User Rating:

It's easy to rag on 1987 Topps Baseball. One could likely build a cardboard city with all of the cases, wax boxes and monster boxes filled with unwanted leftovers.

That said, it also has one of the most instantly recognizable designs of all-time. The checklist isn't bad, either.

In addition, 1987 Topps Traded Baseball adds more cards to the flagship series.

1987 Topps Baseball Set Details

1987 Topps Baseball has a 792-card checklist. Subsets include Record Breakers, Future Stars, Turn Back the Clock and All-Stars.

Among the notable rookies are Barry Bonds, Barry Larkin and Rafael Palmeiro. It's worth noting that Bonds was also in the 1986 Topps Traded Baseball box set.

Another card that has commanded a lot of attention in the past is Mark McGwire. To this day, many call it a rookie as his 1985 Topps card pictures him in an Olympic uniform. While there's some debate on the rookie status of Traded sets, the 1987 Topps Mark McGwire is definitely not a rookie card. His first Topps card in an MLB uniform, yes, but not a rookie.

The 1987 Topps Baseball is instantly recognizable for its wood-grain borders. Besides that, it's a very clean design. The box used for the player photo has the top-left corner cut off where a team logo sits inside a circle. The bottom-right corner is similarly cut off giving the rectangular nameplate space to overlap.

Card backs use a mostly yellow and blue theme. The top has the player name, position and card number in a strip. Below that is a large box with complete major and minor league stats as well as, space permitted, a short bio. A bottom strip has the player's vital info.

It's unlikely that 1987 Topps Baseball will ever see a huge price surge as there is such a huge amount of it available. That said, it falls into the category of a cheap thrill for many who might have passed their horde on.  If you can stomach the look and get over the nightmares of an avalanche of doubles falling on you while you sleep, it's a nice set to flip through. But one set will likely do.

Issued separately as a premium factory set, the 1987 Topps Baseball Tiffany set is very popular.

5 It is the most awesome set they came out with besides 1984 you have to like that set to but these young muscles head wanted it all so that is what they did stupid they had the total package they just didn’t want to wait so thanks for running my rookie cards they ant worth that paper they are wrote on not none of them believe me you can burn all the cards and they still would not be worth anything so let’s start burning it is the only way it will come back but the juice heads are hit Ken Griffey Jr and Frank Thomas Jeff bagwell Greg Maddox people like that are going to be your sellers notlan Ryan will be big but that is it I think they should banned them they didn’t hit a I could hit that many if I was as big as they was come on look at Mark McGuire from his first year to his second year didn’t even look like the same guy they should have tested him right there I think it is the baseball people to they no what was going on

I know that this product was way over produced, I know that this product was rife with errors and I know that the main “rookies” aren’t really rookies. But you know what? I don’t care. I really like the design of these cards. While not as iconic as the 1980, 1983 and 1985 designs, this is the last eye catching design that Topps had for a LONG time (that 1988 set was UGLY). The 90’s designs, other than 1991, were all terrible. It wasn’t until the mid-2000’s that Topps started making nice designs again. This 1987 set is a nice set to look at and has lots of stars and Hall of Famers.

Yeah there is enough of this product to last for eternity but the design of the cards is just so classic you cant help but love them. You can buy entire sets for near nothing or just the cards you want for less than a cup of coffee. This is a simply a collect because you enjoy it type of set.

I give it 5 stars just because I love the 80’s and local for me Tony Gwynn …and all my cards are in pristine condition and the only thing in this condition that I still have from the 80’s.
But sadly when it comes to monetary value it sounds as if I would have been better off had I saved and not chewed the gum that came with each pack of cards.
And maybe should have held onto and kept all those garbage pail kids cards that were so popular in the 80s instead lol

This was the set that made me fall in love with card collecting. I’d been a casual collector until ’87, but ripping open pack after pack hoping there’d be a McGwire rookie inside (yes, I said rookie and I stand by it) was what hooked me. Maybe it’s an ugly set. I couldn’t say. It has always represented my love for collecting baseball cards, so those wood-grain borders will always be a symbol of my love for hobby. And I’ll continue opening packs of ’87 Topps, tossing out the gum-stained card, filling storage boxes with the cards worth little more than the recycling value of cardboard on which they’re printed, hoping to pull yet another McGwire rookie because it’s a thrill each and every time.

I’ll state right up front this was the first set and packs I ever opened as a wide eyed 8 year old so I have a nostalgic bias for this Topps issue. I have always loved the wood grain design like they also did with 1962 Topps. Other than the Barry Bonds or the Tiffany version of the cards they are more or less worthless money wise. Barry Larkin being the only HOFer with a first issue card in the set. Palmerio appears here first as well but his steroid use has sunk his HOF chances beyond hope. The other shame is the 1985 Topps McGwire and the 1986 Topps Traded (Canseco, Bonds, Bo, Clark, Bonilla, Mitchell, Joyner and Kruk)issue took all the rookie card status out of this set. Though that is the greatest trade set of all time in my opinion.
All that said it is a beautiful set with TONS of Hall Of Famers the last cards for Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton along with all the icons of the era Ryan, Schmidt, Ripken, Clemens, Fisk, Gwynn, Boggs, Sandberg, Winfield, Rickey Henderson and dozens more.
Once a year I’ll buy a cello/wax/rack box of these and open them up and it instantly brings me back to the pre steroid era when Canseco, McGwire where young stud sluggers not Juicers. I learned more about the history of the game from this set than every other I have collected combined. If you are going to buy a late 80’s early 90’s “junk era” box for fun it is the best 20 bucks you can spend.

Yeah, I’m a hater. So sue me. I hate this set so much, that I have gone out of my way to get my hands on as many dups as possible, and destroy them. I’ve used some of these cards as kindling throughout the summer one year when I was camping more often than usual. I think it was about ten years ago. 2005ish.

Having said that, I do keep at least one copy of every single card in this set in pristine condition, plus some misprints and errors, despite my hate for the design of the card. Dups, I destroy. And I know my destruction of these cards hardly puts a dent on what is out there. Still, I like to know that perhaps I might be putting some sort of ding, however minor, in the numbers. Plus, it’s fun to destroy a hated product. And this is hardly the only set I do this with.

Yeah, I’m a hater. :D

And as punishment for my hate, when I become of retirement age in about 30 years from now, these cards will suddenly be worth $10,000 / piece. :D
