Editor's Take

Jim Sharifi is the Managing Editor of U.S. News Best Cars.

Every full-size pickup truck on the market is offered in an off-road-ready trim with improved capability. Chevrolet’s example is the 2024 Silverado 1500 ZR2 that I spent time with in Palm Springs, California. I appreciated the Silverado’s comfortable and upscale interior, which was spacious and nicely appointed. The infotainment system was responsive and easy to use, though a tuning knob would have been a nice addition to the radio. The Silverado ZR2 differentiates itself with a unique powertrain, compared to its competitors. A turbodiesel inline-six is under the hood, delivering 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. That engine provides smooth power delivery and a respectable towing capacity, but some competitors offer a lot more excitement. Overall, the Silverado ZR2 is a very good truck, but I’d consider the Ford F-150 Raptor or the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro before committing to its $69,900 MSRP. The Tundra is priced similarly and offers more power, while the Raptor, with its $7,000 price premium, is arguably the most off-road-ready truck in the segment.

Is the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a Good Truck?

Yes, the 2024 Silverado is a good full-size pickup truck. It can tow more than 13,000 pounds, and it has a lineup of engines that range from peppy and fuel-efficient turbocharged and diesel options to more brawny V8s. It's easy to drive thanks to refined maneuverability and an agreeable ride, while plenty of passenger room, modern technology and price-appropriate materials make for a comfortable interior.

There's also the upcoming Silverado EV, which we look at separately.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Dimensions and Weight

  • Length: 17 feet, 7 inches to 20 feet, 2 inches
  • Height: 6 feet, 4 inches to 6 feet, 7 inches
  • Curb weight: 4,410 to 5,550 pounds
  • Gross vehicle weight: 6,700 to 7,300 pounds

Should I Buy the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

In a segment where brand loyalty is often a major buying factor, there aren't any truly bad choices. If you like the Silverado's all-around competence, not counting the availability of impressive off-road features and trims, then it's a good buy. Still, this Chevy doesn't lead the class in any area. The Ford F-150 can tow and haul more than any other full-size truck, and the Ram 1500 has what's often lauded as the swankiest cabin in the class.

For 2024, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard in the base WT trim. Also, the turbodiesel engine is now available in the off-road-oriented ZR2 trim.

Which Is the Best Chevrolet Silverado Model to Buy?

We recommend the LT for its fresher cabin styling and upgraded tech over the base model, which is still fairly well-equipped for a full-size truck. The LT's larger touch screen and digital gauge cluster make it feel more premium and modern, while the locking rear differential makes it more capable. The LED headlights and 17-inch wheels are welcome touches as well.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Versus the Competition

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. Ford F-150

The Ford F-150 challenges for the top spot in our full-size pickup truck rankings, and it's a better truck overall than the Silverado. The F-150 can tow 14,000 pounds, and it has a maximum payload of more than 3,300 pounds. With the Ford, you also get a more upscale cabin and a wider range of engine options, including a thrifty hybrid and the high-performance Raptor and Raptor R models. Both of these trucks have similarly user-friendly infotainment systems and comparable passenger accommodations in their two-row cab styles.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. Ram 1500

The Ram 1500 is a top option in this class thanks in part to its luxurious cabin appointments and posh ride. Even base models are well-appointed, but standard features are lacking. Both of these trucks have similar towing and payload ratings, but if you're buying one for utility, note that the Silverado is available in a single-row, 8-foot bed configuration, while the Ram comes standard with two rows of seats and only smaller bed choices.

Silverado 1500 Performance: A Solid Showing

2024 Silverado 1500 Engine

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado offers four engine choices, and all are very capable. The standard 310-horsepower four-cylinder offers effortless acceleration, aided by a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. A 355-horsepower V8 and a 305-horsepower turbodiesel are more authoritative, and they're joined to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The truck is quickest when outfitted with a 420-horsepower V8 that has impressive muscle for just about any situation.

2024 Silverado 1500 Gas Mileage

With its base engine, the Silverado gets up to about 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. When outfitted with the diesel, estimates are as high as about 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Models with the V8 engines come in at about 16 to 17 mpg in the city and about 20 to 21 mpg on the highway.

2024 Silverado 1500 Ride and Handling

Despite its size, this Chevy drives and handles like a smaller vehicle. It feels composed around turns — with little body roll — and it's easily maneuverable, but there's not much steering response or feedback from the road. Ride quality is mostly comfortable, but large bumps in the road are noticeable, and if you opt for larger wheels, the drive is less refined.

