The Town of Monroe, in the Southeast corner of Orange County New York, is consisted of three villages: the Village of Monroe, Kiryas Joel, and Harriman. Monroe is a suburban area with scenic mountains and lakes. It was a popular summer vacation spot years ago, before becoming the commuter town that it is today.
The town is named after President James Monroe. The history of Monroe, however, is more closely associated with cheese. The first cheese factory was opened in Monroe in 1873. Around 1918, velveeta and liederkranz cheese were invented at the Monroe Cheese Company. That is why the popular Monroe Cheese Festival is still held annually in the village.
Monroe offers a beautiful living environment. Many homes offer beautiful mountain views, and there are plenty of parks and outdoor activities. It also offers many suburban conveniences, with most of the big box stores you need: Target, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. in Harriman, and the very popular Woodbury Commons for shopping.
Many residents choose to live in Monroe for its convenience and quiet, beautiful locale. The Harriman Metro North Station and commuter buses make commuting to Manhattan viable, and it is less than one hour drive from North Jersey. The Town of Monroe is located approximately 60 miles north of New York City, across the Hudson River. Driving to New York City takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Most of the commute in town passes through NY-17, which connects to I-84 and I-87. Most of the shopping and dining in Monroe are along NY-17.
For commuters to New York City, there is a Metro North train station in Harriman. The train commute to New York City is around 90 minutes, with commuters usually transferring in Hoboken or Secaucus.
There is also a Short Line bus route that connects Harriman to Port Authority in New York City. There is a park and ride in the Village, and there are convenient bus stops close to many developments.
Most of the students in Monroe go to school at the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District. The test scores for the district is among the best in Orange County. The Village of Kiryas Joel runs its own schools district.
Most of the grocery stores and big box stores in town are along NY-17. At the intersection of NY-17 and I-87, you will find the Woodbury Centre and Harriman Commons. Those are large shopping centers with most large stores that you need, including a Walmart Supercenter, Target, BJs, Home Depot, and more.
At the same intersection, you will also find the Woodbury Commons, a popular outlet mall. Not only will you find popular outlet stores like Nike and Calvin Klein, you will also find upscale outlet shops for Saks Fifth, Barneys New York, Prada, etc.
In the center of the Monroe Village, you will find the Crane Park, where residents can go for a lovely jog around the pond. In the village area you will find the court house and other municipal places. There are also several blocks of shops and restaurants around there, and the Monroe 6 Cinema.
There are a range of nature opportunities in Monroe. Parks with lake views can be found around the Mombasha Lake, and the Arrow Park and Lake resort. The Smith's Clove Park has sports fields and nice picnic areas, a dog park, numerous community events, and allows for sledding in the winter.
For those who like to bike to run along a trail, the 15-mile long Heritage Trail starts in Harriman, at the Mary Harriman Park. It connects several towns in Orange County, including Monroe, Chester, and Goshen. The views along the trail include corn fields, lakes, and the various towns. Just a few minutes outside the town, you can hike and enjoy outdoor activities at the Harriman State Park and Schunnemunk Mountain State Park.
Monroe is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Other popular things to do in Orange County include visiting the popular diary and apple farms and wineries nearby. The farms and wineries are very active, and have interesting events and concerts almost every weekend when it is warm.
For something unique, there is the Museum Village. Museum Village is a unique and open-air historical museum in Monroe, which offers visitors the opportunity to explore vignettes of 19th century American life. You can tour the village and its museum, attend its educational events, or enjoy a fun day there especially when they hold interesting events throughout the year.
