NAMEKAGON RIVER: Over 150 miles of Washburn County’s trail system maintained by Rolling Hills Snowmobile & ATV Club.
FOR TRAIL CONDITIONS: www.washburncounty.org/tourism
Remember…Riding the trails is a privilege, not a right! Help us keep our trails by respecting the land and the other riders you meet along the way.

www.rollinghillssnowmobileandatv.com
A northern tributary to the St. Croix River, the Namekagon is a 95‐mile long river protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak/canoe/tube enthusiasts. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. It is classified as a Class I‐II rapids. Campsites are numerous along the Namekagon, many of which can only be accessed from the water. Stop into the Namekagon Visitor Center, operated by the National Park Service, to learn more about this true treasure.
TOTOGATIC RIVER: The Totogatic, dedicated in 2009 as a Wild River, is a beautiful, undeveloped river crossing the northern portion of Washburn County. The Totogatic River flows from Bayfield County all the way to Burnett County where it meets up with the Namekagon River, a tributary of the St. Croix River. Most of the river is wild and remote, making this river a beautiful path for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. However, some areas are dangerous and not recommended for paddling, please check with area experts prior to paddling the river.
YELLOW RIVER: The Yellow River was called the “River Juane” by early French explorers because of the bright yellow sand on the bottom of Yellow Lake, through which it flows. There is excellent canoeing/kayaking on the Yellow River as it flows out of Spooner Lake in Washburn County, into Burnett County, where it joins the St. Croix River in Danbury. It offers a slow‐to‐moderate current and a few gentle rapids. Access to the Yellow River is available at numerous road crossings and public landings. Wildlife, including the White‐Tailed deer and numerous varieties of waterfowl, are abundant along its shores. photo: Karri Burke

Exploring the area is a great way to get the kids outside on a trail, learning about historical sites, or just having some good old fashioned family time. Some of the fun activities included in the Kids’ Scavenger Hunt are swimming at a local beach, identifying native animals, visiting a museum, taking some laps on the go-cart track and even stopping in to the Washburn County Visitor Center. Be sure to grab your copy of the Kids’ Scavenger Hunt brochure and head out to make some memories while you’re in the area. The best part, once your kiddos have completed five of the fun activities, you can bring them back to the visitor center to pick up their prize!

Fat bike trails bring winter fun It hasn’t taken long for fat biking to become one of the premier sports in the area. The Wild Cat Mountain Bike Trail offers eleven miles of groomed fat bike riding opportunities during the winter months. Using a specially designed groomer created by a local bike enthusiast, the Wild Cat trail is expertly groomed throughout the winter season. Winter is undeniably the best time to ride a fat bike and offers a unique experience to explore the thousands of acres of county land that the Wild Cat trails wind through. If you don’t have your own fat bike yet and want to give it a try, rentals are available at Saw This in Spooner. Be sure to visit washburncounty.org to download your Wild Cat Mountain Bike Trail Map or visit the Washburn County Information Center. See photo: James Netz you on the trails!

Lakes
Washburn County Trout Streams
ww
CLASS I - High quality trout waters that have sufficient natural reproduction to sustain populations of wild trout, at or near carry capacity. Consequently, streams in this category require no stocking of hatchery trout. These streams or stream sections are often small and may contain small or slow-growing trout, especially in the headwaters. There are 5,400 miles of Class 1 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 41% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.
Sawmill Park Primitive Area/ Birchwood Area Canoe Trails: Washburn County has two primitive canoe/kayak routes in the Birchwood area, six miles north of Birchwood. Both routes are in a primitive area with little to no development and provide a unique opportunity for a quiet, back country experience. Many refer to this area as their "mini boundary waters" due to the amount of glacial lakes and the solitude that they find when exploring this little-known gem. The canoe/kayak route areas lie within heavily forested, rolling topography with a high density of small glacial lakes. These lakes are land locked deep soft water lakes with steep banks and wooded shores. Bass and Panfish are abundant. A canoe portage and trail system has been marked to guide canoeists.
CLASS II - Streams in this classification may have some natural reproduction, but not enough to utilize available food and space. Therefore, stocking is required to maintain a desirable sport fishery. These streams have good survival and carryover of adult trout, often producing some fish larger than average size. There are 5,911.6 miles of Class 2 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 45% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage. CLASS III - These waters are marginal trout habitat with no natural reproduction occurring. They require annual stocking of trout to provide trout fishing. Generally, there is no carryover of trout from one year to the next. There are 1,864 miles of Class 3 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 14% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.
Sawmill Lake Primitive Kayak/Canoe Route: This kayak/canoe route begins at the Sawmill Lake campground. The portage trail accesses 9 separate lakes, with most portages less than 100 yards. The lakes along this route are relatively deep, with maximum depths of up to 40 feet. Bass and Panfish are abundant, however many of these lakes are prone to winterkill. Of particular interest is the presence of Green Sunfish. For maps, visit
Loyhead Lake Primitive Canoe Route:
washburncounty.org.
This canoe/kayak route is located 7 miles north of Birchwood. The route begins at Loyhead Lake at the boat landing on the Birchwood Fire Lane. The portage trail accesses 7 separate lakes with most portages less than 200 yards.

