Since I had not only purchased the DVD many years ago when I saw this graphic novel (Cowboys & Aliens by Yan Lente, Foley, Lima and Rosenberg) on Amazon I decided to also purchase it. I have to say right off the bat that this graphic novel version was somewhat disappointing.
The graphic novel did not actually follow the movie version. The movie did not have as I recall a political theme. This graphic novel begins by making a political statement, which was as one sided as you can get, as it emphasizes how the American Indians were abused and made slaves by the European settlers.
The rest of this story is about aliens invading the west and want to make slaves of everyone including the Indians.
The Cowboys and Indians get together to defeat the aliens and this made for an enjoyable ending. I found the illustrations were great and in general this was an entertaining graphic novel. I felt generous today and gave it 4 stars in spite of the clearly far left political commentary at the beginning in this book.
Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Season of the Warrior: A poetic tribute to warriors).

Here information on Wikipedia throws light on the Rosenberg title...
The Cowboys and Aliens title matches that of a 1995 16-page ashcan, published by Tom Arvis and Sureshot Comics. In 1998 Platinum Studios trademarked the name, and in 2004, through a separate agreement, negotiated all rights to the title from Arvis, who changed the name of his book to Wayout West.
The graphic novel begins with the War of the Worlds 'Tasmanian' preamble. In the classic H.G. Welles Alien invasion novel the example of the natives of Tasmania demise under European settlers is used as an example to how earthmen would fare under invaders from space. The art is too tight and hard edge for my taste, Horses' anatomy go haywire and scenes of indians on floating horses reflect the naivety of indian cave paintings. The girl with the whip, Yes, Paul Power's version had a girl with a whip, is sufficient eye candy, but seeing East meets West 31 before Rosenberg's effort I cannot score Cowboys and Aliens very high on originality. The last pages are a bit confusing, that's the best way to describe them, and what else confuses me is the remarkable coincidence to what I had seen before. I hope Paul Power lists his graphic novel here so people can judge for themselves.
