A handy book review template for kids

This simple and engaging book review template is a great way to encourage your class to share opinions on their favourite books, whether they are read in class or at home. By giving them focused discussion opportunities, not only will you develop their communication and analytical skills, but there are opportunities for students to develop confidence when forming their own opinions.

These book review templates are a great persuasive writing exercise for your English class and are a fun way for your children to summarise the book they have read.

The template provides space to include:

  • The book title
  • The author
  • The genre (fiction or non-fiction)
  • Premise
  • Star rating (out of 5)
  • An illustration inspired by the book

Adaptable to a variety of learning needs, it is good for reviewing class texts or books that children enjoy at home. We have you covered when it comes to providing inclusive and accessible learning experiences.

Why not create a performance space for your students to express their ideas, thoughts and opinions on their chosen book. A great way to brush up on speaking and listening skills, and enhancing engagement.

What qualities should a good book review have?

A good book review should be objective, well-researched, informative, honest and entertaining to read.

  • Balanced - even if you don't like a book, it should be considered that everyone's taste is different and therefore a book should be judged on its positive and negative aspects.
  • About the book, not the author - a book should be judged on its own merits, and not your opinion of the author.
  • About the book, not the cover - focus on the writing, not the packaging.
  • Focused on your opinion - people want help deciding if a book is worth their time. Don't just summarise the plot.
  • Spoiler-free - don't give away anything that could take away from the reader's enjoyment and experience.
  • Specific
