44 Priests Will Mark Priestly Silver Jubilees

Thirty-nine priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and five priests of the Diocese of Allentown this month will mark their completion of 25 years in the priesthood. The Philadelphia silver jubilarians are: Rt. Rev. Msgr. William J. Kane, Rt. Rev. Msgr. John J. Sefton, and the Revs. Michael J. Augustyn, Joseph C. Belz, Paul A. Cloeren, Thomas J. Corrigan, John P. Cosgrove, John A. Cullen, Edward'L. Esler, John B. Fee, John B. Fitzpatrick, Joseph E. Fitzpatrick, William H. Flatley, Robert A. Gregg, Thomas F. Golden, Joseph N. Gross, Joseph R. Honorowski, Thomas P. Hopkins, Joseph P. Keeney, Francis W. Kelly, Paul A. Lambarski, John C. Larkin, John B. Ligenza, Paul P. Maloney, John J. Martin, Raymond A. McCullough, James E. Walsh, Richard J. Walsh and Joseph P. Whearty. The five jubilarians from the Diocese of Allentown are: Revs. Joseph C. Gaudinskas, Charles L. McNulty, John J. Nawn, Casimir J. Rakauskas, Michael Romagno. All 44 silver jubilarians were ordained in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence Dennis Cardinal Dougherty on May 22, 1937. Fathers Augustyn, Honorowski and Lambarski studied for the priesthood at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake, Mich.; Father Cullen, at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md.; all the other jubilarians studied at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook. Death has claimed six members of the ordination class of 1937. Two priests of this group lost their lives during World War H—the Rev. Anthony J. Conway as a U. S. Navy chaplain, and the Rev. Dominic F. GiHespie as a U. S. Army chaplain. The Rev. George T. Concannon died March 22, 1960, while principal of the Cardinal Dougherty High School. Other deceased classmates were the Revs. James H. Mahoney, John H. Smith and Charles J. McCluskey, who died suddenly on April 10 this year. Biographical data and information on Masses of thanksgiving and jubilee observances follow:

MSGR. JOHN J. SEFTON The Rt. Rev. J. Sefton, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, 47th st. and Springfield ave., will celebrate his silver jubilee Mass there on Sunday, June 17, at 11 A.M. Born in Philadelphia on August 17, 1911. Msgr. Sefton attended Our Lady of Victory School and West Catholic Boys’ High School before entering St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook, in 1927. He offered his first solemn Mass in Our Lady of Victory Church on May 23, 1937. Msgr. Sefton’s first assignment after ordination was as assistant pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Reading. He also served as assistant pastor of Holy Family, New Philadelphia, 1938-1941; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Doylestown, 19411944 r St. Alice, Stonehurst, 1944-1946. and St. Francis de Sales, Philadelphia, 1946-1957. He served as pastor of Presentation B.V.M. Church, Cheltenham, from 1957 until his appointment last year to St. Francis de Sales. Msgr. Sefton has been executive director of the Catholic Charities Appeal since .1958. He was named a domestic prelate with the title of Right Rev. Monsignor in October, 1959. Officers at the silver jubilee Mass will include the Rev. Robert A. Gregg, deacon, and the Rev. Martin J. Barrett, sub-deacon The sermon will be delivered by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John J. Noone. chancellor of the archdiocese.

MSGR. WILLIAM J. KANE The Rt. Rev. Msgr. William J. Kane, rector of St. Joseph’s-in-the-Hills Retreat House, Malvern, will mark his silver jubilee with a solemn Mass in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul on Thursday, May 17, at 6 P.M. Msgr. Kane’s brother, the Rev. James J. Kane of Scranton, will be deacon of the Mass, the Rev. Joseph C. Dougherty will be sub-deacon. The Rev. John C. Larkin will serve as assistant priest. Bishop George L. Leech of Harrisburg will deliver the jubilee sermon. Msgr. Kane was bom ip Ashley, Pa., on March 14, 1911. He attended St. Leo’s grade and high school there, and entered St. Charles Seminary, Overbraok, in 1927. After three years’ study at the Pontifical Atheneo of the Roman Seminary (Lateran), he returned to Philadelphia and offered his first solemn Mass in St. Leo’s Church, Ashley, on May 23, 1937. He served as professor at Rom4n Catholic High School, 1937-1947; as vice rector of St. Joseph’s-in-the-Hills, 1947-1952; and rector of the retreat house from 1952 until the present. From 1952 to 1957 he was in instructor at Immaculate College, Malvern. REV. M. J. AUGUSTYIf The Rev. Michael J. Augustyn will mark his silver jubilee with a Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, June 3, at 11 A.M. In I the Church of St. Laurentlus.

