What are you building, buying, or shooting this month? - May 2024

For handguns, is training at 20 yards + a necessity ? For handguns, is training at 20 yards + a necessity ?
Question

I've read a lot of US people discussing firearms training and it seems the focus is on 7 to 17 yards training (95% of SD scenario), which I agree with.

I've watched a lot of police intervention and SD civilians videos, and it seems the statistic above is very true (5 to 17 yards).

Outside of recreational and competition shooting, would you say distance shooting training with handguns is important ? And if it's important what would be a revelant drill ?

I have $6k to blow on a gun help me choose. I have $6k to blow on a gun help me choose.

I was recently admitted to med school so I resigned from my job, which means I probably won’t be buying myself any guns or other fun things for the next 4ish years. My wife gave me $6k to (in her words) blow on a fancy gun. I was thinking maybe one of the SIG ag 55x series guns or maybe a nice 2011?

My firearm needs are met and I already have nods and thermal etc. Just looking for a “Gucci” gun that serves no purpose.

Edit: I literally have a pallet of 9mm and more 556 than I’ll ever probably need. I’m not buying more ammo.

Sister and I had an argument about guns. Hel0 me explain things to her Sister and I had an argument about guns. Hel0 me explain things to her

I struggle with words and wording, and to be honest am fairly new to firearms as a whole, I did not grow up around them, they were never in the house, so explaining things in the simplest way possible for her to understand would be greatly appreciated.

She thinks it is terrifying that literally anybody that she comes across could be carrying what she deemed a dangerous weapon. I asked her to define that, and she said guns and knives. I then asked shouldn't that make you feel more safe knowing anybody could jump in to help if need be? There are countless good citizens you are not murders, not rapist, not criminals in any way who Carey both of these who would jump in and help you if you needed it. She then said, with exact words, "That's because you are a man, and you don't need to worry about those things, unlike I do. I can't do anything without worrying for my saftey." So I pointed out to her that if she is so worried about these things, then carry your own. Nothing is a better deterrent or crime stopper than pulling your own out, and if they don't back out, just shoot them. Best way to deal with it is to match force or provide a greater force with stopping power.

She would not have any of it, called my argument bullshit, said I was making her pissed off, and left. So I ask you how do I explain it in a way that can actually open her eyes to at the very least not worrying if some random is carrying.

I don’t think I can ever forgive boomers for this I don’t think I can ever forgive boomers for this
Controversial Claim

SPORTERIZED RIFLES.

I cannot begin to describe the utter disdain and rage i feel when I see a store say “we got a ‘insert old and interesting collectible firearm’ in” and when I show up to the store…. THE DAMN THINGS BEEN BUTCHERED INTO A SPORTER!

Krags, 1903’s, kar 98’s the list goes on. These boomers had beautifully made rifles and “duh hur, Imma just lop off this stripped beechwood stock n put some crappy oak stock that makes the gun look ridiculous and drill into the receiver to put my crappy scope rings in, huyuck”

It’s bad enough they bought it for like 2 fucking raspberries and a spent condom back in 1960 whatever and they think somehow today, this now burnt out barreled sporterized monstrosity is worth 1000+$ and say “i know what i got”

Yeah no, you know what you HAD, and what you got now is fucking dementia if you think its worth anywhere near that.

Just kills me to no end how these bastards lived in such a great time to be a firearm owner and just ruined it…

Whatever, rant over.
