Wizard of Oz Book Summary: Lesson for Kids
Table of Contents
ShowHave you ever traveled far from home? In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is a girl living on a Kansas farm with her aunt, uncle, and loving dog, Toto. One day, a tornado-like storm whisks the farmhouse far, far away with Dorothy and Toto inside. They land in Oz and discover that the house crushed a woman--the Wicked Witch of the East.
The Munchkins, unique folk who seem much older than Dorothy but are about her height, are happy that their evil ruler is dead. The Good Witch of the North gives Dorothy magical silver shoes that were worn by the Wicked Witch. Dorothy learns that she must venture to the great Wizard of Oz in Emerald City in order to get back home.

Imagine a world full of color and objects coming to life through magic and you'll have a good idea about Dorothy's adventure. Along her journey, Dorothy first meets Scarecrow, a straw-stuffed with a painted face, then a man made of tin named the Tin Woodman, and finally a scared lion known as the Cowardly Lion.
The Scarecrow thinks he would like a brain, the Tin Man desires a heart, and the Cowardly Lion wishes he had courage. They travel with Dorothy to meet the Wizard, who they believe can grant them those things.
Dorothy and her friends will not get their wishes so easily. The Wizard tells them they must kill the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked Witch uses a powerful Golden Cap to send winged monkeys after them. The flying monkeys capture Dorothy and take her to the Wicked Witch.
The Wicked Witch takes one of Dorothy's silver shoes from her. Dorothy is not happy about that! She throws a bucket of water, and the water ends up melting the Wicked Witch. Dorothy uses the Golden Cap to get the winged monkeys to carry her and her friends to Emerald City.
Dorothy and her pals meet the Wizard again. But this time, Toto tips a screen that the Wizard is hiding behind, and they see that he is not a wizard at all. He is actually a regular person who came to Oz just like Dorothy!
To meet their requests as best he can, the 'Wizard' gives the Scarecrow a brain made of bran, gifts the Tin Man a heart made of silk and sawdust, and awards a potion called 'courage' to the Cowardly Lion.
The fake Wizard says he can take Dorothy home in his hot air balloon. While the Wizard waits in the balloon, Dorothy runs to catch Toto, who is chasing a kitten. The rope holding down the hot air balloon snaps, and the balloon goes into the sky with only the Wizard inside!
Dorothy learns that Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, may be able to help, so she heads to the Witch's home. Dorothy gets the winged monkeys' help one more time to cross the mountains on the way to Glinda.
Glinda tells Dorothy that the silver shoes can take her home. Dorothy clicks her heels three times, and she and Toto are whisked through the air and end up back in Kansas.
