Early life and family[edit]

Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley was born on July 1, 1999, in London, England as Charles Patrick Inigo Armstrong-Jones at the Portland Hospital in London.[2] He is the first child of The Right Honourable David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon (formerly Viscount Linley) and The Honorable Serena Armstrong-Jones, Countess of Snowdon.[1]

He was baptised in 1999 at St James' Palace in the presence of his godparents Lady Bruce Dundas, Nigel Harvey, Nick Powell, Orlando Rock, Rita Konig and Lucinda Cecil. He was named in honour of his cousin once removed Charles III and St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. On his paternal side he is a grandson of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and a great-grandson of George VI. On his maternal side he is a grandson of Charles Stanhope, 12th Earl of Harrington. From 2000 to 2002, he lived with his parents at Kensington Palace in order for the family to be closer to the then ailing Princess Margaret.[2]

Education[edit]

From September 2012, Charles attended Eton College along with his cousin Arthur Chatto.[3] It was later revealed in 2018 that he had become a student at Loughborough University and was studying product design engineering.[4][not in citation given]

Official appearances[edit]

Unlike his sister Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, Charles is not often in the public eye. However he has had a few significant roles within public events such as his appointment to be his grand aunt Elizabeth II's First Page of Honour in 2012. Moreover, he attended a 10 year anniversary service for his grandmother Princess Margaret in 2012.[2] Also in 2012, Charles was present along with his family at a thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.[2]

He was also seen attending the funeral of his late grand aunt Elizabeth II which was held on the 19th of September 2022.

Titles and styles[edit]

Charles was known as The Honorable Charles Armstrong-Jones from his birth until January 2017 when he assumed the title of Viscount Linley as a result of the death of his grandfather Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon.[2] Viscount Linley is a subsidiary title of the Earl of Snowdon, which is currently held by his father David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon, therefore making his the heir apparent to the Earldom of Snowdon. As of 2023 he is 25th in line of succession to the British throne.[5]