Memphis and E. Berks sts., where he Is assistant pastor. Assistant priest at the jubilee Mass will be the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Peter J. Klekotka. The Rev. Reynold A. Czarnota will be deacon and the Rev. Walter A. Rajmund, sub-deacon. The Rev. Francis J. Sysol will deliver the sermon. A parish reception will follow the Mass. Father Augustyn was bom in Philadelphia on February 18, 1910. He attended St. Josaphat's School here, St. John Kanty Prep. Erie, Pa., and Villanova University before studying for the priesthood at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake, Mich. After ordination he received his master’s degree in education ftt>m Villanova University. He served as assistant pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church, Chester, from 1937 to 1955, St. John Cantius, 1955-1956, and St. Lauren tis, from 1956 to the pres-: ent. REV. JOSEPH C. BELZ The Rev. Joseph C. Belz was bom in Atlantic City, N. J., on November 29,1911. He attended Our Lady Star of the Sea School there, and St. Columba’s and Incarnation of Our Lord schools ip Philadelphia. After his graduation from St. Joseph's Preparatory School, he entered St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook, in 1929. He celebrated his first solemn Mass in Incarnation' of Our Lord Church on May 23, 1937. Following his ordination Father Belz served as assistant pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Jim Thorpe, 1937-1938: St. Alphonsus, 1938-1939; Our Lady Help of Christians, 1939-1943; Incarnation of Our Lord, 19431954; St. Laurence, Highland Park, 1954- 1960. and St. Andrew, Drexel Hill, from 1960 to the present. Father Belz will offer a silver jubilee Mass of thanksgiving in the Church of St. Andrew, School lane and Mason ave., Drexel Hill, on Sunday, May 6, at 1:15 P.M. The Rev. Arthur P. Elliott will be assistant priest, the Rev. Vincent D. McGartland, deacon, and the Rev. Joseph F. Curtin, subdeacon. The sermon will be preached by the Rev. Joseph L. King. A parish dinner at the Club Del Rio, Havertown, will follow the Mass. REV. PAUL A. CLOEREN The Rev. Paul A. Cloeren will mark the silver jubilee of his ordination with a Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, May 20, at 12:15 P.M. in the Church of St. Carthage, Cedar ave. and

Cobbs Creek pkwy., where he is assistant pastor. The Rev. Paul J. Schierse will be deacon and the Rev. Arthur J. Nace will be subdeacon. The Rev. James J. Marley, pastor of St. Carthage Church, will deliver the sermon. Father Cloeren was bom in Philadelphia on July 13, 1910. He attended Assumption B V.M., Visitation 8.V.M., and St. Malachy’s grammar schools and Northeast Catholic High School before entering St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook, in 1927. He offered his first solemn Mass in Holy Child Church on May 23, 1937. He has served as assistant pastor of the following churches: Annunciation 8.V.M., Shenandoah, 1937-1939; St. Aloysius, Philadelphia, 1939-1942; Holy Cross, - 1942-1953; Holy Angels, 1952-1958; and St. Carthage, 1958 to the present. REV. THOMAS J. CORRIGAN , The Rev. Thomas J. Corrigan, pastor of Our Lady of Grace, Penndel, will offer a solemn Mass of thanksgiving in his parish church on May 27 at 12:15. The Rev. Joseph A. St. Clair will assist as deacon; the Rev. H. Glenn Bennett, sub-deacon. The sermon will be given by the Rev. John J. Dunion.

Father Corrigan will be tendered a parish reception that evening. A native of Philadelphia, Father Corrigan attended Nativity B.V.M. School and St. Joseph’s College High School before entering St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook. His first assignment was to Annunciation' B.V.M. Church, Shenandoah. He wag. named to St. Michael’s, Chester, in 1940; to St. Agatha’s, Philadelphia, in 1945; to St. Benedict’s, Philadelphia, in 1948, and to Holy Child, Philadelphia, in 1957. He was named administrator of Our Lady of Grace, Penndel, in September, 1958, and became pastor of the pariah in January, 1962. REV. JOHN P. COSGROVE The Rev. John P. Cosgrove was bom in Philadelphia on March 9, 1909. He attended Gesu School and Roman Catholic High School, before entering St. Charles Seminary in 1927. He offered his first solemn Masd in the Church of St. Francis Xavier on May 23, 1937. H s first assignment was as chaplain at Philadelphia General Hospital, where he served for two years. He was

