I booked the Auberge du lac experience at Brocket Hall as a 60th birthday treat with an additional overnight stay. I had extremely high expectations, based on the Brocket Hall website and claims of the Melbourne Lodge rooms 'Appointed to the Highest standard', they're not, but more about the rooms later. Readers should note here that the website concentrates on Brocket Hall it self, which is not part of the Auberge experience. there are no tours of the house available, and the rooms in Melbourne Lodge do not match the photos on the website. Our party of 4 arrived on the day before the Auberge experience and despite some bad signage in the grounds (mentioned on TA as far back as 2013) found reception and announced ourself. I was a bit surprised by the casual nature of the 'check in' but we were given our keys and sent off towards Melbourne lodge. The rooms were OK ; stained bedspread in one room no bed spread in the other. disgustingly stained carpet in one room tatty net curtains sagging down on an unsupported wire. Spacious though with a nice outlook over the grounds towards Brocket Hall A massive plus point is the setting. It really is in a lovely part of the country with outstanding views. And we had a lovely first afternoon there with a bottle of Prosecco and sandwiches on the terrace overlooking the lake towards the Auberge Restaurant. The service was really good and apart from the shabby nature of the 'appointed to the highest standard' rooms we were impressed. We had booked into the Watershyppes Restaurant (clubhouse) for our evening meal and this also went really well. We were all more than happy with or food. The attending waiter was really good and as we were the only patrons suggested we might prefer to eat on the upper floor where it was cooler. This was a good suggestion and we were grateful for it. We were all naturally looking forward to the following day which was the 'Auberge experience' day. It didn't start well! I was woken by the gardner digging the flower bed outside the bedroom window at 6am. This might be normal for some people, but I was in one of the most tranquil parts of the country, supposedly celebrating my 60th with a well earned break. In fairness to the gardner he was unaware that there were any residents in the Lodge and apologised profusely, when i went and observed to him that he started work early and he happened to be working right outside my ground floor bedroom window. Great sized windows by the way, sash windows almost to the floor, great for letting in light. We walked down to the restaurant, the weather was perfect so the walk was delightful. I reported the 'gardner' incident to reception, who only made a note of it when I encouraged them to do so. Communication clearly isn't something they hold dear, which is surprising in this day and age. The management teams are obviously behind the times when it comes to team work and communications. We had a great breakfast at the clubhouse, a full english, when well done must be the highlight of any hotel stay when in Britain. As the setting and weather was so good we decided to go for a walk and take in some of the countryside alongside the lake and over the bridge and back past the Auberge restaurant. As we were finishing our walk 'security' came bombing up to us in an electric buggy asking us if we realised we were on private property! WTF it was like the gamekeeper confronting some peasants on his property. i advised him politely we were staying there, which surprised him for some reason, I thought it was common for hotels to have guests walking around. He went on his way, but his attitude and poor interpersonal skills put an unnecesary edge to the day. After going out for the day we returned to find that there was only one room which had a bottle of wine in it, which is part of the Auberge experience. I walked down to reception to report the latest oversight. Casual apology submitted, I pointed out that this was another significant problem, this was met with an attitude of indifference as if it was a massive inconvenience for all concerned. Our table for the Auberge Restaurant was booked for 19:30 and again the weather was perfect. Although those walking in high heals might appreciate the offer of lift in one of the many electric buggies. The manager of the restaurant offered a lift on the way back but having eaten well, a walk was welcome. Once at the Auberge and we had agreed the details of our 'package' i.e. 3 courses from the a la carte menu, our evening meal commenced. I'm pleased and a bit relieved to say that the quality of the food and the service was excellent and lived up to all expectations, I would definitely recommend the restaurant as a 'go to' place. IN CONCLUSION - Brockett Hall seems to be suffering from an identity crisis. Is it a golf course;wedding venue; weekend getaway;or a specialist restaurant. Of course it can be all of these things but judging from the previous comments about recent weddings and other visits to the lodge or restaurant, the standards are low on all off them. maybe a good lads venue for a golfing stay! Whilst the website focuses almost exclusively on images of the hall itself, its only open for weddings, not even a tour for guests staying at Melbourne Lodge, I really feel the management team are not making the most of the main building by restricting access to this amazing building. I've also noticed that the 'Auberge experience' has increased in price to £495 this includes the Auberge taster menu with wine, which is £135 and B&B at Melbourne lodge, which I believe is £185. Also included is a bottle of wine (if it turns up see above) in the room and a food platter on arrival. My advice is, if you must stay, and I understand they are refurbing the Lodge, book the B&B and the restaurant separately and spend the rest on a couple of bottles of wine at the Auberge! Currently Brocket Hall is falling well short of its marketing hype (sympathies to the wedding party who posted before me) - must try harder Brocket Hall.

