Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"A lot of people would look at it in a negative way, like, 'That guy wasnt very good.' I know I wasn't! But I pitched parts of five years in the big leagues and you don't do that by luck. I played twelve years professionally. I did some things that a lot of guys who were a lot more talented than I was didn't do. I take pride in that. I wear it as a badge of honor, knowing he wasn't very good, but he did some things he wasn't supposed to do." - Dave Johnson (Joe Trezza, Dave Johnson remains cult hero in O's lore, 09/26/2019)

David Wayne Johnson was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1987), Baltimore Orioles (1989-1991), and Detroit Tigers (1993). Dave, whose son Steve Johnson was also a big league pitcher, had a few (5) cups of coffee with the Bucs in '87, but is often remembered for being called-up to Baltimore in August '89, then throwing three complete game victories across his first five starts!

Steve won his first big league game on August 8 (2012), with the 2012 Baltimore Orioles, during his second appearance. Dave won his first big league on August 8 (1989), with the 1989 Baltimore Orioles, during his seventh appearance! Like father, like son.

Did you know that while pitching in the minors, Dave Johnson was also a UPS truck driver? He once described that anecdote during an Orioles Radio Network broadcast, "If people remember me, they remember me as 'God, how did he do that?' Because they just knew. I was a truck driver from Middle River (Md.), who was somehow in the middle of the last NBC Game of the Week! Here is the truck driver pitching against the Blue Jays, trying to win the pennant for the Orioles!' Its so fitting!"

The 1989 Orioles went from "worst to (almost) first" fueled in part by that truck driver who helped his hometown team almost win the American League pennant. The NBC Game of the Week he mentioned (above) occurred during the final series of the 1989 season, in Toronto, the Orioles were one game behind the Blue Jays. Toronto won game one of the series, Pete Harnisch was scheduled to pitch game two, but stepped on a nail walking from the stadium to the hotel after Friday's game! Johnson started the criticial game on 3 days' rest and did not disappoint, throwing seven strong innings, surrending only two-hits, allowing just two runs, and leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. Baltimore lost the game, 4-3, ending their Cinderella season, but a local kid name Dave Johnson became a local legend after those events.
