First let me describe it, the true number is above. It is brown, leather-like cover with gold gilt lettering. The edges on the pages are gold as well. It also has the wonderful thumb indexes that allow you to choose your letter of the alphabet quickly.
I'm trying to replace mine due to Hurricane Rita damages where we had trees in and on our house. I have found that all of the sellers are posting all of the ISBN numbers listed on the page, rather than the true number for the copy that they hold. On Websters page they show 4 ISBN's for this book, unless you are familiar with it, you won't know which you have. Therefore it is confusing to try to find this exact dictionary. The X at the end of the number means it has the thumb indexes.
I bought this new in 1981 when I worked at an Office Supply Store. I knew of Websters reputation and decided to spend a bit more and get a quality dictionary. Currently, I ordered, what I thought was the same book, however when it arrived it was red in color and a standard dictionary. I will demand a photo before I send anyone else my money!
I loved the elegant Cover and the overall look of this book. It is a visually appealing book and one that is made with care.
As to the dictionary itself, I cannot describe what is inside of it, however when I needed conversion charts, measurements and the sort, all I needed was my dictionary. So it not only helped with words as in the spelling or meaning, it also provided a wealth of other information.
As for durability: It held up well during both of our daughters school lives and for my everyday purposes. I contacted Webster and told them that I want this same book, but of course it's been out of print for too long and they don't make one like it. They have a 2003 edition in the brown leather-like cover, however it is not thumb indexed, so I am not interested in that copy.
I only had one page that was wrinkled and that was due to one of our moves. I have photo's which I hope will help me buy the correct copy. If you have this in a Non ex-Library, Non written in, clean copy, please contact me.
If you are able to get your hands on this copy, even though it is older from 1981, I believe that you will be impressed with it.
Thanks for reading and I hope that this helped you out.
Reading this book is difficult, not only due to the voluminous vocabulary, but because the text is rendered in incoherent phrases, among which grammatical sentences are rare. The text is supplemented by occasional illustrations; these are confined to small line drawings rendered in black ink, usually to illustrate an obscure object or animal.
The best feature of this book is its organization. A reader seeking all words beginning with a particular letter will find the page tabs very useful. What's more, although an index to the many terms and concepts is entirely lacking, the reader will have little difficulty finding them in the text itself due to the author's odd predilection for alphabetization. Anyone at a loss for words will find plenty of them here. However, casual readers will be unlikely to find that this book holds their interest beyond the first few pages.