Not entirely sure how to review this place. The house and settings were gorgeous. The golf facilities and both courses were challenging and had stunning views. Both had difficult greens. The thing that lets this place down is the staff. Not very friendly, a little to curt when you ask for something. When we checked in the lady who gave us the rooms was very short and just pointed in the general direction of our rooms. After golf we had a couple of beers in the bar and enquired if we could have the sunday roast option on the specials board as it was reasonbly priced at £15. We were told they stopped taking orders at 6 PM.....it was 6.01 !!!! Breakfast in the morning was a similar affair where tables who arrived after us got their food, tea, coffee etc ahead of us. One guy on our table gave up after waiting nearly half an hour for a cooked breakfast. The bedrooms also looked somewaht tired, missing grout in the bathrooms, torn curtains and a not so power shower. So overall a mixed bag, golf fantastic, hotel not so.

Booked in one night at Melbourne Lodge as a romantic getaway with my husband with dinner at Auberge du Lac. Dinner was stunning and beautiful setting, but Melbourne Lodge is very old and outdated and in serious need of a spruce up/investment by the owners of this location. The rooms does look very charming when you first walk in, but on closer examination you find that everything is very old and quite musty smelling, cracks in the tile, paint, walls, floors. Beds are extremely uncomfortable, like sleeping on a board and when we turned down the duvet cover it was covered in horrible stains. Pillows flat as a pancake. And then we had guests above us clomping around at midnight and then again at 6am, and you can hear every footstep. Wifi spotty at best. Was quite disappointed actually because the setting is beautiful and serene but the rooms are in sore need of updating.

I came here with 4 friends for afternoon tea. We had booked well in advance and requested one gluten free and one vegetarian. First of all even finding the hall was hard, as the signs seemed to contradict each other (if you are going, use the entrance by Lemsford, even though that tries to direct you to the other entrance). When we were finally here, some of the food was brought out straight away, before we had even ordered drinks. We then had to ask for the rest of the food to be brought out. One of the so called vegetarian sandwiches contained salmon, which is not vegetarian. The catering team should know this and this is not acceptable. The gluten free scones were inedible. We managed to call someone over (not an easy task as generally the staff were no-where to be seen) as my friend wanted a manager to taste one. They were taken away, with no apology. We then waited for nearly half an hour before someone came over, and told her she needed to see the receptionist if she had a complaint. She duly went out to see the receptionist who could not help with this problem. Later still we were visited by Claire (an events manager I think), who said if we left our details with the receptionist she would sort something out. Very vague. Still no apology regarding the scones, no replacements, no offers of money off the bill. We were not visited again by any member of staff- no offers of more hot water for the tea, and not one person asked if everything was OK with our food. Then when we wanted to leave, I ended up having to wander around various rooms as there were no members of staff checking on the room. The receptionist said we needed to pay there, and not at the table. I asked for some boxes to take the rest of the food away, and was told that the butler would sort that. When we came to pay, my friend with the gluten free scones was told she did not have too pay, which of course is correct, but I do not know why we were not told that at the table. Then a squashed pile of tin foil was brought over to the table containing apparently all the left overs. We were clearly all going home to different addresses, as we all paid separately, and I had asked for some boxes, not one box, so we left it. So here are some tips for Brocket Hall: 1- Have proper signs on the way in to the house/hall/ golfing/ car park. 2- If people have to pay at the desk, tell them when they arrive so they don't waste ages waiting for a member of staff to come over. 3- Vegetarians do not eat fish. Do not serve fish to vegetarians. Pescatarians eat fish, but that was not what was booked. 4- If someone asks to see a manager, they should not have to wait for over half an hour to see someone. 5- A member of staff should always come over and ask "is everything OK with your food?". 6- If someone complains and you are going to offer them money off the bill, tell them this instead of sending them to the receptionist and then sending over someone else with a mysterious solution. 7- There should be members of staff around in case a guest has a query/ would like more hot water/ would like to ask for the bill and so on. 8- If people ask for boxes to take food away, generally this means they would like a box each, and they would like to divide it up themselves. Terrible service.

