Henry was banned and deposed by Pope Gregory VII (Saint Gregory). Threatened by his own nobles with election of another King of Germany, Henry IV was forced to do penance at Canossa, in Lombardy, Italy in 1077. Henry IV was a victim of his times. He was to reign over the time when the Pope became the master of the Church and would render kings and the Emperor himself as nothing more than figureheads. This was an exciting book to read.

The temporal division of the chapters are a good choice for the subject matter, and the language used by the author is clear and technically right, and can be read by normal (with a good knowledge of the historical context) and specialists people. There are many notes for possible further study.
In the final part I'm upset that is not translate in other language: Henry IV is a key figure in the history of XI and XII centuries, and people like Frederick II cannot be understood without the turning point represented by the evenemential history set out there.
Only criticism: the price is too high. However, thanks Mr. Robinson for your work.
PS: grazie Amazon per la stampa fatta a Torino, senza costringere un povero corriere a correre dall'Irlanda all'Italia per consegnare il libro ;-)
Why not five stars then? Because it is no page-turner. It lacks the great historian`s panache and readability and 'distance'.. Paragraphs are long and unremitting. The author knows everything, but it tends to swamp us rather than refresh us. I have a bit of a conscience writing this, because I too write history books, and have suffered from adverse reviews. But, like me, I hope the author will relish the good bits, and learn from the bad bits. I wish him well.
Sadly, "condensed" is the key word. It is so packed with facts and details that to me - I like to describe myself as a knowledgeable reader, but I am no history professional - it became a prime example of losing the wood for the trees. I don't usually shy away from a bit of meat, so I went in for the fight. But after 80 or so pages, I surrendered, feeling utterly disappointed. For all his knowledge, Mr. Robinson is no storyteller.
