About
This glorious castle is the Scottish home of the British Royal Family. For a few months during the year (usually from April through July), you can explore its grounds, gardens, and exhibitions. Go on one of the waymarked walks or take an audio tour to learn about the area's history. The castle itself is off-limits, save for the ballroom which has been converted into an exhibition space. Before leaving, pop by the cafe for some tea and the gift shop for souvenirs. Explore the estate on a tour of the Royal Deeside, which typically covers all admission fees and transport. – Tripadvisor

- kaztinCodsall, United Kingdom218 contributionsWonderful setting. To visit here has been on my wish list for a long time. Parking was easy and we walked up to the entrance gates. Then there’s another walk to get to the castle itself. We had handheld audio devices used to explain the history of the place which was interesting. It’s a lovely setting and the castle is lovely. But…you only get to see one room inside the castle! Just the ballroom…nothing else! We felt a bit disappointed, but it is a private royal residence, owned by the royal family so I guess that is why, but we would have still liked to see more! The cafe is nice and the grounds are easy to navigate as relatively flat. Would recommend.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2023
- Fiona CDurham, United Kingdom121 contributionsIn the footsteps of the Royal familyWhat a spectacular place! How incredible to walk around the grounds and see the ballroom of this Highland delight. We were welcomed at the gatehouse, we had booked tickets online and got a free handset to enjoy the tour. Walking up to the house the peace and tranquility was very evident, birds were singing and the air so fresh. You are pretty free to roam the grounds at your own pace, and take photos to your hearts' content all except in the ballroom. We were fortunate with the weather, it was dry and that made wandering round so much easier. There is a lot to see so do wear decent shoes. You can even take the dogs, not that we have any. The scenery is stunning and you can even sit by the river which is just so uplifting. The ballroom had a picture exhibition of the Royal family and some clothing which was very interesting, it is a cosy space and must be wonderful to attend balls there. The audio handset which has several languages I believe, has a lot of lovely information and you are directed to which number to press by the map and also there are number points along the way to keep you right. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There is a nice cafe area and gift shop of course and I can recommend the scones!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2023
- Leanne LSunshine Coast, Australia182 contributionsA PrivilageDont go expecting to peak and poke around ballrooms and bedrooms because thats not what you get here. Its a privilege to be on this family site that’s such a beautiful setting. The audio tour gives you rich and helpful insight into points of interest around the grounds and there are additional walks you can do alongside the river or in the woodlands. I loved the collection of royal family images and a few royal uniforms and dresses on display in the ballroom. The decision to buy or not to buy souvenirs and food & drink is entirely up to each individual. Service was great and our hot drinks and cakes very nice. We wanted to stretch out our time onsite so appreciated our musings in the gift shop that still had some of its royal stables feel and the pipers room (food area) where more royal pictures are displayed around the walls. If you go with the right expectations and time to absorb what this special site offers, you wont be disappointed.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2023
- Hipsy S12 contributionsNice to have seen the placeLovely to have a look around. Unfortunately we didnt have long enough to fully appreciate the gardens etc. The ballroom exhibition was excellent. The shop there is very nicely done. Interestingly, the gardens directly around Balmoral House seemed unkempt and very untidy. loads of weeds.... not quite sure what that was about. definitely the most untidy of all castles we have looked at (apart from the derelict ones of course)Visited May 2023Written 20 May 2023
- Vacation255226036711 contributionFantastic dayCouldn't disagree more with the negative reviews on here . Had a wonderful full day at Balmoral. Wouldn't have expected to be given access to all areas in a Royal house hold but enough to be part of the history of this beautiful castle. Everything is well set out with eating and gift shop facilities at the end. Equally the trails around the estate are wonderful. Highly recommend and will return.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 May 2023
- Ann L22 contributionsLovely afternoon walking in the groundsWe just had a great afternoon exploring part of the beautiful Balmoral Estate. We walked up to the Castle, looked at the exhibition in the ballroom, had lunch at the cafe where the food was freshly prepared and tasty. Sandwiches, paninis, scones etc. We then did a 2 hour Rangers Tour with Glenn who was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. These tours are only on Wednesdays and have to be pre booked but the walking can be done independently, a map is provided. The staff were all very helpful. If you don’t do any of the longer walks you may find it a disappointing visit. It seems that changes are being made by the new King and parts of the Castle itself may be open to the public soonVisited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2023
- Anthony H8 contributionsGreat estate to walk in.The car park is right by the main road but at the time of our visit despite paying the machines had run out of tickets so we couldn't display that we had paid. Booked in advance meant no queue despite it being a lovely warm summer Saturday. We were greeted by friendly staff and set on our way with audio guides. We didn't follow the suggested route but chose to explore in our own way but everywhere is clearly signed and easy to find. Catering and toilet facilities were good. Only the ballroom is open to the public so good weather for outside certainly helped us. The grounds are superb and we took some of the longer walks up the hills with views over the grounds and then spent peaceful time by the river. A decent value for money visit and we would happily spend a day walking there again. After the visit we visited the Kirk across the road from the car park as wellVisited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 June 2023
- Raelene aPokolbin, Australia72 contributionsPleasant for a wander but not valued for money.Lovely to walk around grounds however if they are going to charge so much they really should open more rooms. There is only one for show and no photos allowed. Why?? It is only a small display of photos. If the Royals want privacy for the home close it all together...but one room certainly not worth the money.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2023
- KenzUk49 contributionsBalmoral Expedition TourWe booked 6 months ahead on a friends recommendation and weren’t disappointed. Our guide, Gavin, was excellent and shared so much information and local knowledge as he toured us around the estate for just over 2hrs. Bit of a trip of a lifetime experience as it is expensive but for what we enjoyed it was actually good value as included free parking and normal castle tour access with audio guide. Agree with other comments re gift shop as we only bought honey as that was one of the items actually produced on the estate.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 June 2023
- PH15Hong Kong, China676 contributionsNice Ground but Otherwise Could Do BetterSome of the previous reviews were right that it was expensive for the viewing of one room with photo exhibition. The ground itself was very nice. The cafe and the gift shop not too exciting. We went in when the castle itself was near closing in the afternoon and so got cheaper tickets to explore the ground, which never closed. So if strolling around was what you were looking for, getting in at the right time would be a good option.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 July 2023

