Ty Lockwood, a 4-star tight end out of Thompson Station, Tennessee (Independence), who had been committed to Ohio State for a year, has flipped to the SEC.

Lockwood announced a commitment to Alabama, as the 6-foot-4 and 235-pound is the No. 9 tight end in the class of 2023, and No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee, according to the 247Sports Composite. Before his commitment, Alabama had 247Sports’ second-ranked class just behind Notre Dame, but ahead of Ohio State’s. Lockwood is Alabama’s only 2023 tight end commitment. Lockwood has a reported 24 offers.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 225-pounds, appears to possess growth potential to add additional weight to his frame. Two-way player, displays good athleticism on both sides of the ball.

Multi-dimensional athlete with the ability to add value as a traditional Y-TE with his in-line blocking ability, but more equipped to be a factor in the passing game. Position versatile, will line up in the backfield, in-line, and split out. Displays above average in-line blocking ability. Understands leverage, uses his body well at the point of attack to shield defenders. Will need to continue to add strength at the next level to become an above average in-line blocking tight end.

Exhibits excellent versatility as a receiver, has the ability to be moved around all over the field. Plays with good short area quickness and suddenness as a route runner. Moves efficiently, getting in and out of breaks quickly. Demonstrates good route tempo, understanding leverage and how to separate at the top of the route. Possesses above average play speed and offers some run after catch ability. Natural pass catcher with the ability to be a factor in the short to intermediate part of the field. Has an excellent play temperament for the position, understands how to play the game with instincts and awareness.

Projects to a high level multi-year starter at the next level, with the ability to develop into an all-conference player. Will add value on multiple special teams units.
