“As a kid, I dressed up as a gypsy fortune teller
on Halloween for five years in a row.
My mother had to add extensions to the bottom of my flouncy handmade boho skirt, as I kept outgrowing it. I can’t tell you why I was so addicted to the persona – it was partly the bold colors and exotic flair …and partly the magical mystery. So you can imagine that it was pretty exciting to learn from my grandpa that his parents were gypsies! Well, maybe not entirely. It was the family joke – being gypsies, the truth was that they immigrated from an area of Czechoslovakia known as Bohemia. People from this region have been thought of as unconventional artistic-types since the middle ages.”
