WASHINGTON (WJLA) – The U.S. Capitol police officer who died from injuries sustained during the Jan. 6 riot is being honored in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

On Tuesday night, the remains of Officer Brian Sicknick will arrive at the U.S. Capitol Building around 9 p.m. An hour after the arrival, members of the USCP will have time to honor him in private.

Sicknick died Jan. 7 at an area hospital. Two law enforcement officials said Sicknick was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher. The 42-year-old collapsed at the division office after leaving the riots.

The 12-year department veteran also spent six years in the New Jersey Air National Guard.

When announcing the honor, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said,

"The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol Police force during the violent insurrection against our Capitol helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that the Congress was not diverted from our duty to the Constitution. His sacrifice reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve."

On Wednesday morning, members of Congress will pay their respects before Sicknick is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
