An instant New York Times bestseller!

The second gripping novel in the
New York Times bestselling Thursday Murder Club series, soon to be a major motion picture from Steven Spielberg at Amblin Entertainment

“It’s taken a mere two books for Richard Osman to vault into the upper leagues of crime writers
. . . The Man Who Died Twice. . . dives right into joyous fun."
—The New York Times Book Review

Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim—the Thursday Murder Club—are still riding high off their recent real-life murder case and are looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet at Cooper’s Chase, their posh retirement village.

But they are out of luck.

An unexpected visitor—an old pal of Elizabeth’s (or perhaps more than just a pal?)—arrives, desperate for her help. He has been accused of stealing diamonds worth millions from the wrong men and he’s seriously on the lam.

Then, as night follows day, the first body is found. But not the last. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim are up against a ruthless murderer who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can our four friends catch the killer before the killer catches them?  And if they find the diamonds, too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus?  You should never put anything beyond the Thursday Murder Club.

Richard Osman is back with everyone’s favorite mystery-solving quartet, and the second installment of the Thursday Murder Club series is just as clever and warm as the first—an unputdownable, laugh-out-loud pleasure of a read.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2021: Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim—the Thursday Murder Club—get very little time to bask in the glow of solving their first murder case when Douglas, Elizabeth’s ex-husband, pops up with a wild tale that involves being on the run and £20M of uncut diamonds. Faster than you can say “tea and scones” someone is murdered, and the Thursday Murder Club must catch a killer before he eliminates them. There are many reasons to love this series but chief among them is the feisty quartet of elderly volunteer sleuths who work the case from Cooper’s Chase, their posh retirement village. The clever, funny mystery plot and the even funnier dialog (“Stop repeating what I said last, Elizabeth. It’s a terrible habit of yours. That and adultery”) make this a must-read for anyone with even a mild case of Anglophilia. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

Review

Praise for The Man Who Died Twice:

“These septuagenarian sleuths of the Thursday Murder Club don’t miss a beat…”
—People

“It’s taken a mere two books for Richard Osman to vault into the upper leagues of crime writers… The Man Who Died Twice. . . dives right into joyous fun. Osman’s writing reminds me of Anthony Berkeley’s in its mixing of sparkling humor and resonant emotion. . . No wonder readers, myself included, have surrendered to [the Thursday Murder Club members’] abundant charms.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Think of the Thursday Murder Club itself as a senior version of 'The A-Team'. . . Funny, moving and suspenseful. . .  So delicious, even adorable . . A wildly entertaining book.”
—The Washington Post

“[Feels] like a reunion with old friends. Clever, witty, and touching, this thriller has it all.”
Lisa Gardner, #1New York Timesbestselling author of Before She Disappeared

“A thing of joy. Osman has a natural sense of humor that he's able to translate into both character and dialogue.”

Kate Atkinson, #1New York Timesbestselling author of Big Sky

“Osman delivers another must read full of humor and heart. I loved it.”
Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Win

“This book is SO MUCH FUN! Fiendishly clever and brimming with wit on every page,
The Man Who Died Twice is the tonic we all need. Osman just gets better.”
—Shari Lapena, New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

“He’s back and he’s better than ever! By turns moving, hilarious, and brilliantly suspenseful, the novel keeps us flipping pages from start to finish.”
—Jeffery Deaver, #1 international bestselling author of The Final Twist

“Osman’s novels are so much more than just brilliantly engineered mysteries... They're also funny, warm, and big-hearted. He can't possibly write them fast enough to suit me. These books are absolute gold.”
Joe Hill, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman

“Richard Osman’s action-packed second outing with the Thursday Murder Club overflows with wit, friendship, and derring-do, as the eccentric quartet of British crime solvers joins forces from a countryside retirement village. They tussle with the mafia, investigate murders, and, of course, enjoy teatime.”
—The Christian Science Monitor

“The club makes a triumphant return…
The Man Who Died Twice, like its series predecessor, is an unalloyed delight, full of sharp writing, sudden surprises, heart, comedy, sorrow and great banter.”
—Tom Nolan, The Wall Street Journal

“Fun and ingenious … Osman blends humor and pathos while weaving his tangled web of intrigue and deception. This is the perfect book with which to unwind.”
—Malcolm Forbes, Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Osman follows The Thursday Murder Club, his supremely entertaining debut, with an even better second installment. . . A clever, funny mystery peopled with captivating characters that enhance the story at every quirky turn.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“It’s impossible to single out any one feature that makes
The Man Who Died Twice such an absolute treat... Richard Osman creates real magic with his characters. They are frequently laugh-out-loud hilarious but also entirely real and three-dimensional...If possible, this sequel is even better than the Osman’s charmer of a debut, The Thursday Murder Club. This series is both a load of fun and an ode to how the power of friendship is important throughout one’s life but especially during the final stretch. Don’t miss it.”
—BookPage (starred review)

“[
The Man Who Died Twice] captures the spirit of older folks who don't want to be pigeonholed by their age and who capture the charming insouciance of those who've seen a lot. . . the dialogue at a sprightly clip, while the plot itself often gallops. But it is the four very different. . . but utterly endearing members of the club who will leave readers eager for Osman to call the next meeting to order.”
—Booklist