professor at St. Thomas More High School, 1939-1940; and assistant pastor of St. Anne’s Church, 1940-1952; St. John the Baptist, 1952-1959; and St. Patrick’s, 1959 to the present. Father Cosgrove will offer a solemn Mass of thanksgiving to mark his silver jubilee of ordination on Sunday, May 6, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Patrick's Church, 20th and Locust sts. The Rev. William E. Pope will be assistant priest, the Rev. Joseph M. Collins, deacon, and the Rev. Paul J. Cahill, sub-deacon. The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. John T. Mitchell. A reception will be held in the parish hall on Thursday May 10, at 8 P.M. REV. JOHN A. CULLEN The Rev. John A. Cullen, who this year marks the silver jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood, was born in Lanslord, Pa., on September 14, 1908. He attended St. Ann’s School there, St. Ann's High School and Lansford High School before entering Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md., in 1929. He celebrated his first solemn Mass in St. Ann’s Church, Lansford, on May 23, 1937. Following ordination, he was appointed assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Oxford. He also served as assistant pastor of SS. Simon and Jude Church, Bethlehem, 1937-1938, and Nativity B.V.M. parish, Media, 1938-1955.

Because of prolonged illness, Father Cullen currently resides at Villa St. Joseph, Darby, where he will celebrate his silver jubilee privately. REV. EDWARD L. EBLER The Rev. Edward L. Esler will celebrate his silver jubilee in the priesthood with a solemn Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, May 20, at 'll A.M. in the Church of St. Joan of Arc, Frankford ave. and Atlantic st., where he is assistant pastor. Assistant priest at the jubilee Mass will be the Rev. Joseph J. Fricker. The Rev. Edward J. Kenney will be deacon and the Rev. Henry S. McNulty, sub-deacon. The Rev. James F. S'mon will deliver the sermon. A reception in the parish hall will be held at 8 P.M. on Tuesday, May 22. Father Esler was born In Colwyn, Del. Co., on November 1, 1911. He attended St. Clement’s parish school and West Catholic Boys’ High School, and prepared for the priesthood at St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook. He offered his first sol-

emn Mass in St. Clement’s Church on May 23, 1937. His first assignment as assistant pastor was to Annunciation B.V.M. Church, Catasauqua, 1937-1942. He also served at St. Richard’s, 19421953; St. Joseph’s, Collingdale, 1953- Our Lady of Lourdes, 1954- and St. Joan of Arc’s. He has two sisters in religion: Sister Marie Celestine, 1.H.M., of Nativity B.V.M. High School. Pottsville, and Sister Josefita Maria, of Denis J. O’Connell High School, Arlington, Va. REV. JOHN B. FEE The Rev. John B. Fee, administrator of St. Philip Neri Church, 2nd and Queen sts., will mark the silver jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood with a solemn Mass of thanksgiving in the parish church on Sunday, May 27, at 10 A.M. The Rev. James F. Muldowney. S.J., will be deacon, and the Rev. William D. Dunn will be sub-deacon. The Rev. Gerald A. McGinley will deliver the sermon. The Mass will also open the Forty Hours devotion in St. Philip’s parish, birthplace of the Forty Hours in the United States 109 years ago. \

Father Fee was bom in Philadelphia on April 16, 1910. He attended St. Francis Xavier School here: Aquinas School, Columbus, Ohio, and Northeast Catholic High School here before entering St. Charles Seminary. He pursued postgraduate studies at Villanova University and the University of Pennsylvania. He offered his- first solemn Mass in the Church of St. Francis Xavier on May 23, 1937. He was professor at St. Thomas More H'gh School, 1937-1942; assistant pastor of St. James Church, 1952-1956; of St. Bernard's, 1956-1958: and St. Bridget’s, 1958-1959. He was named administrator of St. Philip's in 1959, REV. JOHN B. FITZPATRICK The Rev. John B. Fitzpatrick, professor at Roman Catholic High School for 25 years, was born June 17, 1912, in Philadelphia. He attended Our Lady of the Holy Souls School here and Holy Spirit High School, Atlantic City. Father Fitzpatrick offered his first solemn Mass in the Church of St. Rose of Lima on May 23, 1937. He was appointed assistant pastor of King of Peace parish in 1937, and the same year was named to the faculty of Roman Catholic High School. He has resided at Old Ct. Mary’s, St. Edmond’s, St.