Loved being able to walk into and around the grounds of the castle. Iconic and Nostalgic. Getting there through the Grampian Mountains and the Cairngorms National Park you appreciate the beauty of the castle in these natural surroundings.
Do not however rely on the Cafeteria / Restaurant if you want effective good service. One young lady on the till very nice polite doing all the work while her colleague faffed about seemingly doing a lot but achieving little to assist in getting the waiting line of customers served.
The poor girl was doing her best to cope and I don’t think should be deemed to be at fault.
20 minutes to serve the 4 people in front of me in the queue! Unacceptable!
Balmoral Version and Mash on the menu. Sold out at 12.30. Apart from scones and other pastries you were left to choose from 5 different Pizzas. Come on! This is Balmoral in the heart of Scotland and a deep connection to the country through the Royal family and all you can serve is PIZZA an Italian dish.
I ordered a chicken pizza for table 5. By the time I had been served my tea having to ask what was decaf vs ordinary and paid (paper cups by the way! Come on Balmoral)…. I reached my table on which sat before my wife a Chorizo Pizza into which my wife was happily tucking unaware I had ordered a chicken Pizza. So retuning was not really an option.
As we finished the last piece along comes happy boy “Table 5 Chicken Pizza”. Sorry we’ve eaten the one you gave us we didn’t order. “Oh nobody’s fault people often give the wrong table number” Hold on we’ve been sitting here for 35 minutes. We ordered a chicken pizza you gave us a Chorizo one. You didn’t check you made the mistake no one else. “ not your fault not my fault nobody’s fault.” And walks away back 10 seconds later do you want this chicken Pizza.
Come on Balmoral has now become our go to phrase for poor or shoddy service.
Spoilt for us our experience of this beautiful Royal Palace.

We had a pleasant couple of hours wondering around the grounds of Balmoral, despite the the cold and rain, it was an enjoyable experience. The grounds are very well kept as you would expect from a royal home, but even in winter it looked well. There are plenty of different trails to explore at your leisure.

We parked up paying £5. My wife and her Australian cousin were delighted to see Charles and Camilla arrive at Crathie Church for Sunday worship. We then walked in the grounds and enjoyed a scone and coffee in the cafe. Staff were friendly and helpful. Prices were reasonable. Coffee served in cardboard cups doesn't do it for me but they were nice cardboard cups...if that makes sense!

