About the author
James Stewart received the M.S. degree from Stanford University and the Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London, he became Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University. His research has been in harmonic analysis and functional analysis. Stewart’s books include a series of high school textbooks as well as a best-selling series of calculus textbooks. He is also co-author, with Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson, of a series of college algebra and precalculus textbooks. Translations of his books include those in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Korean, Chinese, Greek, and Indonesian.
A talented violinst, Stewart was concertmaster of the McMaster Symphony Orchestra for many years and played professionally in the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Having explored connections between music and mathematics, Stewart has given more than 20 talks worldwide on Mathematics and Music and is planning to write a book that attempts to explain why mathematicians tend to be musical.
Stewart was named a Fellow of the Fields Institute in 2002 and was awarded an honorary D.Sc. in 2003 by McMaster University. The library of the Fields Institute is named after him. The James Stewart Mathematics Centre was opened in October, 2003, at McMaster University.

Full and In-Depth treatment: One of the most notable aspects of this book is the extensive treatment it provides on a variety of calculus-related topics. Stewart delves extraordinarily deeply into the topic at hand, ensuring that readers emerge with a firm comprehension of the fundamental ideas. Calculus is broken down into its component parts, from limits and derivatives through integrals and beyond, and each one is explained in detail and with great accuracy.
Style of Writing That Is Easily Comprehended The writing style of James Stewart is one that is easy to understand because it is clear and succinct. He simplifies difficult ideas into language that can be understood by students of all skill levels, which ensures that all pupils are able to acquire the necessary knowledge. Someone like me, who was not a mathematical prodigy, found the explanations of theorems and notions that were broken down step by step to be really beneficial.
A Plentiful Supply of Practice Problems: The book includes a sufficient number of practice problems to assist pupils in consolidating what they have learned. At the end of each subject, you will find a variety of exercises that will test your comprehension and give you the opportunity to put what you've learned into practice. Self-evaluation can be improved significantly by consulting the back of the book, which contains solutions to several of the challenges presented throughout the text.
Calculus is brought to life through the author's incorporation of a vast number of applicable examples drawn from real-world settings. I was able to see the significance of what I was learning thanks to the practical applications of calculus concepts in subjects such as physics, economics, and engineering. This is something that is vital for keeping motivation levels high.
Resources Available on the Companion Website: In addition to the textbook, the companion website provides a variety of helpful resources, such as additional exercises, video explanations, and solutions to a selection of the exercises. When I required further practice or clarity on particular subjects, this online support proved to be a wonderful resource for me.
Solutions to all odd-numbered problems are in the back.
I bought this book so I could help my daughter with her college Adv. Calculus class. I can review the material, do the problems and then we discuss over Skype. I use an external camera with Skype to illustrate concepts and help her understand the key ideas.