Francis of Assisi, and St. Callisjtus parishes. „ He was awarded his master's degree in psychology by Villanova University and his doctorate by the University of Pennsylvania. He heads the English department and guidance program at Roman Catholic. Father Fitzparick will offer a jubilee Mass for the high school faculty and students on Thursday, May 17, at 10:30 A.M. in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. The Rev. Richard J. Walsh will be deacon, and the Rev. Donald F. Siegfried, sub-deacon. The Rev. James T. Dolan, rector of Roman Catholic, will preach. Father Fitzpatrick will also celebrate a solemn Mass in St. Callistus Church on Sunday, May 27, at 11 A M., at which his brother, the Rev. Peter A. Fitzpatrick, will be deacon and the Rev. John E. Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Spring City, will mark his silver jubilee in the priesthood with a Mass of thanksgiving in Sacred Heart Church, Royersford, on Sunday, May 27, at 11A.M. Father Fitzpatrick was bom in Philadelphia, where he attended St. Columba’s School and St. Charles Seminary’, Overbrook. He offered his first solemn Mass in the Church of St. Columba on May 23, 1937. His first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Downingtown, where he remained until 1942. He also served as assistant pastor of St. Katharine of Siena Church, Wayne, 1942-1960. and St. Timothy’s, Philadelphia, 1960-1962. In February of this year he was named pastor of St. Joseph’s, Spring City. REV. WILLIAM H. FLATLEY The Rev. William H. He attended St. Francis of Assisi School, Northeast Catholic High School, and St. Joseph’s College before entering St. Charles Seminary in 1931. He offered his first solemn Mass in St. Francis of Assisi Church on May 23, 1937. He served as assistant pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Ambler, from 1937 to 1939, and at St. Timothy’s parish from 1939 to 1943. Father Hopkins was chosen vice rector of St. Charles Seminary in held this post until 1956, when he was appointed professor of history and English. Father Hopkins will mark the silver jubilee of his ordina-. tion to the priesthood with a Mass in the chapel of St. Charles Seminary on May 22, the actual anniversary date.

Navy, will mark his silver jubilee with a solemn Mass of thanksgiving in the Church of St. Cyril of Alexandria, East Lansdowne, on Wednesday, May 30, at 11 A.M. x Assistant priest will be the Rev. John J. Mulhem. The Very Rev. Donald Hoag, 0.F.M., will be deacon, and the Rev. Richard J. Walsh, sub-deacon. The sermon will be delivered by the. Rev. James Follard, C.P. Dinner at the Alpine Club, Springfield, Del. Co., will be held the same afternoon. Father Kelly attended St. Agatha’s School in Philadelphia and St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook. He offered his first solemn Mass in St. Cyril's Church, East Lansdowne, on May 23,.‘1937. He served as assistant pastor of St. Canicus Church, Mahanoy City, 19371939, and St. Charles, Oakview, 1939-1942. Three months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941, he was commissioned a chaplain in the Navy. Father Kelly served with the

U. S. Marines on Tulagi, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Okinawa before returning to parish work in 1946 as assistant pastor at St. Robert's parish, Chester, and St. Helena’s, Philadelphia. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, Father Kelly returned to the Navy and was appointed chaplain of the famed First Marine Division ID February, 1951. REV. CHARLES L. McNULTY The Rev. Charles L. McNulty, pastor of Mary Queen of Peace Church, Pottsville, was bom in Philadelphia on August 24, 1910. He attended Our Mother of Sorrows and Our Lady of Lourdes schools and West Catholic High School, before entering St. Charles Seminary in 1927. He sang his first solemn Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church on May 23, 1937. A luncheon tendered by the parishioners will follow the Mass at the Bala Golf Club. Father Whearty will also offer a Mass on May 26 at St. Bernard’s Convent, Philadelphia, where his sister. Sister Ann Patrice, S.S.J., is stationed. Father Whearty attended St. Gregory’s School and West Philadelphia Catholic Boys’ High School before entering St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook. His priestly assignments included the following Philadelphia churches: Our Lady of Pompeii, St. Donato, St. Edmond, St. Philip Neri, St. Thomas Aquinas, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Old St. Mary’s, and Our Lady of Victory. He was named to St. Margaret’s, Narberth, in May, 1959.
