Despite living in Toronto all of my life this was the first movie I have ever seen at TIFF. I got the tickets from my mothers friend and knew nothing about the film or its director beforehand. Turns out there's next to no info online about this film and this screening was the world premiere. The director and the two of the actresses were present to introduce the film and for a Q and A afterward.
Breakup Buddies is a comedy about a former musician in a rut after getting a divorce. His music producer friend takes him on a cross country trip across parts of China in an attempt to get his depressed friend to a better place mentally.…
almost lovable.
if only for the precarious journey maltreated by sometimes senseless and sometimes ho-hum moments. or simply put, it could've been better.
Breakup Buddies is a mainland comedy about a bloke trying to get over his divorce with the help of a mate and a road trip.
Things get fairly silly but not as much as I expected and there’s indeed a lot of more heartfelt character beats too, which makes Breakup Buddies enjoyable despite the somewhat unnecessary two hours running.
Well worth a watch if you want some laugh out loud moments with a surprisingly decent dramatic foundation.
I never thought I'd see a mainland Chinese ripoff of SIDEWAYS, but you see something new every day. Overlong and just not enough laughs, though the audience I saw it with really enjoyed it. Clever subplot adds some depth and there are some great scenes that deserve a more focused film. A disappointment compared to the director and star's previous collaborations.
