I love stories that mix real life history with supernatural elements.
So I was pretty excited about this book even before it came out. I wasn't super enthused about the setting; Berlin, after World War 2, I just didn't think it lent itself to bravery or derring do the way the war periods tend. But, boy was I wrong. This story starts out with a real bang.
I loved that the heroine is a female who is constantly having to prove herself in a world that isn't ready for smart and decisive women. Even her own father thinks she should never have pursued a career in something so dangerous and controversial as magic. But Karen has a real talent for magic and the drive to pursue it with or without society's approval.
The story starts out with one mystery; a hole in the Berlin Wall, but it turns out that is just a symptom of a much bigger and more dangerous problem.
Soviets; East German magicians and evil nazi magic all collide as Karen tries to figure out who or what is causing the wall to fail and how she can stop the decay.
The book ends without an ending. I don't mean to be mysterious about it, you just need to read it for yourself, but for me, it was more like the ending of one small mystery because a much bigger problem has emerged.
The author says book 2 will be out next year around November, but that seems like a really long wait.

A Magical Berlin War? A Fantastic Alternate History Book
Breach is a fantastic alternate history book that takes on the Cold War era, specifically the Berlin Wall. I was floored by the concept that the Berlin Wall was one created out of magic. It just put a whole new twist on history and actually made me want to research and learn more about our actual history during the Cold War.The book's main character is a head-strong, opinionated, caring, funny woman. I found her to be a fully-developed character that faced challenges based on her being a woman - which is certainly an identifiable trait for most woman today. And it was refreshing to see her stand up against some of those pig-headed chauvinistic men. Sadly, she is the only woman in the book. The rest of the cast of characters is rounded out by men -varied men, but still men.I enjoyed the book immensely and the concept of why the wall was created and what it hides. And I look forward to reading more in this world and seeing the repercussions of the wall falling and magic seemingly becoming more important to western countries.