Balmoral Castle is a true gem nestled amidst the breathtaking Scottish landscape, and our recent visit was nothing short of wonderful. Steeped in royal history, this iconic estate has been a beloved retreat for the British royal family for generations. From Queen Victoria to the present monarch, Balmoral has served as a cherished haven, offering respite from the rigors of public life.
While there were no tours inside the castle during our visit, the opportunity to roam the estate freely was a privilege in itself. Walking through the meticulously maintained grounds and gardens, it's easy to see why Balmoral holds such a special place in the hearts of the royals. The stunning scenery, with its rolling hills and tranquil lochs, provides a serene backdrop for the castle's grandeur. The Highland cows grazing in the fields only added to the the experience, offering a picturesque glimpse of traditional Scottish countryside life.
The castle itself is a masterpiece of architecture, blending traditional Scottish elements with elegant Victorian design.
Exploring the estate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that surrounds Balmoral. From Queen Victoria's purchase of the estate in 1852 to the present day, Balmoral has been a witness to countless royal moments and milestones.
The gift shop offered a delightful escape, boasting an impressive selection of souvenirs. Among them were exclusive Paddington Bear items unique to Balmoral, which we couldn't resist purchasing for our niece. Additionally, the on-site staff were exceptionally gracious, adding to the overall enjoyment of our time at the estate.
And let's not forget the scones—truly a highlight of my time at Balmoral! These scones where the best we had in 28 days. Served with generous dollops of clotted cream and jelly, they were a delectable treat that lingered in my memory long after my departure.

I have always admired Queen Elizabeth II and love Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Read many books on her and her husband, Philip before visiting to fact check when watching The Crown.
Balmoral truly is beautiful and one may understand better why the Queen loved this family's private residence fondly. It is a huge area and due to time, i couldn't cover all the grounds. Would've loved to see more inside to learn more about her life but it was winter and just to learn on the history on why Prince Albert chose this for Queen Victoria is beautiful.
Don't expect the grandiose and luxe. Despite the size of Balmoral Castle, the simple beauty of Scotland's nature itself is captured in the castle area. The garden is curated by Prince Philip and the team he works with is truly the essence of the late Duke of Edinburgh - practical and with purpose.
The staff shared wonderful warm Scottish hospitality. Would love to be back to visit when the Castle is opened together with the grounds.

We visited knowing that only the castle grounds were open. The parking is £5 for the whole day. There are plenty of walks around the grounds so i suspect you can spend quite a few hours here. Nice to see the castle and go for a stroll. We had a wee bite to eat and a drink in the cafe which was ok as well. Enjoyed our visit.

Castle is close but can still roam around the estate. Nice walk in the village and the woods but way too long, too steep, too slippery, dangerous, need to be careful. I would wait to visit the castle when open, but to walk up to see small pyramid s of Albert's, not worth the hassle.

It is an experience going to His Majesty King Charles III Highland home 🏠. Another thing you only get the ballroom is the only part you can go inside, but this should not stop 🛑 you from going to King 🤴 Charles III’s highland house 🏠. Another the king’s home 🏠 breathtaking grounds. Lastly it is a great 😊 place

Visited back in April with my partner and our best friends when on a break away for my birthday. We spent the majority of the day walking the grounds and visiting the castle. The grounds were absolutely stunning and bonus for us the weather was gorgeous. Beautiful views and photographs. The audio tour that accompanied us on the walk was excellent at providing details of the royal family and the heritage of the castle. Price was excellent for what you get, only slight disappointed was only 1 room inside the castle being open for viewing. Other than that it was a fantastic day, even the drive up was stunning.
Added bonus, the King himself drove past us on the bridge and gave us a wave, I would happily visit again.

We were fortunate that during our stay in Braemar that Balmoral Castle was open to the public. It was free entry and access was to the grounds only. It’s such a beautiful castle and you could understand why it was the queen’s favourite. Stunning architecture and beautiful gardens. Well worth the detour to view. Parking I think was £5.

Not set up for wheelchairs.
Would be best contacting the estate office to discuss.
Karim cottage is all ground level. There aren't any ramps into the main doors though - one step only. There is good space inside with wide doors and corridors and large bathrooms.
Hi can you tell me if when we finish visiting the castle and after having our tea, can we walk to see Prince Albert’s Cairn?
Andrew
Tetbury, UK164 contributions
Yes, you could go finding Cairns. There are quite a few. The Prince Albert memorial is actually a pyramid, with excellent views. All the cairns are good, the other in particular for views is the Purchase Cairn (the first, upon the purchase of the estate). This has a great view down the valley.
The Prince Albert cairn is best approached from the West, longer but easier walk. The Eastern approach is short but steeper.

No, all visits are charged because the Balmoral Estate is run as a business. There is a booking office in the car park during the summer, but we booked online in the autumn.
