James Stewart received the M.S. degree from Stanford University and the Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London, he became Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University. His research has been in harmonic analysis and functional analysis. Stewart’s books include a series of high school textbooks as well as a best-selling series of calculus textbooks. He is also co-author, with Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson, of a series of college algebra and precalculus textbooks. Translations of his books include those in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Korean, Chinese, Greek, and Indonesian.

A talented violinst, Stewart was concertmaster of the McMaster Symphony Orchestra for many years and played professionally in the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Having explored connections between music and mathematics, Stewart has given more than 20 talks worldwide on Mathematics and Music and is planning to write a book that attempts to explain why mathematicians tend to be musical.

Stewart was named a Fellow of the Fields Institute in 2002 and was awarded an honorary D.Sc. in 2003 by McMaster University. The library of the Fields Institute is named after him. The James Stewart Mathematics Centre was opened in October, 2003, at McMaster University.

Looks Brand New!
I rented the textbook from Cengage Learning, Inc. and honestly the book looks brand new. It doesn't look like anyone has even opened the book. I had thought the book was going to be paperback, but I guess I don't really remember seeing anything saying that it was going to be, I just saw the tab on the top next to the hardcover. That is the only downside to this rental because it is a rather large book and I'm on a rather large campus, so I know it won't be fun hauling this book around with my other textbooks.

I just finished my calculus class using "Calculus: Early Transcendentals" by James Stewart, and I can say without a doubt that this textbook is an extremely helpful resource for students who are researching this topic. Throughout the entirety of my voyage through calculus, the book was an indispensable companion, and I couldn't have wished for a greater guide.

Full and In-Depth treatment: One of the most notable aspects of this book is the extensive treatment it provides on a variety of calculus-related topics. Stewart delves extraordinarily deeply into the topic at hand, ensuring that readers emerge with a firm comprehension of the fundamental ideas. Calculus is broken down into its component parts, from limits and derivatives through integrals and beyond, and each one is explained in detail and with great accuracy.

Style of Writing That Is Easily Comprehended The writing style of James Stewart is one that is easy to understand because it is clear and succinct. He simplifies difficult ideas into language that can be understood by students of all skill levels, which ensures that all pupils are able to acquire the necessary knowledge. Someone like me, who was not a mathematical prodigy, found the explanations of theorems and notions that were broken down step by step to be really beneficial.

A Plentiful Supply of Practice Problems: The book includes a sufficient number of practice problems to assist pupils in consolidating what they have learned. At the end of each subject, you will find a variety of exercises that will test your comprehension and give you the opportunity to put what you've learned into practice. Self-evaluation can be improved significantly by consulting the back of the book, which contains solutions to several of the challenges presented throughout the text.

Calculus is brought to life through the author's incorporation of a vast number of applicable examples drawn from real-world settings. I was able to see the significance of what I was learning thanks to the practical applications of calculus concepts in subjects such as physics, economics, and engineering. This is something that is vital for keeping motivation levels high.

Resources Available on the Companion Website: In addition to the textbook, the companion website provides a variety of helpful resources, such as additional exercises, video explanations, and solutions to a selection of the exercises. When I required further practice or clarity on particular subjects, this online support proved to be a wonderful resource for me.

My kid like this book a lot, because of a lot of practice questions. Yep I got a weird high school kid wanting this book as birthday present. Can't afford new version but used one surprisingly look great! This binder version is the best so my kid took with her on trips a few pages instead of the entire "phone book" size book. So far she doesn't seem to need answer keys. I saw many reviews that college kids don't need this official text book but for some reason my kid is the kind that want to work through every page.

This book was an great deal (relatively speaking). It would have cost me around $100 or so to purchase the online access required for my calculus III class. While I was buying textbooks I decided the extra $35 to get a hard copy was worth it. The ebook through webassign leaves a lot to be desired, so it's nice to have a hard copy of the textbook for reference while doing homework assignments. I have seen some reviews that mentioned that the holes were misaligned and would not fit in a 3-ring binder, but both binders I attempted to put this in had no fitment issues (the first binder I tried was not wide enough to hold the whole book, so make sure you get the right size the first time to make it easier on yourself)

I'm not too sure how the whole ISBN 13 works but the ISBN the school gave me to get was: 9781305616691 loose leaf the book I received ISBN is: 978-1-305-27235-4. ISBN for loose leaf. Does not appear to be a problem so far, as long as all homework problems are the same, is all I care about as the professor will be using problems from the book. The book is the correct edition and the right author, the book is as described besides a slight variation in the ISBN. The print year is 2018, maybe that's why the ISBN is different? I'm sure revisions have changed the ISBN. Now I ordered the textbook and got it the next day, that was fantastic. The textbook is actually in excellent condition, I bought used. The only problem I had upon receiving the textbook was a paper also came along with it, the paper had "REFUND" handwritten on it. Someone rented this book from what looks like another company in august and returned it for a refund with this paper in September, maybe dropped the class or wrong book. Nevertheless, that paper stayed with the book and made its way to me. The paper is literally order information, order number, customer name, phone number, address, email. Luckily I am one to shred a paper that has personal information like this. Whose fault is this? I don't know, but quality control for one of the companies needs an upgrade.

This is a very well written and clear text on advanced calculus. I really like how the pages are well laid out without all the clutter that so many textbooks include that I'm sure few students ever read. Topics are well explained, key points clearly identified and highlighted, and illustrated with examples and well thought out figures. Lots of good problems with solutions to odd-numbered.

I bought this book so I could help my daughter with her college Adv. Calculus class. I can review the material, do the problems and then we discuss over Skype. I use an external camera with Skype to illustrate concepts and help her understand the key ideas.
