Shrewsbury Township man died of gunshot wound to the chest in shooting near I-83, coroner says

Update on Wednesday: An autopsy on Tuesday showed that James Anthony Lynch Sr. died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a news release.

The manner of death is homicide, the release says. The coroner's definition is "death at the hands of another," but it may or may not be determined to be justifiable by law enforcement or a court.

State police did not release any new information Tuesday on the investigation.

The York County Coroner's Office responded to a death after a shooting in Shrewsbury Township on Monday, Coroner Pam Gay said.

State police and the coroner have identified the man who died as 57-year-old James Anthony Lynch Sr. of Shrewsbury Township.

An autopsy is planned for Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, the coroner's office said.

Troopers responded around 11:54 a.m. to the commercial area of Wolfe Road and East Forrest Avenue, just off Interstate 83, for a report of a shooting, according to a news release.

State police say that Lynch and a 51-year-old man, who knew each other, were involved in a verbal altercation at the intersection. Both had firearms.

A single gunshot was fired from inside a vehicle and it struck Lynch, who was outside of the vehicle. He died at the scene despite efforts by EMS to save his life,

The 51-year-old man was interviewed at the York state police barracks and then was released Monday evening, state police said.

Several roads in the area near the Interstate 83/Shrewsbury Township interchange at Exit 4 were closed for the police incident, the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company posted on Facebook. Those roads have since reopened.