Silverado 1500 Interior: Terrific Tech

2024 Silverado 1500 Interior Quality

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado has a middling cabin quality. Lower trims have a drab design and plenty of hard plastics, while pricier models have a fresher look and nicer materials that help justify their cost. However, it's still a step behind the class leaders in luxury.

2024 Silverado 1500 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

This Chevy's standard 7-inch touch screen operates smoothly and boasts the convenience of wireless smartphone integration. It's easy to learn the menu structure and controls, but techies likely won't be wowed. Higher trims have a sharp 13.4-inch touch screen that's equally as user-friendly but with revamped graphics and a high-end feel.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, a 3.5-inch digital display embedded in an analog gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports and a two-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: a 13.4-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four additional USB ports, satellite radio and a six- or seven-speaker stereo
  • Other available features: dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, proximity keyless entry, remote start and a sunroof

How Many People Does the 2024 Silverado 1500 Seat?

The standard Silverado Regular Cab seats three people on a single bench seat. The Double Cab and Crew Cab both seat up to six, with a second row and either the front bench seat or two bucket seats. The front buckets are comfortable and afford good outward visibility. Rear-seat legroom in the Double Cab is mediocre, but the Crew Cab has ample space to stretch out. You might find the rear seats a little uncomfortable.

2024 Silverado 1500 and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The tether anchors can be hard to find, and you might confuse them for other hardware. Also, the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats.

Which 2024 Silverado 1500 Cab Style Is Right for Me?

Chevrolet offers the Silverado in Regular Cab, Double Cab and Crew Cab body styles. The Regular Cab only has a three-person front bench seat and is only available with lower trims. You should only buy the Regular Cab as a work truck or a fleet vehicle.

Both the Double Cab and Crew Cab have two rows of seats. They hold five or six people, depending on if you have the first-row bench seat or optional front captain's chairs. The Crew Cab is a better choice for hauling back-seat passengers regularly, with wide full-size rear doors and about 8 extra inches of rear legroom over the Double Cab. That model has half-size doors that can make entry and egress tricky, but it still offers adequate rear-seat space.

Which 2024 Silverado 1500 Bed Length Is Right for Me?

There are three bed sizes for the Silverado: a long bed (8 feet), standard bed (6 feet, 6 inches) and short bed (5 feet, 8 inches). Larger boxes have higher payload capacities and make it easier to load large items. The biggest factor in picking a bed may be the cab style you choose. The 8-foot bed only comes with the Regular Cab, while the short bed is only offered with the Crew Cab. The standard bed can be paired with any cab.

Which 2024 Silverado 1500 Model Is Best for Towing and Hauling?

The Silverado can tow up to 13,300 pounds. You get that capacity from Double Cab or Crew Cab models with the turbodiesel engine and rear-wheel drive. Other configurations that can tow at least 13,000 pounds include models with the 6.2-liter V8 and four-wheel-drive diesel models. Note that you'll also need to get the Max Trailering package to realize those capabilities. When properly equipped, models with the 5.3-liter V8 can tow more than 11,000 pounds, while many models with the base turbocharged engine can tow more than 9,000 pounds.

The Silverado has a maximum payload of 2,260 pounds, achieved by the Regular Cab with the base engine, rear-wheel drive and either the standard bed or the long bed. In general, payload capacity decreases with larger cabs, with four-wheel drive and with more powerful engines.

Which 2024 Silverado 1500 Model Is Best for Off-Roading?

The Silverado ZR2 is the best off-roader of the lineup thanks to its 2-inch suspension lift, locking differentials, multiple skid plates, mud-rated tires, high-performance suspension components and two-speed transfer case. It also has an impressive 11.2 inches of ground clearance. The optional Bison package for the ZR2 takes things a step further with stamped steel bumpers, multiple heavy-duty skid plates and deeper approach and departure angles.

The Trail Boss trims are a good pick for solid off-roading ability on a budget, boasting most of the ZR2's equipment but costing many thousands of dollars less. If you like any of the other trims for their features but still want some capability, consider adding the widely available Z71 package, which comes with a locking rear differential, skid plates, all-terrain tires and a two-speed transfer case.

  • "The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 stays true to its old-school roots, and the latest updates to the interior and technology do a lot to help this truck be more competitive against its full-size rivals. But lackluster comfort and value keep it from being a top pick." -- Edmunds
  • "The point of a truck like the 2023 Silverado 1500 is that it can be many things to many people. And it doesn’t drive like the old-school stuff. The Silverado 1500 is no lumbering lump with the dynamics of a mobile home." -- Kelley Blue Book (2023)