Antiques, Art & Local Treasures Abound in Washburn County
Shop
While there’s plenty of fun to be had on the lakes in Washburn County, you won’t want to miss hitting the many unique shops throughout the area. If antiques are what you are looking for, you’ll want to check out the 3,000 square foot antique shop in Shell Lake. Scattered throughout the county, you’ll find several antique shops including a variety in downtown Spooner, a big, red barn on the north end of Spooner and a historic schoolhouse in Earl, all full of great treasures. While you’re out on your antique treasure hunt, you’ll want to pop in to some of the many art galleries as well. From glasswork to woodworking, you’ll find some great galleries along Highway 63 stretching from Barronett to Spooner. photo: Karri Burke

49 Along your path, you’ll find many stores offering a variety of local treasures as well. If you’re looking for anything cranberry, Stone Lake is a great stop to find cranberry goodies. Many of the downtown stores offer a variety of local honey, wild rice, baked goods, maple syrup and so much more. Of special interest as you shop in downtown Spooner, be sure to look up when you walk in the stores! Why? Many of the businesses located in the downtown area have refurbished the original tin ceilings and they are a sight to see. While you’re shopping the downtown area of Shell Lake, be sure to take a peek in the post office and outside the public library where you’ll find two incredible mosaic murals.

Insider tips: Explore the seasons of Washburn County
Extras
SprinG -
Summer -
Fall -
Winter -
As the snow melts, the lakes lose their ice and the leaves begin to bud in the vast forests of Washburn County, you’ll want to get out and enjoy the fresh spring air. Hiking and birdwatching are incredible activities to enjoy during the spring. A few of the favorite trails to hit are the Trego Nature Trail located along the Namekagon River, the Beaver Brook Trail with roughly 2,000 acres and an artesian well, and the Hunt Hill Trails which offer over 10 miles of loops through meadows, past lakes and through forests. For those seeking some water adventure, kayaking the Namekagon River is a great way to get out and enjoy the spring weather.
The lakes sparkle as the summer sun shines down on Washburn County. There are many great ways to explore the lake, but there are some favorites for our visitors. If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend the day on the lake, be sure to rent a pontoon and cruise Long Lake. The lake is 19 miles long and offers many establishments with courtesy docks to stop in for a great waterfront meal. If you’re looking to get a little closer to the water, think about renting a stand-up paddleboard to explore one of the area lakes. There are many great attractions open during the summer including museums, art galleries and even a 500 acre nature reserve that offers educational programming.
From sightseeing train rides for fall color viewing to picking your own fall produce, Washburn County’s fall season is sure to be a delight for you and your loved ones. As the trees turn incredible shades of red, orange and yellow, it’s the perfect time to hit the trails. Hiking is one of the local favorites during the fall when you can truly immerse yourself in the beauty of the changing seasons. Fall is also the perfect time to take a guided horseback ride through the forests and prairies of Washburn County. For ATV enthusiasts, be sure to check out the ATV Scenic Tour to enjoy the fall splendor. Stay up to date on the changing colors and all of the fall activities by visiting our fall color report on washburncounty.org.
As the landscape begins to sparkle with snowflakes and ice, the area begins to gear up for a season of fun! The best part of wintertime in Washburn County is the quiet. Whether you’re out snowshoeing or downtown shopping, you’ll feel like you’re experiencing the best kept secret in the north woods. Over 75 shops and 50 restaurants are open during the winter months. Snowmobiling, fat biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are all great ways to explore the trails this time of year. For upto-date trail reports and information on visiting Washburn County during the winter, visit washburncounty.org.