“Riveting. . . The twisty plot, knotty issues of relationships with life partners, and steadfast loyalty among the sleuths provide depth and poignancy. Those who prefer their mysteries with touches of spycraft, humor, and eccentricity will be well pleased.”
—Publishers Weekly

“This slick sequel will leave you buzzing with 'the gentle hum of contentment.'”
—The Times (London)

“If you liked
The Thursday Murder Club, you’re in for a treat, as this sequel is even better.”
Good Housekeeping (UK)

“It’s balm for the soul.”
Daily Express (London)

“It’s an unalloyed pleasure to spend time with Osman’s sparkling, well-observed characters who are also wittily perceptive about our foibles and the quirks of modern life.”
Sunday Express (London)

“Osman’s characters are beautifully drawn, and the result is a novel that’s pure pleasure to read.”
The Observer (London)

“The Man Who Died Twice” (Thursday Murder Club #2) by Richard Osman. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Cozy Mystery. Location: England, in the heart of the Kentish Weald. Time: Present.Head 15 miles out of Fairfield, past an old phone booth, the farm shop and the wooden bus stop, and take a right turn before the bridge. This brings you to a convent repurposed as Cooper’s Chase Retirement Village, home of the Thursday Murder Club: Joyce, former nurse, diary keeper, and expert at blending in; Elizabeth, former secret military (spy? agent?-she’ll never tell); Ibrahim, psychiatrist who still has his files and patient chair; and Ron, former firebrand union activist. These spirited seniors are more complex than you might think, and - criminals beware - they take no prisoners! In book 1, the 4 friends solved the murder of a shady local developer in a collaboration with local Deputy Constable Donna De Freitas and her boss DCI Chris Hudson. Well, Donna and Chris didn’t think of it in quite the same way. Now, in book 2, a mysterious man appears from Elizabeth’s past, Ibrahim is violently mugged, diamonds disappear, crime bosses appear, Joyce wants a dog, Ron disguises himself, and we learn much more about Elizabeth’s time as a spy. Meanwhile DC Donna’s mother is now dating Donna’s boss, Chris, so he plays a bigger, and likable, role.Book 2 is even more charming than book 1, and as full of humor, compassion, and yes, multiple murders. There is no condescension or pity toward senior citizens. It plays against ageist stereotypes, while acknowledging the realities and frailties of old age. The characters are more complex as we get to know them better, and it’s 5 stars from me 🌵📚👩🏼‍🦳.”

This is the second outing of the Thursday Murder Club, a group of septuagenarians who look into cold murder cases for fun. Book #2 in the series is set up for us at the end of Book #1, when Elizabeth - a former spy, we now know - finds a letter slipped under her door from a man who has been long dead -- so she thought.
So starts Book #2 - w/ Elizabeth attempting to contact the supposedly-dead man. Instead, it is her ex-husband and "retired" co-spy, Douglas, who claims to have stolen 20 million pounds in diamonds from a notorious deals-maker for all people criminal, Martin Lomax. Douglas claims that he needs Elizabeth to guard him until he can abscond to Antwerp w/ the diamonds, which are, of course, safely hidden away. Douglas has an MI5 handler, Poppy, keeping an eye on him also. They have both moved into an apartment in Elizabeth's retirement complex, so easy for her to keep an eye out for him. Right?
Wrong. Even though Elizabeth enlists the help of her fellow Club members, things go awry and the bodies start piling up, as they are wont to do around this foursome. One of our foursome runs afoul of a youthful criminal, throwing an extra complication into the situation, and nearly killing them. So, Elizabeth and Club have an ever-more-complicated situation to figure out. We all know they are going to do so, but getting to the solution is so much fun! And of course, they involve their favorite local gendarmes, Donna and Chris, as well as the former thug but all-around-nice-guy, Bogdan. Osman is a talented writer, throwing in wrenches to the plot right and left, and ending each of the short chapters w/ a mini cliff-hanger, so one has to keep reading, no matter how late it is getting!
I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first one, and can't wait for the weather to improve so I can go buy #3 in the series. 5 enjoyable stars!

Loved this book. Well-written plot with very interesting characters. I've read all 4 of his Thursday Murder Club books and hope very much Richard Osman has more coming soon.

This series only gets better. Each main character is developed further, the sleuthing becomes more involved, and I become more attached. I love that the ending manages to surprise me, and I applaud Osman’s ability to evoke genuine emotion from the reader. Although this book functions as a stand-alone novel, it’s best read after the previous book. Highly recommend if a person enjoys British mysteries.

I love these people. They are funny, hilarious and joyful. They make me laugh out loud. When I’m an octogenarian, I want to have an exciting life like them. Some of the storylines seem improbable. But this is a story, it’s fiction.

My friend recommended the first book of the Thursday Murder Club to me. She said "I really miss spending time with them" - which in my eyes is one of the best compliments about a book. After the initial trial, I switched from German to English and am currently reading book 4.
Given the amount of new book flooding the market, I find it hard to find really good reads, but this series is so worth it! Recommend 100%!
