Mendon, NY (WROC)- Elizabeth Carey is the co-owner of Impact Earth and is helping visitors at the Mendon Carnival learn to recycle.
“It is about education,” said Carey. “It’s amazing how many people walk up and don’t really know what to do with what they have in front of them. We kind of guide them through the process. It’s a lot of fun.”
Impact Earth started doing these so-called “zero waste” events just over a year ago. Festivals hire them to set up bins for recycling, composting, and trash. Steve Shuler runs the Mendon Carnival and likes knowing all the fun won’t fill up the landfill.
“I think around 80% we diverted from landfills last night,” said Shuler. “So it’s a great thing. Plus, it’s the future I think too.”
Eliza Crane is a senior at HFLl high school. After seeing the zero-waste set-up on the carnival’s first night, she decided to pitch in and volunteer.
“It’s really nice because a lot of people have been interested and have been excited to learn about how they can separate it so it’s not all going to the garbage,” said Crane.
The Mendon Carnival is just one of many zero waste events planned for this summer. Another is the Fairport Music and Food Festival.
At the Mendon Carnival they were able to keep 85% of the trash out of the landfills. Impact Earth hopes to someday make all events zero waste.
