2016 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior Review

Test drivers say the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe's cabin is among the nicest in the class, with a contemporary design, solid construction and high-end, soft-touch materials. They like its comfortable front seats, intuitive infotainment system and quiet ride, though they're disappointed by its cramped third-row seats and relatively small cargo space.

Scorecard

  • Interior 8.0
  • "Coming off a major redo just last year, the Chevy Tahoe benefits from improvements including a quieter and much higher-quality interior and a third-row seat that folds flat into the floor, a significant convenience feature it's been lacking for years. …" -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, more colors and soft-touch materials form a thoroughly modern dash and center console, and the new MyLink color touchscreen is one of the brightest and most user-friendly infotainment systems we've experienced." -- AutoTrader
  • "This is the best interior treatment we've ever seen in a domestic SUV." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "… the build quality is excellent and the layout thoughtful. The 10-way power adjustable seats are comfortable and everything is right at your fingertips." -- Motor Trend (2015)

Seating

The 2016 Tahoe has seats for eight and comes standard with power-adjustable front seats. A front bench seat that boosts capacity to nine or second-row bucket seats that reduce seating to seven are available. Leather upholstery, a power tilting and telescoping steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats and power-folding second- and third-row seats are available. The Tahoe's front seats provide all-day comfort on lengthy journeys, according to auto journalists. They note that in the LS model, which lacks a telescoping steering wheel, some drivers may struggle to find a good driving position. Reviewers report the second-row bench is roomy and comfortable, but they are disappointed that the optional second-row bucket seats don't slide forward or backward. They agree the third row is cramped and is suitable only for children. The Tahoe has a hushed cabin and excellent outward visibility, some critics write.

  • "Up front, most buyers will find the seats plenty comfortable even on long drives, though the lack of a telescoping steering wheel on the base LS model may make it harder for some drivers to find an optimal seating position. The second row, be it a bench or captain's chairs, is just as comfortable and spacious as you'd expect in such a large vehicle." -- Edmunds
  • "Adults will wish the 2nd-row captain's chairs adjusted forward and back, not just for seatback angle, but that's better than the tiny third row - its poor footroom and legroom make it for kids only." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "With a couple significant caveats, the Chevy Tahoe is an outstanding road-trip companion: quiet and comfortable, this truck eats up miles while occupants enjoy that commanding view of the road that makes SUVs and crossovers so popular." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • "Chevy's sound-deadening efforts have paid off. There's a bit of wind rush from around the A-pillars, but the Tahoe keeps the outside world out as effectively as does a luxury sedan. Tire and road noise are distant." -- Car and Driver (2015)

Interior Features

The 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, five USB ports, HD Radio, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a Wi-Fi hot spot and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. Optional features include a power sunroof, push-button start, navigation, a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a wireless mobile device charging pad, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, active lane-keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, front parking sensors and blind spot monitoring.

The Tahoe's infotainment system is simple to use and set up, according to reviewers, though a few report it responds slowly to some touch inputs. Several test drivers say the center stack controls are easy to reach, and they note that some touch-screen controls are complemented by physical buttons and knobs. However, they add that these buttons can turn simple tasks into multiple-step processes.

  • "The graphics on the central 8-inch display screen are crisp and the menu-based commands are easy to navigate, and this year's new Apple CarPlay smartphone integration system is a cool feature. That said, there's sometimes a noticeable lag in the response time of the MyLink system's touchscreen." -- Edmunds
  • "I'm a big fan of Chevy's MyLink infotainment system, finding it both attractive and very easy to use. Phones synced without any trouble, getting the kids' movie loaded and playing through the included wireless headphones was a no-brainer, and the navigation system got us where we needed to be without fanfare." -- AutoWeek (2015)
  • "From the driver's seat, audio and climate controls are within easy reach. The former consist of tuning and volume knobs with station selection being controlled through the touch screen. As in most such arrangements, this can make some simple procedures a multi-step affair, but we generally found the system to be fairly easy to use and logical in operation." -- Consumer Guide (2015)

Cargo

With 15.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 51.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 94.7 cubic feet with both rear rows folded, the 2016 Tahoe has less cargo capacity than many of its rivals. Critics appreciate that the second- and third-row seats create a flat floor when folded, though some note the third-row seats are placed above the rear axle, which makes the cargo floor very high. A hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "That aforementioned fold-flat third row is a cheat of sorts, as its placement above the solid rear axle raises the cargo floor to an almost absurdly high level. Lifting luggage into the Tahoe is difficult, especially if you're short." -- Edmunds
  • "Less thrilling is the raised cargo floor, designed to accommodate the fold-flat rear seats; it lessens cargo room vertically and increases the lift-over height when loading." -- AutoTrader
  • "While much of the Tahoe's competition has embraced fold-flat seats for more than a decade, this is the first time you don't have to remove this big Chevy's third row to maximize cargo room. The power fold mechanism even works quickly." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
