Also, rankings are considered only for those institutions which have records of graduating at least three batches students at least three batches of students in full time UG or PG programs, where the duration is not less than three years for the UG programs and two years for the PG programs.

The ranking methodology is based on a set of metrics agreed upon by the core committee. These parameters are organized into five broad heads. These in turn have suitable sub-heads with an appropriate weight distribution as given below.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

1. What is the difference between NIRF ranking and accreditation?

NIRF ranking is done every year while accreditation is a 5-year comprehensive assessment of the institution and this is not done by NIRF. The other difference is that accreditation gives an absolute grade but ranking allows students to know how the institution is placed amongst similar institutions.

2. Isn't accreditation enough? What is the need for the NIRF ranking?

Accreditation is done once in five years. Any institute may slip in a year. The performance for each year will be useful for students who would be joining the academic course in a particular year. Hence ranking allows this. Also, only accredited institutions are part of the ranking. Non-accredited ones are too hence, there is a need for both ranking and accreditation. The parameters for both and their use is much different. NIRF ranking is one such step.

3. What is the NIRF Overall Ranking?

While most institutes are known in their respective stream - for example IITs are more known for their engineering programmes and IIMs for their management ones. However, the IITs also offer MBA programmes that are equally good in addition to science programmes too. Not just that, the overall performance on all parameters irrespective of the stream allows any student to know which are the top institutes of the country.  This is the basis for the overall ranking of NIRF.

4. Isn't every institute part of the overall NIRF ranking?

No. The institutes apply for the categories and they are picked accordingly. The committee doesn't put every applicant in the overall category as the parameters and eligibility requirements are much different.

5. Can an institute which has bad accreditation get a good NIRF ranking?

Yes, its possible as an institute may do well in an effort to improve after its accreditation has gone bad. Since the NIRF ranking is done every year, there may be chances that the institute may get a good ranking.

6. How should students use the NIRF overall ranking?

Students can just check the ranking and know whether they should join or not. The NIRF rank is just an indicator to show that the institute is good on so many parameters as specified. So factors like fees, placements, reserach, infrastructure etc do play a role.
