Empire of Man Paperback – February 4, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
Roger Ramius MacClintock was young, handsome, athletic, an excellent dresser, and third in line for the Throne of Man. It probably wasn't too surprising that someone in his position should react by becoming spoiled, self-centered, and petulant. After all, what else did he have to do with his life? Then warships of the Empire of Man's worst rivals force his crippled vessel out of space and Roger is shipwrecked on the planet Marduk, whose jungles are full of deadly predators and barbarian hordes with really bad dispositions. Now all Roger has to do is hike halfway around the entire planet, then capture a spaceport from the Bad Guys, somehow commandeer a starship, and then go home to Mother for explanations. Fortunately, Roger has an ace in the hole: Bravo Company of Bronze Battalion of The Empress' Own Regiment. If anyone can get him off Marduk alive, it's the Bronze Barbarians.

About the Author
John Ringo brings fighting to life. He is the creator of the Posleen Wars series, which has become a New York Timesbest-selling series with over one million copies in print. The series contains A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, Hell’s Faire and Eye of the Storm. In addition, Ringo has penned the Council War series: There Will be Dragons, Emerald Sea, Against the Tide, and East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Adding another dimension to his skills, Ringo created nationally best-selling techno-thriller novels about Mike Harmon (Ghost,Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach, A Deeper Blue, and, with Ryan Sear, Tiger by the Tail). His techno-thriller The Last Centurion was also a national bestseller. A more playful twist on the future is found in novels of the Looking-Glass series: Into the Looking Glass, Vorpal Blade,Manxome Foe and Claws That Catch, the last three in collaboration with Travis S. Taylor. His audience was further enhanced with four collaborations with fellow New York Times best-selling author David Weber: March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Starsand We Few. There are an additional five collaborative spinoffs from the Posleen series: The Hero, written with Michael Z. Williamson, Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes and The Tuloriad, all written with Tom Kratman, and the New York Times best seller Cally’s War and its sequels Sister Time and Honor of the Clan, both with Julie Cochrane. In addition, Ringo’s Princess of Wands and Queen of Wands broke new ground in contemporary fantasy adventure. And his science-based zombie apocalypse Black Tide Rising series includes Under a Graveyard Sky, and To Sail a Darkling Sea. A veteran of the 82nd Airborne, Ringo brings first-hand knowledge of military operations to his fiction.

About the authors
David Mark Weber is an American science fiction and fantasy author. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1952. Weber and his wife Sharon live in Greenville, South Carolina with their three children and "a passel of dogs".
With a blue-collar, science-fiction loving father, a college English teacher mother (who also owned her own ad agency in the 70s), and a life-long love for history, he was clearly predestined to perpetrate a whole host of military science-fiction (and fantasy) novels and anthologies.
Previously the owner of the small advertising and public relations agency he took over from his mother, has written science fiction full time for thirty years. He is probably best known for his Honor Harrington series, from Baen Books, and his Safehold series, from Tor.
I'm a professional author of... Well, I used to say "science fiction." Then came There Will Be Dragons, which is sf with a distinct fantasy twist. Then came Ghost which is techno-thriller crossed with porn. Then came Princess of Wands, a Christian soccer mom battling demons through the power of God. Who knows what's next? Children's books? (I've actually got that one mapped out. You see, there's this girl who is raised by dolphins... You think I'm joking, don't you?)

Planning to read all of the series.
Oh, no! Don't get me wrong! he said, as all eyes in the conference room swiveled to regard him with faint shocked expressions, as he windmilled his hands feelingly as if to forestall a torrent of abusive objections. I mean, I've read every single Honor Harrington book available since I first discovered "On Basilisk Station" in 1997 at a PX in Honolulu, and enjoyed them. "Basilisk" was one tight, relatively concise book.
But each one after that was at least twice as long as it needed to be, and delivered character development, dialogue, plot development, and overall pacing like a twenty pound frying pan to the nose.
I don't know if David Weber is (the only one on the planet) so delighted with his own wit such that the (often insipid and ham-handed) pleasantries at the *beginning* of a conversation can stretch to *seventeen pages of dialogue* or if he is simply tone-deaf to the concept of subtlety. I don't know. What I do know: he's lucky that, in his novels, the story is greater than the sum of its weaknesses. Somehow. Because the list of weaknesses is long.
And here is where Mr. Ringo comes in. Because Empire of Man, and its sequel, are *precisely* what I want in a David Weber novel (no offense to Mr. Ringo intended).
I imagine that Mr. Weber supplies the concepts, ideas, and inspiration for the story -- because seriously, does anyone else see a pattern? Instead of a Type-A, overachieving, implacable, tall, beautiful (without knowing it or even caring) female heroine like Honor Harrington or Alicia DeVries, here we get a tall, implacable, devastatingly attractive (almost pretty), long-haired, fairly feminized male hero who ends the story as the ultimate overachiever and fills nearly the same niche as the heroines, thank you very much -- but Mr. Ringo supplies the flow of dialogue, the masterful pacing, and the development of both character and story such that you believe it.
I didn't want to put it down the first time I read it. Like, for anything.
My fifth re-read years later is the same.
This is the highest compliment I can give to an author. Well done, gentlemen.
Mr. Ringo, please -- for God's sake please -- don't ever get more than twenty miles from Mr. Weber's word processor.
Thank you, sir.
The writing itself is incredible, there is almost non stop action (at some points I was even wishing it would slow down!) and all the main characters are rich and interesting. I more or less love every type of science fiction book that Ringo has written, and if you are a fan of his or military science fiction you will not be disapointed by picking up this book and the entire series it kept me enthralled from start to finish.

Will the hero step up and take charge, great development of the character of the prince.
Supporting characters are excellent
Another one best on Kindle though, not really for my precious hard back collection on limited shelf space. I'd call it good YA material for a fun read and on to better things soon after: Which is to say, Moon, McCaffrey, Ringo, Weber(his other stuff: Honourverse), Drake, Lee&Miller (Liaden), Lowell (Clipper), LE Modesitt, GS Paul (Helfort), Scalzi and Bujold (Vorkosigan).
