Two Days in Dublin Itinerary Help Please

I'll (M40s) be in Dublin in early June with my father-in-law (60s) to see a band at 3Arena. Neither of us have been and there seems to be a lot of good options. I made up an itinerary and wanted to see if it was realistic and/or worthwhile. We're staying at the Shelbourne.

Sunday

  • Land around 9am

  • Check in around 10am. If we can get an early room, relax until lunch at Meltdown or Green Bench. If not grab breakfast at Tang or Bewley's or Beanhive.

  • After eating, walk around Dublin in a rough circle starting at the Little Museum of Dublin and going by Merrion Sq. Park, National Gallery, Trinity College (prob skipping Book of Kells/Long Library), Grafton Street, Molly Malone, George Street Arcade, Dublin Castle/Chester Beatty, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick's/Marsh Library, then either the Teeling Distillery or back to the hotel through Iveagh Gardens. Might stop at Loose Canon, Long Hall, Grogan's or Kehoe's along the way. Prob won't hit all of them, depends on how much energy we have (we kinda old).

  • Dinner at the Winding Stair then walk though Temple Bar to hopefully find a less busy/old man pub, one or more of Mulligan's, The Palace Bar, Bowe's Lounge, Auld Dubliner, Merchant's Arch, Stag's Head, but ending at Darky Kelly's for the music

Monday

  • Breakfast at the hotel then Kilmainham Gaol at 11am (assuming I get tickets)

  • Take a car to L. Mulligan Grocer for lunch

  • Another car to Gravediggers/Glasnevin Cemetery (can't eat here unfortunately since no food on Mondays)

  • Back to the hotel

  • Pre-dinner drinks at O'Donoghue's and/or Toner's near the hotel

  • Dinner at Matt the Thresher

  • Concert at 3Arena

Tuesday

  • On to London for another band

I'm mostly thinking I might have planned too much for Day 1 but since we're just walking around we can skip whatever and head back to the hotel at any point. I don't think we'll bother with the Guinness tour since I've read it's very crowded and a little underwhelming.

Also not sure about the dining options. A lot of the best reviewed places are closed on Sunday and/or Monday (Variety Jones, Spitalfields, Uno Mas, Fumbally, etc.). It would be nice to hit something traditional for dinner one night and something more modern the next, as long as it's good. Etto and Note were also under consideration instead of the Winding Stair or Matt the Thresher. Steakhouses/Indian are out at FIL's request, and we'll get some Chinese in London. Any dining opinions here would be appreciated.

Anything I missed (another museum? a better pub?) that I can add or switch in? It would have been nice to hit the coast but we won't have the time or energy I think. FIL loves talking to people so anything along those lines is great.

Thank you!

Matt the Thresher is shit.  Go to Etto if you can get a table.

By car do you mean taxi?  Take the LUAS from Kilmainham to Smithfield and walk to Mulligan’s.  Save time, money and blood pressure sitting in traffic for no good reason.

Pop your head into Cobblestones, might be a trad session on.

Matt the Thresher is shit.

This is why I come to Reddit.

And thanks for the transportation tip. Yeah I figured we could get a taxi but the tram works too.

Ha ha, no worries.  Enjoy the trip!

Is it crazy to sit at the bar at Etto? My FIL love talking to bartenders but I’m not sure it looks like that kind of place

Do you like cocktails? Try the Sidecar at the Westbury for a seat at the bar. They’re top notch in there and will usually be up for a chat. It’s pretty high end but the drinks are great.

You can try it out by all means.  Wouldn’t be my preference.

I don’t think Mulligans is open on Monday for food, I just passed their window recently and I thought it said food from Thursday. One to double check anyway. Try Fish Shop in Smithfield.

The Chester Beatty has a great little cafe, you could stop for a coffee and cake while you’re zipping around on that busy day!

Just a note on eating out in Dublin, you will have to make bookings for the types of places you’re looking at. It’s unlikely you’ll get walk-ins, best to just be prepared.

You're right, Mulligan's is closed on Mondays. That was really going to check some boxes! Fish Shop looks great but FIL hates chips if you can believe it haha. Maybe Oxmantown?

Great sandwiches in Oxmantown! As One is nice too.

Brother Hubbard Capel St isn’t too far away, they do a lovely lunch.

For kilmainham, try boom the tickets now, if you can.

I think they also release them in batches at 9 or so in the morning time.

It's not easy getting tickets.

thanks for the heads up - today's tickets sold out in 2 minutes...
