Twitter fans claim Brie Larson had death threats in row over support for Chris Pratt

Several Avengers stars have defended Chris Pratt which has Twitter fans asking ‘where was this support?’ after supposed Brie Larson death threats.

In the world of social media, trends often come and go in a flash. Some topics might trend for a few hours while others may hang around for a full day.

It’s rare to have a story on social media play out over several days but that’s exactly the case on Twitter as the debate over Chris Pratt and his rumoured political leanings are still a huge talking point.

Comments have flooded social media since October 19th claiming that the Avengers and Parks and Rec star is a Donald Trump supporter and that he attends an allegedly “anti-LGBTQ” church.

Some of Chris Pratt’s Marvel co-stars have since come forward in defence of the 41-year-old actor which has prompted Twitter fans to ask ‘where was this support for Brie Larson?’

Chris Pratt controversy

Chris Pratt became the centre of a Twitter controversy on October 19th after E! Online ran a poll to rank Hollywood’s many Chrises.

In response to the vote, fans took to Twitter to explain why they think people shouldn’t vote for Chris Pratt.

The poll was posted shortly after Avengers directors Anthony and Joe Russo announced a fundraising event for Joe Biden with a host of Marvel cast members joining them, although Chris Pratt was not among those attending.

It didn’t take long for speculation to make its way online as Twitter users claimed that Chris Pratt is a supporter of Donald Trump, despite the fact that the Minnesota-born actor has never publically stated his political position on social media.

Chris Pratt also drew criticism for attending an allegedly “anti-LGBTQ church” with fans citing comments made by The Umbrella Academy star Ellen Page.

In response to the backlash, several of Chris Pratt’s Marvel co-stars, including Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana and James Gunn, posted messages of support for him online.

However, fans have since pointed out that no such defence was forthcoming for other Marvel stars, chiefly Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson, who have received years of online abuse and supposed death threats from social media trolls.

The case of Brie Larson

When Brie Larson was announced to be playing Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, there was a huge outcry from a section of fans who didn’t approve of the casting.

Calls from Brie Larson to help increase the diversity in film journalism and critique seemed to be among the reasons why Larson was targeted by trolls according to Vox while others believed Larson was central to a rumoured falling out behind the scenes with Avengers castmates.

What followed were months, if not years, of online abuse and trolling with Twitter fans even claiming that she received death threats.

Following the outpouring of support from members of the MCU’s cast for Chris Pratt, Twitter users have asked why Brie Larson and other female Marvel stars did not receive similar levels of support.

Social media reacts

Twitter has been full of comments from fans asking why Chris Pratt has received such support when there was supposed silence when Brie Larson and the film Captain Marvel came under fire.

However, as this Twitter user points out, War Machine actor Don Cheadle has actually been fighting in Brie Larson’s corner from the start.

Chris Pratt and Brie Larson themselves are yet to comment on social media about the recent events.
