Die Filme der COEN-Brüder sind immer etwas speziell, sie sind immer ein wenig „schräg“, ihre Charaktere oftmals sehr geheimnisvoll. Sie unterlegen ihre Geschichten mit sehr tristen und kalten Bildern, auf diese Weise erzeugen sie eine etwas düstere Grundstimmung. Die Farben sind blass, einfach irgendwie ungemütlich, dazu kommt noch, dass sie auch vor brutalen und grausamen Szenen nicht zurückschrecken. Auch „Miller's Crossing“ weist alle diese Merkmale auf.

Der Film spielt während der amerikanischen Prohibition, und erzählt die Geschichte des Ganoven „Tom Reagan“ (Gabriel Byrne), der als Berater für den Mafiaboss „Leo O'Bannon“ (Albert Finney) arbeitet.
Als eines Tages der ehrgeizige Gangster „Johnny Caspar“ (John Polito) bei „Leo“ die Genehmigung zum einem Mord einholen will, empfiehlt ihm „Tom“ dem zuzustimmen. Doch „Leo“ verweigert seine Zustimmung, denn das vermeintliche Opfer „Bernie Bernbaum“ (John Turturro) ist der Bruder von „Leos“ Geliebter „Verna“ (Marcia Gay Harden). „Tom“, der der Meinung ist, dass „Casper“ viel mehr Ärger machen könnte, als „Bernie“ wert ist, ahnt dass „Leos“ Weigerung ein Fehler ist. Vor allem deshalb, weil er weiß, das „Verna“ „Leo“ nur ausnützt, denn er hat selber ein Verhältnis mit ihr.
Als „Leo“ seine Geliebte beschatten lässt, eskaliert die Situation, denn der Beschatter wird ermordet aufgefunden. Für „Leo“ ist klar, dass „Casper“ dahinter steckt und begeht einen folgenschweren Fehler. Er hetzt die korrupte Polizei auf, „Casper“, die daraufhin seine Etablissements hochnimmt. „Leo“ kann nicht ahnen, was er für eine Lawine losgetreten hat …..

„Miller's Crossing“ war ein richtiger Flop an den Kinokassen, was ich persönlich überhaupt nicht verstehen kann. Der Film ist super spannend, die Story wohl durchdacht und akribisch umgesetzt – ganz großes Kino.
Die Darsteller sind auch sehr, sehr gut, allen voran GABRIEL BYRNE, MARCIA GAY HARDEN und ALBERT FINNEY.

Die COEN-Brüder waren der Meinung, dass der Film nur floppte, weil im selben Jahr mit „Good Fellas“ und „Der Pate III“ noch andere hochkarätige Mafiafilme in die Kinos kamen. Kann sein, aber ich glaube eher, dass der Film eben nur ein ganz kleines Publikum anspricht, er ist einfach zu düster und gemächlich gemacht. Wie gesagt, nur meine persönliche Meinung …..

Mein Fazit: „Miller's Crossing“ gehört tatsächlich zu meinen Lieblingsfilmen, ich mag die düstere Grundstimmung, sowie die akribische und detaillierte Erzählweise sehr gerne. Da ist nicht viel mit Action, die COEN-Brüder bauen Spannung alleine durch die Story auf- das machen sie aber sehr gut!