I am going to write a more full review and edit this later. But I wanted to make sure those people who are thinking of booking brocket for a wedding think again.. it's honestly not worth it. I have to give credit initially, the estate itself is a idyllic, tranquil and stunning venue. I'd suggest tough to match in Hertfordshire. However, as with a lot of the other review on brocket hall the staff are completely incompetent. I'm listing a few of the issues below but there are a heap load more. We had our ceremony venue changed three times including 4 days before the wedding. The final time was basically because from their initial advice of the numbers of guests for capacity (58) was wrong, the location only held half the number (30). hilariously they had even done a seating plan for 58! As with all the dealings a curt and frankly rude response there's no other choices and we have to lump it. Our evening buffet they managed to not make enough food, so serve half of the guests didn't get food, there was a queue out of the door. no staff mentioned it on the night and when asked the following week about it, the event coordinators response was it was "my fault for not ordering more food"! (amount ordered was as they advised). The other reply was they "didn't feel it was a problem?" Quite frankly it's really frustrating that you put your faith in the "professionals" and are thoroughly let down. As a side note the Melbourne lodge doesn't have a honeymoon suite as they portray, it's just abnormal double with a river side view (who sees the view on a wedding night?). It also has two single mattresses pushed together.

Afternoon Tea - don't bother! This is over rated for £39.50 and you can have a very nice meal in more luxurious surroundings than here. Bad service and lacks English traditional style more faulty towers!

Attended a wedding at Brocket Hall in July 2006. Wished to express how well run this venue is. We had sandwiches and tea on arrival, drinks on the lawn, canapés and then a sit down 3 course meal followed by a band in a separate room in the lower part of the hotel. Must profess that did not stay the night due to the prices being £300 for a room but as a wedding venue this really is one of the best that I have been to in the area in terms of location, setting, service and general wow factor.

After wanting to go for a while now finally we got a small group of us to stay on these beautiful grounds. It's idyllic in every way, we want on bonfire night and were able to enjoy the estate in all its glory with some fantastic fireworks across the river! The weather certainly helped as the next day we were treated to a beautiful autumn morning with clear skies showing Brocket Hall off to its finest. Having eaten at Auberge before (though not on this occasion) it really is top class food and I couldn't recommend more highly. The only grump from our stay were the rowdy men returning with no respect for anyone else staying in the lodge. They felt it appropriate to have conversations in the corridor till about 1am at least with no idea of decibels. I believe they were spoken to by management although this seemed to add fuel to their fire and they continued to be incredibly rude and arrogant to the staff making my self and other guests uncomfortable. From my understanding and perspective it was dealt with very well by management but what a shame these people felt it necessary to inebriate themselves and then be unable to deal with consequences such as being refused more alcohol (and rightly so). Brocket Hall is in a class of its own and I'm sure it has things to improve on like anywhere but having read other reviews I think it important people come to their own conclusions. It is not a contemporary, modern hotel. It's a step back in time holding on to beauty and class and for me that was perfect! I offer it my full support and 4* (1lost for the loss of sleep) but for the estate itself 5* all around. We will be back!

Could be great, outstanding location just a short journey from central london, and the Hall itself a star of many film and tv appearances. Restaurant overpriced for what it is and staff in general not top quality with golfers being the main guests. I heard many complaints about bar closing early and the breakfast service was dire and really bad. The Management company need a shake up and I understand Marriott are waiting in the wings to operate the place, that would be a huge improvement indeed.

We stayed at the lodge due to attending a wedding near by. Check in was in the golf reception and the receptionist seemed a little put out that we arrived 30 minutes before the allocated check in time. Whilst the lodge is in a beautiful setting the lodge itself is very disappointing. Dusty, dead spiders, stained carpet. The room itself was a decent size but much in need of investment and maintenance. I expected it to be a real 5 star experience but it was far from it. The TV reception was awful and the tea and coffee facilities were basic. Everything in the room had a real old feel and in need of tlc. We requested a cot, however was told there was £20 charge for this (having worked in hotels and travelled extensively I have never heard of being charged for a baby cot!) when paying £180 per next I expected a bit more. No air conditioning or mini bar-which wasn't a problem, but would have been welcomed. Breakfast was included and was served in the golf club, which was pleasant. Surroundings beautiful, and the golf course looked amazing.
