Summary

  • The Cloverfield franchise includes three loosely related movies with complex streaming connections, making it difficult to find all three films on a single platform.
  • The original Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane can be streamed on AMC+ and Paramount+, respectively, while The Cloverfield Paradox is exclusively available on Netflix.
  • If you don't want to subscribe to multiple streaming services, you can also rent or buy the movies on various video-on-demand platforms, except for The Cloverfield Paradox, which is only available to buy on DVD.

The Cloverfield franchise includes three movies that are very loosely related, and their streaming connections are as complicated as their in-universe ties. The franchise began in 2008 with Cloverfield, a masterful blend of found footage and Kaiju genres. The limited, on-the-ground perspective of everyday civilians in Cloverfield allows the film to keep the sci-fi elements relatively unexplained while enriching itself with clever details that hint at deeper lore. The unexplored implications of Cloverfield are rife with franchise potential, but the series producers chose not to leverage this potential into a direct Cloverfield sequel (although a bona fide Cloverfield 2 is reportedly on the way).

The two Cloverfield follow-ups, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, are only loosely connected with the original film. The smaller-scale installments take place within the same universe and tell stories that, in the words of franchise producer J.J. Abrams, share “DNA” with Cloverfield’s subversive monster narrative (via EW). They have all seen unconventional marketing campaigns centered around surprise and viral advertising. However, while the movies all take place in the same universe, commercial factors kept them from being released under the same studio. As such, streaming or renting all three Cloverfield movies becomes a somewhat convoluted process, not unlike the manner of connecting the three standalone films.

Where To Stream All 3 Cloverfield Movies

Due to the tumultuous development history of the Cloverfield franchise, it’s impossible to find all three movies under a single streaming outlet. While the original Cloverfield was conceived as a blockbuster at Paramount, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox were initially written as standalone movies under the studio's microbudget production label Insurge, and both films were drafted into the franchise during production. The gamble paid off with 10 Cloverfield Lane, constituting another Cloverfield hit for Paramount, but the late-stage changes harmed The Cloverfield Paradox. As such, the studio offloaded the film onto Netflix, who bought the movie as a streaming exclusive.

Here is a breakdown of where to watch each of the Cloverfield movies:

  • Cloverfield (2008) – AMC+, DirecTV
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) – Paramount+, Pluto TV
  • The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) – Netflix

The Cloverfield movies will probably never be available under a single platform. The significance Netflix places on exclusive titles makes it unlikely that the platform will ever allow The Cloverfield Paradox to be streamed anywhere else. Similarly, Paramount’s focus on their own streaming platform, Paramount+, makes it unlikely that they would give one of their largest active franchises to a major streaming competitor like Netflix. As such, the long-anticipated Cloverfield sequel will almost certainly be released on Paramount+. Nevertheless, the streaming game is risky; if either platform shuts down in the next few years, their competitor will likely seize the opportunity to buy up all the remaining Cloverfield titles.

For those who don’t wish to invest in warring streaming services for the sake of the Cloverfield franchise, the three movies are also available to buy and rent. Numerous video-on-demand services offer Paramount’s Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane. However, Netflix’s exclusivity mission means that The Cloverfield Paradox is not available for online rental or purchase. Nevertheless, the film is available to buy on DVD — a luxury many of Netflix’s streaming exclusives are not afforded.
