Two Korean Films Make The Cannes International Film Festival List

This article is more than 3 years old.

The 73rd International Cannes Film Festival, originally delayed from May of 2020 to the end of June, was eventually cancelled altogether in April of 2020, due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is an official list of films that qualified for screening if the festival had not been cancelled.

This year, two Korean films were selected for the lineup. They are Peninsula, by filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho and Heaven: To The Land of Happiness, directed by Im Sang-soo. Altogether 56 films made the 2020 Official Selection.

Peninsula is the sequel to the 2016 zombie hit Train to Busan, which was also directed by Yeon. The film stars Kang Dong-won, Lee Jung-hyun, and Lee-Re.  The story of Peninsula is set four years after the original zombie attack that takes place in Train To Busan.

Yeon wrote and directed the animated films The King of Pigs and The Fake, plus the 2018 live-action film Psychokinesis.

Heaven: To The Land Of Happiness is the story of two men who meet by chance and take a trip, searching for a taste of happiness. It stars actors Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il. The film features Choi’s first acting role in a few years. The veteran TV and film actor last appeared in the 2017 films Heart Blackened and The Mayor

Park appeared in Bong Joon-ho’s films Memories of Murder and The Host. He was last seen in the historical film The King’s Letters.

Director Im’s last film was Intimate Enemies in 2015. His recent films include The Housemaid and The Taste of Money.

Even though the Cannes International Film Festival has been cancelled, the films that make the list can be branded with the official Cannes 2020 label at other film festivals, if they occur, and also when the films are screened in theaters or digitally. Last year’s film festival winner was Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite, which went on to win multiple international awards, including an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Dozens of film festivals worldwide have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
