#99027: Christian Cursades Coins - 11th to 14th Centuries AD,
Cilician Armenia  --  Bastion of Christendom in the East

Historical Context:  These coins were minted in Cilician Armenia, a state formed in the Middle Ages by Armenian refugees fleeing the Seljuk invasion of Armenia about 1045 AD. It was aligned with the European during the Crusades and saw itself as a bastion of Christendom in the East.  It was located on the Gulf of Alexandretta of the Mediterranean Sea in what is today southern Turkey , strategically located near the Hoyland. The kingdom remained independent from around 1078 to 1375.  Snake Castle (located about 30 miles east of Adana, Turkey) is such a Crusader-era castle on the Cilician plain - See photos to right.  These coins (these exact coins) almost certainly passed through this castle while in its prime period..

Cilicia was reconquered from the Arabs by the Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas around 965. He expelled the Muslims living there, and Christians from Syria and Armenia were encouraged to settle in the region. Emperor Basil II (976-1025) attempted to expand into Armenian Vaspurakan in the East and Arab-held Syria towards the south. As a result of the Byzantine military campaigns, the Armenians spread into Cappadocia and eastward from Cilicia into the mountainous areas of northern Syria and Mesopotamia.

The Armenian immigration increased with the formal annexation of Greater Armenia to the Byzantine Empire in 1045 and the Seljuk conquest 19 years thereafter, giving two new waves of migration. After the fall of Bagratid and during the following centuries, the Armenian state was unable to re-establish itself and its sovereignty. It remained under the rule of Turkic tribes.

#99006: ROMAN SILVER - Severan Dynasty,
193 AD to 235 AD,
One of the Weirdest Dynasty of the Roman Empire
GREAT DEAL !!

Historical Context:  These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the SEVERAN DYNASTY (193 - 235 AD).  It was founded by Septimus Severus, who was a outstanding soldier. At the death of Commodus, he expressed his allegiance to Pertinax, but after his murder and the shameful elevation of Didius Julianus, Severus was saluted as emperor by the troops.  He led his troops to victory and became Emperor.  He founded a dynasty in Rome that lasted a number of generations. Some of the oddest people ever to rule Rome were part of this dynasty. This emperor brought onto the empire one of its most turbulent periods.  Some of the oddballs include, Elagabalus.  He was known to "cross-dress" and at one point had asked the Senate to declare him high priestess of Rome. He also married a Vestal virgin.  He claimed that he and the virgin would have devine children. As part of his sun worshiping garb, he wore a horn.  Another is Caracalla.  Caracalla reigned jointly with his brother Geta. However, he had Geta assassinated, reportedly while in the arms of his mother.

Jesus observed her generosity and told his disciples "I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast more in than all they (the rich men) have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance but she of her want did cast in all that she had." Middle of The Crusades period
Spain, Alfonso I; 11th - 12th Centuries AD

Alfonso the Battler

Historical Context:  These coins were minted in Spain about 11th to 12th centuires AD.

Alfonso I (1073/1074[1] – 7 September 1134), called the Battler or the Warrior (Spanish: el Batallador), was the king of Aragon and Navarre from 1104 until his death in 1134. He was the second son of King Sancho Ramrez and successor of his brother Peter I. With his marriage to Urraca, queen regnant of Castile, Len and Galicia, in 1109, he began to use, with some justification, the grandiose title Emperor of Spain, formerly employed by his father-in-law, Alfonso VI. Alfonso the Battler earned his sobriquet in the Reconquista. He won his greatest military successes in the middle Ebro, where he conquered Zaragoza in 1118 and took Ejea, Tudela, Calatayud,Borja, Tarazona, Daroca, and Monreal del Campo. He died in September 1134 after an unsuccessful battle with the Muslims at the Battle of Fraga.

