Cultivated Australian accent-speakers unite!
We've got to get rid of that warbly "O"(ooiiaarr) sound that most people here have.
We have to come up with a better name for the accent than calling it “cultivated”. I suggest “metropolitan Australian”.
I dunno, most people from the big cities have "general" Australian accents. The "cultivated" one seems to be overwhelmingly prominent in Adelaide. I grew up there and had English parents, so I had no hope other than to sound like a real posho.
I think some Australian actors, particularly ones with theatre experience, end up with a "cultivated" accent because they have to enunciate every word "properly".
I think it’s a wider net than just actors. Lots of my PMC friends lack what you’d call the stereotypical accent. CNN hires a pretty high number of Australian anchors and their accents sound extremely “neutral” to my ears (though as an Australian I would say that).
The education aspect is interesting, because you have your PMC friends who sound neutral or "cultivated", then you have people like Prof. Peter Singer who has a very "general", verging on "broad", accent.
I'm from a totally working class background, never went to university etc, but I sound like a middle class backpacker from the Home Counties.
