Monster Hunter Memoirs: Sinners (2) Mass Market Paperback – January 30, 2018
NIGHTMARE IN THE BIG EASY
With New Orleans out of control, Chad Oliver Gardenier, one of Monster Hunter International’s premier hunters, has been dispatched from Seattle to reinforce the beleaguered members of MHI'S Hoodoo Squad in their fight against the darkness.
Chad had once taken a werewolf while wearing only jogging gear. With half a dozen or more loup garou appearing every full moon, mysterious shadow demons, houdoun necromancers, fifty-foot bipedal crocodiles showing up every couple of months and more vampires than a Goth concert, New Orleans in the '80s gives a whole new perspective to the term “Hell on Earth.” In fact, more monsters are popping up than crawfish at a fais do do! Chad may be able to collect enormous bounties for the monsters he kills. But there’s one catch: he has to stay alive to do it!

This book has a different voice, as it is the result of two talented writers (I am now a John Ringo fan!). It takes the character Larry created and puts him in a non-stop all -out fight to the death with craziness of the Big Easy. Everyone and I mean everyone in New Orleans is in on HooDoo, and they respect the squad that stops the killing. Even the feds are slightly less bleepers in this book, and will actually once in a great while try to stop the monsters from killing people, instead of just intimidating and murdering witnesses.
My only wish is that Chad had more depth. He's convinced he's going to die ( a reasonable assumption in his business ), and that as long as he does his best and gets absolution for all the whoring around, (he's a total horn dog - his bleep probably glows in the dark) he believes he'll do God's work and go on to greener pastures. I like Chad (glowing bleep and all). In the last book he had more of a spiritual side and would sing songs I hear in church, an aspect that was missing from John's interpretation of Chad. Also, the action was so fast and non-stop and slap out crazy, it was hard to put down the book. I also enjoyed reading about the monster hunter characters in their earlier lives, before Z enters the pages. I LOVED his valet/butler! What a great character! I hope he's around in the later books and we can see what he's up to.
I will buy anything these guys write. If you want to enjoy a book that's non-stop action, with humor and zing, then read Sinners and Grunge and all of the Monster Hunter International books.
Having now read all of the Monster Hunter books, I look at the original Correia novels completely differently than the Memoirs collaborations. If you're looking for maximum character and plot development, then clearly the Correia originals put the new series to shame. They are long, complex, absorbing stories that flow and build upon one another across the several books.
That said, I found both of the Memoirs books--first Grunge and now Sinners--very enjoyable. Do they have the substance of the "classic" books? No. But what John Ringo has brought to the collaboration is a sense of fast-action fun. The main criticism of the new books seems to be that they are strings of anecdotal action sequences strung together, and feature a main character--Chad, aka "Iron Hand,"--that has some occasionally annoying personality traits and isn't as well-developed as the personalities in the main MHI books. But even if we accept those reasonable criticisms, Sinners remains entertaining. The plot device linking this to the universe is that it is a transcription of a previous generation Monster Hunter's archived diaries. It works for me. The seeming one-monster-incident per chapter flow makes it easier to read at one's own pace. And the vignettes ARE fun to read. Ringo's storytelling voice fits the image of the cocky, horomonal, etc. Chad perfectly. We see Larry Correia's touch linking the story to the MHI canon and tempering some of the potential excesses.
Bottom line: The main MHI books are finely crafted, multi-course meals. Sinners and its predecessor, Grunge, are better than fast food: maybe more like lunch at a casual chain restaurant. There's a time and place to enjoy both. If that's what you're in the mood for, and enjoy a no-frills Monster Hunter experience, you'll like this book. I'm hoping that Correia and Ringo's continued collaboration means that we'll be able to get Monster Hunter stories more often.
Seriously, this book is amazing as usual with Ringo and Correia, and it picks up very quickly from the 1st in this series. Couple of months in the timeline later. Chad has had to move south. Something about an elf princess and angry cousins of hers. etc etc.
So... The Big Easy ain't all that easy when you're just about overrun by zombies, wights, fell creatures and maybe a few worse things. No Old Ones though. Probably. The words "Target Rich Environment" don't do it justice. More like, we can advance in any direction and attack the undead. I was tired after reading the book because the characters just never can catch a break. Things are so bad at times that the Monster Control Bureau is actually HELPFUL. Cognitive Dissonance begins now.
Caveat emptor: Don't read this one first! Go get Monster Hunter Grunge first. If you've not read any of the Monster Hunter international series, then Don't read these first at all. You'd be best served to read "Monster Hunter International" first of all, and that series first. Note the title "Memoirs" part of the title.
Another reason I did this review is that some idiot did a 1 star review on a brand new book because "Its not available on kindle" since that means sooo much to how good the book is. I freely admit to being a fanboi for both John Ringo and Larry Correia and I've read everything that either has published and I'll continue to do so. I've never been disappointed by any of either authors books and doubt I will be. Leaving a 1 star like that really angered me.
Get off my lawn you twit.

I committed a sin by getting myself tripped by all the starred reviews. And now I am paying the price.
