Society (1989) - IMDb Always thought this movie had just as good a WTF moment as Sleepaway Camp did, but I never hear anyone talk about this.
Its just a crazy movie. Should be more known than what it is. One of the better 80's horror movies in my opinion.
Back when I wanted to be a special effects artist, this was the movie that introduced me to the work of Screaming Mad George. Great stuff!
I tried to find this movie for years and could never get a hold of it. Finally watched the damn thing on youtube and it was pretty good. Sort of a 80s teen comedy version of a Cronenburg flick.
Wish it would come out on Bluray
Love Society. The new art for the re-release is an original Graham Humphreys piece and it rocks!
Wow. Thanks for drawing my attention to this release and great to hear it's coming out on Blu-Ray. And yup, Graham Humphreys' artwork is always stellar.
I know that Second Sight (who seem to have a very reliable track record; and looking at their upcoming schedule I think they may have just become one of my new favourite DVD companies) are releasing Re-Animator and From Beyond on BR, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they'd give this underrated gem the same treatment.
The only downside is I might have to sell a kidney to afford all this wonderful stuff that's coming out, due to Arrow releasing several Bava movies in HD as well; plus that Zombie Flesh Eaters steelbook is looking might tasty :)
I just watched the trailer and it looks pretty good.
The end of this movie is crazy! Those special effects were great in the (without spoiling anything) 'final' scene.
I'm not a fan of the first hour of the movie, but that last third is magnificently grotesque and creative.
I agree with you. I find it is far too slow for its own good. The final 20 minutes are amazing though. Gordon/Yuzna has created superior films.
Hands down one of my favourite horror movies and one of the most underrated genre films of the late 80s.
An all too rare example of splatter meeting satire, it's hilarious, disturbing and, in parts, jaw-droppingly outrageous.
It's sad to hear that it was shelved for three years before getting a US release though.
I really dug Society and I think the ending is pretty insane but I didn't here about it until last year. A friend of mine recommended it. Maybe it was too crazy for some people and they tried to shelve it.
This movie introduced me to my love/horrified fascination with body horror! I still need to watch the ending between my fingers, haha
Probably for the same reason everything from Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon is never talked about. Perpetually in the shadow of Re-Animator, every film they'll ever make.
SO what's the ending?
This is a great movie that fell under the radar. A must see IMHO, especially the last 30 minutes or so fo the movie really, REALLY, messes with the audience.
The ending definitely took me by surprise. I loved it though... haven't seen it in probably about ten years... I think it's time I change that.
The cover reminds a little bit of the movie From Beyond http://thewolfmancometh.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/poster4.jpg
I would describe Society as having WTF moments. It starts reasonably normal, but it gets wild and abstract towards the end. I recommend the film to anyone I know that want a unique viewing experience.
awhile ago someone posted a gif of the final 'shunting' scene. one of the few times r/wtf made me say wtf aloud. i cant find it now though. that's also how i discovered this movie.
also, what happened in sleepaway camp?
I once showed this movie to my mother (we watch a lot of weird shit together), and she just gave me a dirty look and told me to never complain about what she watches ever again.
I own this movie, and I love it. Google Mark Kermode, he's written a bit about it.
I thought it was a well known horror?
