This one scene from 'Cool Runnings' perfectly explains the essence of winning and losing

You know what I did last weekend? I celebrated the end of the Olympics by watching “Cool Runnings,” the hilarious movie based off the Jamaican bobsleigh team that captured the hearts of so many during the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Anyway, I hadn’t watched the movie in ages and was utterly blown away by one scene that I had totally forgotten about: This brief, 60 second conversation between Derice Bannock and his coach.

Irv is a disgraced Olympian that was caught cheating. Asked by Bannock why he did it, Irv gives a beautiful answer explaining the mindset that drove him there as Bannock chases a medal of his own.

It’s easy to be flippant about this. To say this is a silly movie that shouldn’t be thought of as anything more, but this moment is so genuinely deep, and powerful, and beautiful.

When we wonder why athletes get driven to break the rules, or to play dirty, or to cover up their own insecurities by hurling insults, we need look no further than the message beneath this 60 second clip.

“A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you’re not enough without it, you’ll never be enough with it.”
