Vauxhall Cars Ltd. of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom, now a division of Stellantis, is one of Britain’s oldest motor manufacturers. Until its change in ownership, Vauxhall formed the face of General Motors in England—the Detroit giant having bought it in 1925. Originally a producer of luxury vehicles, Vauxhall went on to develop a remarkably rounded selection of models and styles, especially in the years following World War II: the timeline for this very usable recounting of Vauxhall’s models from that heady era.
This compact, 160-page narrative tells the postwar tale of Vauxhall in chronological order, devoting a chapter of several pages for each model, with color illustrations, including period Vauxhall advertising, that denote the cars’ variations. A comprehensive, Hemmings-style specification box accompanies each description, furnishing easy bites of useful information. The text takes the reader through a series of Chevette and Opel Ascona variants, including commercial vehicles and performance cars that were a heck of a lot more interesting than the grim Chevettes we were stuck with here. An examination of Vauxhalls in competition also forms an integral part of this story. The book is an easily managed and comprehensive look at GM cars that are familiar to us, and yet distant. It’s just the ticket for car-spotting while you screen older episodes of Midsomer Murders.

He came from a place where drag racing on a strip was almost unheard of and with an expanse of ocean separating him from the rest of the sport. That didn’t stop the irrepressible dragster builder and owner, Roland Leong, from following his dream. Rather than being upset when he installed a roller camshaft in her new 1959 Oldsmobile, Leong’s mother instead beamed and helped her son start a hall-of-fame career as a dragster owner, builder, and tuner, turning out a succession of gorgeously finished Hawaiian dragsters and Funny Cars that were driven by the quarter mile’s best - most notably, a very young Don Prudhomme.
Leong was part of drag racing’s foundation during the 1960s and 1970s, and this latest history volume from CarTech lays out his story courtesy of a guy who really knows: the drag historian and author Lou Hart, who last penned a retrospective on Funny Car development. This heavily illustrated, 176-page softcover is a natural follow-up, recounting Leong’s history that got off to a quick start when "The Hawaiian" copped the NHRA Winternationals two years after he first set foot on the U.S. mainland. Personalities across its pages include Keith Black, the great Mike Snively, and Prudhomme himself, who recalls Leong through his foreword. This is a very rich tale of how family, friends, and just plain street smarts helped turn an ordinary guy into one of drag racing’s true icons.

1968 Mustang Brake Valves
Q: Does the 1968 Ford Mustang with power drum brakes use the same distribution block and proportioning valve as the 1968 Mustang with power disc brakes? Thank you for your time.
- Raymond Bernfeld, via email
A: All 1967-’69 Ford cars used the same proportioning valve (Ford # C7OZ-2B091-B), but the distribution blocks were all different. The power drum block was #C8ZZ-2B257-B and the power disc block was #C8ZZ-2B257-A. You can get an inline replacement prop valve by Scott Drake from Summit Racing and many Mustang suppliers, but it looks nothing like the OE Ford valve, which was a sort of an offset tee. Scott Drake also sells proportioning-valve and distribution- block assemblies that are fully functional as replacements but not identical to the Ford set-up. NOS Parts Ltd has an NOS proportioning valve available by the FoMoCo part number, and both distribution blocks are offered separately by West Coast Classic Cougars, if you are doing a period-correct restoration.

Chevy C6500 Steering Gear
Q: I have had no luck locating a current (or original) part number for the steering box on my 1997 Chevy C-6500 truck. On the line sheet attached to the cab, it says NP-40, and stamped into the box is the word METRIC. I have been trying to locate a new or rebuilt unit that is reasonably priced. Since I still work with the truck, I’m hoping not to have my steering box rebuilt since it would put me out of commission for a few days. Any help would be appreciated.
- Dave Pill, via Hemmings.com
A: The GM OE part number was 26002502 and you can purchase both used and rebuilt units from Vander Haag’s Inc. They have several used available from one of their ten salvage locations throughout the Midwest for around $350 with a core trade-in. Their rebuilt gears are around $600. You can also get a rebuilt unit through Haldex, part number RG78133X, which can be ordered from your local NAPA store and most heavy-duty truck suppliers, but their pricing is nearly double that of Vander Haag’s.

Ford Flathead Ignition Parts
Q: Hi, I am chasing a distributor condenser with dual points for my 1932 Ford sedan. It’s powered by a flathead V-8 with a 6-volt system. I have tried Drake, Carpenter, Third Gen, Obsolete Ford, and all the part suppliers here in Australia. Can you help me locate this condenser?
- Peter Liddle, via email
A:The original Ford number was 18-12300-B and is still available by special order from Standard Ignition as # FD-62 or from Echlin as # FA-5. Many flathead enthusiasts have also found the Echlin #IH-200 condenser will serve as a replacement with some adaptation. You should be able to order them from your local auto parts store. If not, Vintage Ignition in Canada has quite a few NOS Ford condensers available by part number. They also stock the dual points (Echlin #CS-46, Ford # 18-12107, Motorcraft #FD-66)

Buick Special Differential Plug
Q: I am trying to find a replacement differential fill plug for a 1962 Buick Special with a limited-slip rear. The one in my car has apparently cracked and needs to be replaced. I have searched online and haven’t found a size listing or one for sale by vehicle. I have a picture of it from the chassis manual that shows it having a square head for removal with an open-end wrench.
- Steve Wiley, via Hemmings.com
A: The original drain plug was either a 1-inch or 3/4-inch pipe thread rather than a bolt thread, which explains the square head for removal. We could not determine the diameter from your photocopy. The hole should be approximately 1-inch in diameter with 14 threads per inch for the ¾-inch plug and 1.3-inches and 8 threads per inch for the 1-inch plug. These plugs are common to many 1958-’80s GM differentials and usually an aluminum or red tag designating “limited slip” was installed using the tag acting as a washer for the plug (though washers are not required on tapered pipe thread). The correct ¾-inch NPT replacement plug is available from Classic Industries, #14315, the correct plug for 1-inch NPT is offered by The Parts Place, #SU-5118Z. In a pinch, you should be able to get them from a plumbing supplier as well although they may not have a square head, both hex head and Allen head plugs will also fit.
