor, interpreted his work as a playwright and, in the last decade, spent countless hours contemplating the state of both the American theater in general and Steppenwolf Theatre in particular. Without fail, every interaction with Tracy has served to enlighten, infuriate, inform and activate every aspect of my own work, forcing me to a kind of rigor and commitment that has, quite simply, made me better at not just what I do, but how I think about what we do. When I first read Mary Page Marlowe, Tracy’s haunting and elegant study of one woman’s life as seen through the characterizations of seven different actresses, I was again impressed by his ability to use his considerable skills as a storyteller to ask more not just of his medium, but of his audience and himself as he creates a world based not on the logic of time and sequence but of the illogic of emotion and randomness, and in so doing spectacularly capture the elusive truth of one very simple life. So often when one is working on a new play, the effort is in making sure the story holds together, that this new world you are creating makes sense or is constructed in such a way that the audience finds “likely” and therefore worthy. When I was younger, this process – the construction of a logical sequence, where A is followed by B and cause leads so directly to effect - served to order not just the worlds I was creating, but the world in which I lived. I loved a story with a solution – and I loved it even more if it was mine to find. But time passes, and life keeps coming, and as we try harder and harder to make sense of the trials and joys that befall us, we change, as do the stories we need and the stories we need to tell. What I love about Mary Page Marlowe is that it, and the person who imagined it, care not for order or sense anymore but are offering a story that shares a way that life can actually feel: like a stack of outof-order photographs laying in a box through which you yourself sift. Each photo a moment as real and as true as it is over and forgotten, and yet it lives forever in its moment: unchangeable, locked away, alongside all the others and in the end, that randomness is the story of you. I’ve realized, living inside of this play for the last year, that this story has helped me understand that long ago wish to be the orchestrator of a world I could completely manage rather than a real person inside a life I couldn’t control. And that’s because the story of Mary Page Marlowe understands that we are both the change and the unchangeable. There is pain in the randomness of life, for sure, but there is also a wonder. Time and its fraternal twin inevitability will have its way with all of us and, in the end, will write the story of who we were. The way I understand this for myself ? I no longer see myself as a dam that needs to control the rushing tide but as a stone along the river. I understand that I am shaped not by the bed on which I lie but by the water rushing over me, sometimes in a great torrent that upends me, certainly, but more often in a dependable and unchanging constant, one that rounds out edges, shines and dulls and changes my color. And I receive the water, no drop ever washing over me twice, and I take the shape I have to, the shape I am meant to, and in the end, I am all the shapes I have ever been. And that will be and has always been enough. I am grateful to have shared this and all of our other journeys with Tracy. One of the joys of being a Steppenwolf ensemble member is the opportunity to move not just through playmaking together, but through life. What an odd, beautiful and impossible life it is. Anna D. We Are Mysteries To Ourselves:

TL: The play came from a consideration of my life as I’ve lived it. If you’re a person who’s working at all on your life, on yourself, and I think most of us are (I hope most of us are), you think about where you’ve come from and where you’re going. As I do that I realize I’ve often felt like different people at different times in my life. I look back at my seventeen-year-old self say, and some of that person feels very recognizable to me and some of that person feels very far away from me, feels like a different person entirely. And really that’s the jumping off point for the play: the idea that we are actually different people at different times in our lives.

A conversation with playwright and ensemble member Tracy Letts and artistic producer Jonathan Berry In the weeks leading up to rehearsals, it is customary for Steppenwolf’s Marketing team to gather for a discussion with the artists about their vision for the play. On a cold winter day, we connected by phone with playwright and ensemble member Tracy Letts, calling from sunny California. Here is an excerpt of the conversation, moderated by artistic producer Jonathan Berry.

JB: That’s a very personal premise. TL: Yes but hopefully the play ends up being about whatever you think it’s about as it unfolds for you. I hope it has some universality and you can start to apply some of the play to yourself. JB: Did you know from the beginning that you wanted a number of actors to play Mary Page? And that you would be using non-linear chronology to look at Mary Page at different moments in her life? Or are these things that came through the writing process?

Tracy Letts: I am in LA right now, yeah. JB: Great, you just got a lot of sympathy from the room starting out.

TL: Yeah I’m driving in the UCLA area right now, it’s about 65 degrees. JB: (laughing) That’s great Tracy, that’s just

great. To get started: what was it that sat you down to write this play?

Jonathan Berry: Are you still in LA?

TL: Yes, I always, from the earliest thinking about the play, I always envisioned both of these things. JB: In talking about the design and direction of the piece, Anna has talked about her desire to capture the feeling that you are flipping through a series of

photographs from one woman’s life, and through that exercise your sense of the woman slowly emerges. TL: I think the impression of flipping through photos is true. However, I think it’s also true that there is a person at the center of this and the question that hovers above all this is about identity. What is it that makes us who we are? This is a story of a person unstuck in time and for me that’s kind of the crux of the biscuit here with Mary Page. She’s the one going through those photos; she’s the one who’s flipping through her life asking, “Who am I?” “What makes me this way?” Another way of talking about the play is that Mary Page is, in a sense, looking at a mirror and seeing these different versions of herself. JB: We have talked about the play as a series of moments both mundane and pivotal in her life, and those everyday moments, interestingly, pique our curiosity about Mary Page by what they don’t reveal. They add to a sense of mystery. How did you find that balance between the mundane and pivotal? TL: My original conception was that the play would always be pretty spare but as always, you over write a little bit and then pull back to find that balance. The sense of mystery is important. There’s always a question mark never far away from her. While Mary Page is a mystery to us she is also somewhat of a mystery to herself… as we are mysteries to ourselves.

In Mary Page Marlowe we become acquainted with the title character at different points in her life. We asked a few of the actresses playing Mary Page to reflect on their own lives, asking “is there a version of yourself that feels unrecognizable to the person you are today?”

Annie Munch

Once I found a diary I'd kept during a vacation when I was probably 7 or 8. I had zero recollection of writing about the trip, and yet here it was—it was so detailed and had little pictures and everything (and I was not a diary-keeping kid). It seemed so out of character, but it made me wonder how much of what I think I remember is because it was important to me at the time, and how much is because it fits how I see myself now.

Many young girls face some sort of fear heading into their teenage years. Often times it is social, physical, or emotional. Mine came in the form of gymnastics. Until I was 9 years old, all I wanted to become was an Olympic gymnast. Then, one of my teammates broke her arm practicing a fairly simple skill. I was faced with the reality that the skills I was doing in gymnastics could be extremely dangerous. This realization never left me and although I continued gymnastics, my dreams changed. The little girl who dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete now seems foreign to the present day version of myself.

I’m 15 here. I could not figure out why I wasn’t happy; why I didn’t like being a cheerleader. It had been my life’s goal. I equated popularity with safety, and employed all the strategies girls of my generation understood to achieve and maintain that. I soon learned I hated all of that. Soon after this photo I quit the squad, faded into the social background, and started a more honest journey to finding out who I am. I’m still on it.

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of

a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 40 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Induction loop in the Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! Both the main and balcony levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with an induction loop, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre – just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
