Like many New York City gals, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) loves to shop. The trouble is, she shops so much that she is drowning in debt. <i>"Don't you think it's ironic that Rebecca Bloomwood is advising people on how to handle money."</i><p> <i>Confessions of a Shopaholic</i> has got to be one of the dumbest rom-coms I've ever seen - it's targeted at 12 year old girls after all. But why did I enjoy this so much? There's a lot of crap in this film, and I mean <i>a lot</i>, but the film is saved by its lead star, the wonderful Isla Fisher. With a comedy, you need a good script. If you don't have one, you need a funny actor who can keep the audience interested. This is the case with <i>Confessions of a Shopaholic</i> - Fisher's charm literally saves this film from running out of credit. <u>SUMMARY:</u><p> Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) is a young journalist addicted to shopping. With a $16 thousand credit card debt she grabs a job at a finance magazine run by Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy). Fending off rivals for Luke's affections from a fashion journalist - which is what Rebecca would rather be - and claiming a debt collector is a stalker, are just a few of the many pickles this ditz gets herself into. <u>REVIEW</u><p> Oh, boy. What can I say about this script? Well... it lacks wit. Written by Tracey Jackson and Tim Firth, the screenplay never displays the slightest of witty dialogue. I did chuckle at a few of the lines, but essentially this comedy depends way too much on the behaviour of its characters rather than the dialogue. Based on the <i>Shopaholic</i> series of novels by Sophie Kinsella, the plot is majorly <b>predictable</b>. There aren't any surprises along the course of the movie, and they're are just so many cliché characters that you'd see in almost any rom-com. Though the film tackles a mature theme of debt, it's handled in the most unrealistic way possible. Rebecca is a total caricature - she doesn't feel real in any sense. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it makes this film feel so unconvincing. On the plus side, I did like the message the film tried to convey. It really gives young girls an insight into what it's like to go through debt - it's a horrible thing. I'm gonna even say that this is an important film to see - it definitely made me want to save money. Isla Fisher is <b>adorable</b>. I must admit I have a huge crush on her. She's hilarious, and let's face it - she's hot. Fisher brings so much charm to the role. Like Anna Faris in <i>The House Bunny</i>, she embodies a ditzy character, and actually makes us laugh quite a lot. Her dialogue isn't particularly well written, but she delivers it well, and overall, her acting saved this movie for me. Some of the things Fisher has to do are simply embarrassing, such as a shoddy dance scene, but she puts <i>a lot</i> of effort into making this character work. Most of the time she is goofy and fun, but when the film takes a more serious tone, you feel for her. Hugh Dancy is also charming, though he doesn't share the greatest amount of chemistry with Fisher. On the other hand, Krysten Ritter as Rebecca's best friend Suze works really well with Fisher - the two convincingly play two BFFs. There are other interesting players in support. Joan Cusack and John Goodman are over-the-top and quite sweet as Rebecca's parents, but they don't have a lot of screen time. The same can be said about John Lithgow, who only has a few scenes as the head of the magazine company. P.J. Hogan isn't new to the romantic comedy genre, and has an impressive filmography. <i>Confessions of a Shopaholic</i> is his first feature after <i>Peter Pan</i> in 2003, and it seems like he hasn't put any effort into this project at all. His direction seems to be towards the exaggerated side of comedy, which isn't bad, but there are moments when something more realistic could've been considered instead of focusing on so many over-the-top clichés. Also, this film is rated <b>PG</b>, not PG-13. It's pretty much a kids movie. Young girls will definitely get a kick out of this, as I do think it works for the target audience. The soundtrack is filled with popular pop songs that have titles that fit into the story and characters, but they're are just so many of them that you start to get sick of them. James Newton Howard's score hits all the right beats with the tone of the film - it's sweet and goofy. However, due to all the licensed music, there isn't a lot of original music. The film is shot well on the location of New York City, and the editing is adequate. Overall, <i>Confessions of a Shopaholic</i> is actually quite enjoyable, despite its poor script and direction. It seems as though no effort has been put into this project, and the only person who is trying is Isla Fisher. She's fabulous in this role, and the movie couldn't have worked for me if she wasn't in it. For its target audience, this film is perfect. Nothing of great merit but still an enjoyable feel good comedy that comes at being a shopaholic from a different angle. Entertaining, predictable and attempts to be heartfelt, this film follows the same scripture as almost every other young romantic comedy. Peppered with some big names with acting above the usual standards of the genre, I must say this is definitely not the worst of its type I have seen but still would have to go just a little bit further to be considered anything better than good. Some AMAZING shoes in it though!

Isla Fisher is incredibly charming but her performance just doesn't make up for the lacklustre script where all the laughs seem forced right up until the final act.

Really bad. Was expecting much better than this. It has it's moments but other than that, not really that good and the main actor isn't all that attractive and his acting is terrible.