Alfonso's late marriage and his failure to remarry and produce the essential legitimate heir that should have been a dynastic linchpin of his aggressive territorial policies have been adduced as a lack of interest in women. Ibn al-Athir (1166–1234) describes Alfonso as a tireless soldier who would sleep in his armor without benefit of cover, who responded when asked why he did not take his pleasure from one of the captives of Muslim chiefs, responded that the man devoted to war needs the companionship of men not women.[3]

#5578: ROMAN REPUBLIC Denarius - 64 BC, Juno Sospita / Maiden feeding SNAKES !!

Historical Context:  These coins were minted by the ROMAN REPUBLIC (before the EMPIRE) during the 2nd-1st Century BC. This period is as active as the "Imperial Period" with regards to Rome's growth in size, power, and prestige.  During the late period of the Roman Republic the issuance of coinage was administered by annually elected magistrates (“Moneyers”). The moneyers were swept up into the revolutionary tide created by the warlords as the Republic grew in strength. The moneyers were powerful in that coinage was a communications medium.  Internal conflicts raged between Roman generals and they used moneyers to help promote their causes, their family names, their great victories. This is the era of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, Brutus, and Pompey. Following an intense civil war, Julius Caesar prevailed over the forces of Pompey and became dictator. Of course Brutus later murdered Caesar and began a war with Marc Anthony, Pompey, and Octavian. Octavian prevailed and the Roman Empire was founded.

#10166: INDIA 13th Century AD
Large SILVER Coin

DELHI SULTANS

Historical Context:  The Delhi Sultanate is a term used to cover five short-lived dynasties, Delhi based kingdoms or sultanates, mostly of Turkic and Pashtun (Afghan) origin in medieval India. The sultanates ruled from Delhi between 1206 and 1526, when the last was replaced by the Mughal dynasty. The five dynasties were the Mamluk dynasty (1206–90); the Khilji dynasty (1290–1320); the Tughlaq dynasty (1320–1414); the Sayyid dynasty (1414–51); and the Afghan Lodi dynasty (1451–1526).

Qutb-ud-din Aibak, a former slave (Mamluk) of Muhammad of Ghor, was the first sultan of Delhi and his dynasty managed to conquer large areas of northern India. Afterwards the Khalji dynasty was also able to conquer most of central India, but both failed to unite the Indian subcontinent. The sultanate are also noted for being one of the few states to repeatedly defeat the Mongol Empire.

#10962: SILVER Denarius
Septimus Severus, 193 to 211 AD

Historical Context:  These coins were minted by the Roman Empire during the reign of Septimus Severus (193 - 211 AD). Sept Severus was a outstanding soldier. It is said that he instructed his artists to show him with lengthy beard even thought he had a short cropped beard. He thought it made him look past emperors.

Caracalla, 198 to 217 AD

Historical Context: These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of CARACALLA (198-217 AD). M. Aurelius, originally named Bassianus, the elder son of Severus. In 198 was created Augustus, although only ten years of age. On the death of Severus, Caracalla reigned jointly with his brother Geta. However, he had Geta assassinated, reportedly while in the arms of his mother. His reign was marked by extravagance and cruelty. He achieved more by treachery than by force of arms. He had his portrait (as an adult) potrayed with a skowl so that the Roman people would fear him.  The one notable action attributed to him, was giving to all free inhabitants of the Empire the privileges of Roman citizens. He was part of the SEVERAN DYNASTY, which lasted a number of generations and included some of the oddest people ever to rule Rome.

#6473: EGYPTIAN TOMB Ushabti - 1000 to 400 BC,
Ancient MAGIC SPELL !!

Historical Context:  This item is an Egyptian USHABTI. These are some of the most interesting and collectable artifacts from ancient Egypt. Ushabties are magical statues found in tombs. Egyptians believed these Ushabties would come to life and serve the dead in their after life and do any unpleasant chore the deceased might be called upon to perform in the afterlife. Because the daily life of ancient Egyptians centered on agriculture, these Ushabties took on the appearance of field workers. They were mummiform, so as to be identified with Osiris, the god of the dead, but their hands were protruding from the bandages so they could do the work.
